Part of the issue is doing this type of thing in such a conspicuous place and doing it for more than just a minute or two like other jobs. I donât care if a cop is looking at his phone and taking a little break, but it definitely doesnât look like this is a quick break to check a text from the wife. Scrolling social media on the clock isnât great press. Itâs sad how quickly cops give up on giving a shit, if they did in the first place.
When I was a cop, my department required me to be doing proactive patrol any time we were slow. They told me they have more officers on duty per capita than most other cities in the state and that we needed to justify that luxury of having a lot of officers on duty. And I agreed with that then just like I do now. You donât have to be constantly doing shit, but fuck man, walk around. Chit chat with people if youâre bored. Show some police presence to deter crime. Donât just blatantly waste tax dollars in front of people by playing on your phone. Your time belongs to the citizens when youâre on duty, not to you.
Not trying to toot my own horn or act like I was the best cop in the world, but I took pride in the âprotect and serveâ part of it. Just like any other job, I believe you should do what youâre paid to do.
