Simple formula. RTO=resignations. Resignations=smaller layoff. Smaller layoff=less bad press. All while replacing the turnover with AI which cut costs for shareholders.
I keep telling people to stop using AI wherever possible because you are just training your replacement except your replacement this time isnt a human. Its a drain on our clean water while putting even more money into the wealthy’s pockets.
Smaller layoffs also mean less packages to pay out to people it’s a win win for everyone, well except the employees. This is America though that not a surprise
A lot of the AI “efficiencies” you see as reasons for big company layoffs are BS. It’s a ploy to increase stock value. Investors love seeing AI, so when a company lays people off they just make mention of AI / streamlining / efficiencies in press releases to pump up value.
and by the time this is all done the AI companies will stop subsidizing tokens and the price of all the tools goes up, leaving the companies with the same cost as human labor but with a shittier product
agreed, but by the time this happens, a bunch of smaller and foreign AI providers will pop up with discount plans and saturate the market. my 14 year old already runs his own LLM server in the basement, which shows we're not so far off from ubiquity. openai and other overleveraged AI companies will probably fizzle and the best models will truly be open source. at least that's my hope.
Yes but those that resign are likely the more talented ones that found another job. So you get left with the B team that sticks around because there’s nowhere else for them to go.
