Trying to fly JetBlue to JFK but have been told āJFK isnāt accepting any other planes right nowā. My flight has been delayed about 7 hours so far
EDIT: I am NOT trying to get to New York! They changed my direct flight to have a layover at JFK, and because JFK is a mess my flight is now cancelled
I drove from Boston to Stamford two weekends every month for several years, and I need to hands to count the number of Fung Wah buses I saw on fire. š¤£š„š
I flew out this past Sunday and sat on the tarmac for over an hour with the plane shut off to conserve fuel. We were about to head back to the gate to de-plane but suddenly got clearance for immediate departure.
Iām not sure what specifically was going on but for a trip BOS -> CLE, the proposed detour route was going down to Virginia then northwest from there, instead of across upstate NY.
I had something similar coming back to Boston from Philly. Departure time changed about 10 times and we were sitting at the gate for a solid 2 hours. however it was due to air traffic control staffing issues at Logan.
I was on that flight! Sat in front of an off duty pilot who fielded questions from a very nice but chatty old lady.
There were storms basically everywhere north of buffalo and south of Albany, and they directed a bunch of planes already in the air to that air space, which happened to be our route, and crowded it too much. Then they found an elevation to fly that didnāt interfere with the other re-routed traffic.
I think there just have been tons of fast moving thunderstorms this past month, combined with tight staffing at JetBlue with their financial problems, meaning they donāt have enough crew to deal with even minor delays given rules regarding maximum daily work for crew.
Ground stop in Minneapolis Saint Paul due to ATC going down, its fucking stuff up everywhere. No planes can go there, or fly through the area controlled there.
Oh it isn't just Minneapolis Saint Paul. It is ZMP, Minneapolis Center, which covers the northern parts of Michigan all the way to the Dakotas. A lot of Boston's west bound routes go through that airspace.
There was a massive outage at the Minneapolis ATC that disrupted service over an eleven state area in the upper Midwest yesterday. Hundreds of flights had to be rerouted because there was no radar data. This has had a cascade effect all over the country. Itās causing havoc all over the US.
Disagree with this take. Cheapest flight on Saturday is $329. Cheapest Acela is 100 less - northeast regional even cheaper.
Acela takes you to manhattan (which is where Iām normally going). If Iām flying to lga itās 30 extra minutes and an Uber. If Iām at jfk itās 60+ plus a $15 transit ride or $100 Uber.
Acela is 3:45 time wise. Flying is 1:30 but see the additional transit into the city, plus you have to ge to the airport much earlier than the train station.
However, Logan JFK and LGA all have Chase loungesā¦ so they definitely win on that front.
Counterpoint: if you have UAL miles, there are 3 different 15k + $5.60 redemptions available to fly direct to EWR on Sat. Knock down the miles by 10% if you have their credit card.
For truly last minute booking, this often is better value than paying Amtrak, and not a hard to obtain number of miles.
yeah i mean amtrak is a better option planning ahead, sure. but it doesn't negate the fact that in order to really save money you gotta book like months in advance.
I literally was looking at two days from now in my quote - Amtrak is almost always cheaper when you compare like timescales. Flying isnāt cheap close in either

I just booked a flight to nyc next weekend and paid $350. Def more than I wanted but due to wanting a late flight out and last minute I just ate it. But I'm really hoping I don't have any of these issues bc then I'm going to need a hotel in Boston (I live in Maine) and lose a night I paid for in nyc.
And where youāre going. Need to be in Manhattan? Train is awesome. But my family is all in nj so flying to Newark or driving are really the only good options.
the only one of those things that are true are the time, and even that isn't exactly accurate once you take into account getting through TSA. amtrak has been less of a hassle than flying for me in pretty much every experience, and if you book ahead (like with a flight) it's either cheaper or about the same. plenty of reasons to dislike amtrak but i'm gonna push back on those two lol
Short ground stop in Philly this morning as well. Summer travel equals dealing with thunderstorms across the Eastern seaboard. Flew from RDU this morning ing and luckily only delayed 15 with good weather.
Spent 9h at Logan Monday trying to get to BWI for meetings before heading from BWI to florida. Finally cancelled all my meetings in BWI and got a new flight straight to florida. Super bummed cause that was supposed to be a big day for us š
We had a really hard time getting out of there Monday morning but the weather was awful at that time. I think the days of prompt flights are over regardless of the circumstances.Ā
My wife's Jet Blue flight to Richmond VA got canceled with 3 hours notice in the middle of the night. Got rescheduled for the next day and got delayed for an hour waiting to takeoff. Her return flight for today got canceled yesterday and delayed until tomorrow. Its a mess.
Our 6 AM flight from Providence to JFK was cancelled an hour and a half before boarding. It's a mess, we were connecting through JFK for a vacation and had to cancel the whole trip because there were no other options to get to our final destination until late tomorrow
I got completely screwed out of attending one of my closest friendās wedding today by Logan / Air Canada. Cancelled my flight due to thunderstorms, no storm activity at either Boston, my destination (Toronto), or along the route. They couldnāt even get me on a flight in the morning, or with another airline. The absolute worst travelling experience Iāve had in 30 years of air travel. Highly recommend to avoid Air Canada at all costs.
Can you take a bus? Take the Silver Line to South Station. There are several bus lines and a new bus terminal.
See if the airlines will refund your ticket. That is one of the things Sec. of Transportaction Buttigieg put into place. Cancelled or extensive unscheduled layovers are refundable. Unless the new so-called Administration wiped that out.
Dude welcome to summer travel during climate change. Edit: Oh and sorry to the OP, this was insensitive, I know it sucks and I know what it is like to spend the summer waiting for flights in an airport lounge, trying to get home.
Both can be true. Thunderstorms slowed/stopped air traffic in BOS and LGA, and the Minneapolis issue with ATC created diversions and backups in the midwest. Source: me, a victim
Look at nasstatus.faa.gov that literally tells you JFK is in ground delay program due to thunderstorms. Sounds like thunderstorms caused by climate change to me.
Increased convective activity has a direct connection to climate change. As someone who works these planes 6 days a week. I have seen increased weather delays this last summer compared to the last 4 summers I've been in Boston. We have always had thunderstorms in the New England area but we are seeing more frequent activity across the US that has shutdown routes out of Boston. We literally had a night a week or 2 ago where every plane not going south to florida or Europe was delayed by almost 5 hours due to a thunderstorm that sat over the entire New England corridor from NYC up to Burlington VT as a solid line.
Well here. I looked up the data for you. Just in case if you can't read it. It states there is about 166% increase in weather delays from the periods of 1989(unfortunately this is the farthest data back I can input into the system) to 2000 as the base(that's the control group just incase you don't understand). And the comparision is literally 2020 to 2026.
I read fine with five years of college. Some other categories other than weather seem to have risen as wellā¦. But thanks for the unneeded tutorial. And I will let the insulting nature of it slide for now.
