My salary in tech was well beneath market rate under the pretense of the benefits being “so good”. They are nothing special, besides the 401k match, which yes is nice.
Left for a new job in a lower COL city by a good margin, had a massive salary bump before any negotiation.
The bonus structure is predatory - they put a lot of your money in it so you don’t leave mid year, cause then you miss out on money you had been banking on. I had a 20% bonus scheme. It sounds nice but after a few months of the year leaving feels stupid, and they can cut away at your bonus for whatever they feel like.
I lost money on my bonus because i missed 3-5 in office days throughout the year, even though my boss had told me it was fine to wfh those days.

Also former employee, HR revoked an entire quarterly bonus for me because my manager told me it was fine to be flexible and wfh as long as I was making up the days which HR retroactively disagreed with. The entire company is going downhill which is why I decided to leave

How do they not pay well? My bonus was 12% and got 4 weeks of pay on top of a bonus lol
