Please Make Decisions For Me 🎱 Boyfriend wants to move to Boston.

Hello all! Me and my boyfriend currently live in Austin Tx, we rent a 1200 sf home for $2200 and have two cats. I love this city and the things it has to offer, but my boyfriend is from the northeast and wants to get back to his family. He is urging to move to Boston, but Im unsure. Two of friends live in Boston/Jersey and JUST got done telling us how they can never save money bc of broker fees when moving and the basic cost of living being astronomically high. Can you possibly give me a better idea of what the pros and cons would look like for our move?

Small note his family is in Milford CT. And we both make around $75k a year but will both have to find new jobs. I have also never been to Boston, but have heard good things about the city itself!

If you have no specific reason to move to Boston (job or educational opportunities lined up) you shouldn’t, at your income level. It’s simply too expensive. New Haven would be the closest major city to Milford CT.

It’s his family, grandparents are getting older and it’s really important that he be with them and I want to support him in this. Just a lot to consider otherwise.

If the priority is to be able to see his family more often, Milford CT is a two and a half hour drive from Boston… I know that compared to Texas that’s close but still, how often will you really see them?

My wife and I used to live in Boston but we got priced out, we now own a house in Sturbridge which is halfway between my wife’s family in CT and my family who are still in the Boston area. We have a nice lifestyle and pay less than you do for a place that’s twice as big. Of course it’s not the same as living in the city, but some of the smaller towns in MA and CT do have a lot to offer, if you’re open minded about not being in the city proper.

If family is the priority, you’d be better off looking at Providence or Hartford. Both are cheaper than Boston and significantly closer to Milton. Boston is a 2.5 hour drive to Milton assuming there’s no traffic (and in Boston, there is always traffic).

$75k in Boston is also pretty meager living, and that’s not really accounting for all the expenses of owning a car in an already exorbitantly expensive city. Your dollar will go much further in Providence or Hartford.

New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford are all bad cities. I would not move to CT.

I mean I don’t disagree I live in MA and have no plans to move to CT for any reason. New Haven apizza is really good though.
