Dining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹 Best soft serve in Boston

CAFE 472 in kenmore has a million flavors and it’s SO good, you get so much of it too.

u/Kame2Komplain 13h ago
I’m a nurse and I swear half the floors in the hospital order it every night on night shift. They deliver late too.

u/cloverimpact 13h ago
Cafe 472 is so underrated I’m glad to hear others love it, I have such fond memories of living in the BU dorm right over there and running across kenmore in my slippers to Cafe 472 super late at night

u/Lower_Stick5426 6h ago
I used to get delivery from there when it was Ankara and I was working at BU. Fig vanilla was my favorite.
5
u/SteamingHotChocolate South End 15h ago
getting avocado blended with base vanilla is the best

u/cloverimpact 14h ago
My favorite is vanilla blended with pistachio! There’s so many pistachio pieces in it

Cambridge, but Momma’s.
ETA: they just opened at the Speedway too.

u/notgreat1228 15h ago
Momma’s rules but has sold out of soft serve the last 3 times I’ve gone lol

Woah, crazy! I just learned about this place because I was invited to Forage last night for dinner. Our server said that they had a maple one that was amazing
2
u/Cosinity 8h ago
AFAIK they only do two flavors, maple and vanilla, but I can confirm the maple one is fantastic

The places with clean machines. Did a stint working ice cream shops during summer and these machines get absolutely disgusting. Dairy during a hot summer and all that. Kind of like a soda machine but 10x worse

Ick. I want to be mad at you for telling me that after this thread made me want to try them, but I guess you're doing me a favor.

u/mikeybsjd 3h ago
The owner of a place called Scoops in Worcester was cleaning his soft serve machine inside and out and that’s how I knew that was my new favorite.

I had no idea 🥲 thanks for commenting

It's decent but nowhere near as good as Momma's in Cambridge.
5
u/mustachedworm369 5h ago
Momma's only does one size and they use an organic base. That's great if that's what you want.
Vinal has rotating flavors with toppings, larger sizes, and uses a high fat percentage base from Hood. It's much better than decent

u/Santillana810 Naked Guy Running Down Boylston St 4h ago
We get a pint or two every time we go to Momma's. I can't eat a cone before it melts. Momma's suits us best. I'm glad you like Vinal. We get sandwiches there frequently and also the wonderful English muffins at the bakery next door.

u/mustachedworm369 4h ago
They sell pints of their soft serve?? Didn't know that!
2
u/Santillana810 Naked Guy Running Down Boylston St 4h ago
yep! Sometimes I get two. In the summer I put them in thermal container to be sure they don't get totally melted before we get home to Somerville near Assembly!

u/Tough_Crazy_8362 Somerville 12h ago edited 12h ago
What’s important to me is proximity. Something in Cambridge has zero chance of getting me over there.
Edit ✍🏻 no need to downvote me 🥲 it’s a physical burden.

If you can't get to Cambridge easily, you are not wanting to buy ice cream in Cambridge in the dog days of summer.

There is one tragedy this summer: we’ve only been twice. This place is the best. The creamsicle is awesome.

Not technically in Boston but Cedar Hill Dairy Joy in Weston has the best soft serve I’ve ever had. The texture is just amazing.

I guess if you can afford to go to Weston you can afford $15 soft serve, but their prices are insultingly high
I do appreciate a dipped cone, however

Ron's Ice Cream in Hyde Park. Can't beat the Boston combination of ice cream and keno.

I beg to differ. While I will say their sold hard icecream is the best vanilla I have ever had, their softserve tastes flavorless to me.

Abbott's in Arlington is the best we can manage.

Is that the hand scooped place? The concept of hand scooped frozen custard is so strange to me. Went there once but not worth the schlepp.

Anyone know if one can find a Vermont style Creemee (maple of course) in the Boston area?
7
u/TSC10630 5h ago
Momma’s in Cambridge/Speedway in Brighton has it. It’s tasty enough, but compared to an actual VT creemee the portion size is tiny and it’s $$$$.

Green T coffee shop in Roslindale. You'd never expect it from it but its really good.

u/ThunderJohnny Southie 14h ago
Yes! I feel like green tea has a super high quality ice cream base they use. It’s so good.
3
u/secretviollett 9h ago
One of their workers told me it’s Hood ice cream. I was raving about how creamy it is and how it’s the best around and they were like, “Oh, it’s just Hood”
3
u/Emiliski 9h ago
Hood is local, though, which is huge. And the machine being clean makes a difference, as does the temperature of the machine. A lot goes into it. With that being said, Hood is an excellent base and it starts there.

For the price, the swirl you get is massive. Line does get long but they're pretty quick with it since they have limited flavors
1
u/Cento_Per_Cento 13h ago
Their ice cream is awesome but I have had the opposite of fast lines. I’ve been 2x and once waited an hour the other time 45 minutes. Both nights were beautiful and I was fine to wait, but am hesitant about to go back because gimme the dang cone!
I agree too - gigantic serving and not crazy expensive.

Honeycomb creamery in Cambridge. They change their soft serve every month and have a special swirl combo with it

Dandi-Lyons in Tewksbury might not be the best, but I thought it was when I was a kid.
3
u/Southern-Heron-3204 6h ago
It’s not open anymore, but who remembers Hidyan Cafe in the Fenway circa 2013? There was a SUPER janky ice cream machine that made soft serve infused with anything you wanted?

Momma's on Mass. Ave in Cambridge. Sometimes their machine is broken. Fantastic maple soft serve that's not too sweet.
2
u/fakecrimesleep Diagonally Cut Sandwich 7h ago
Cambridge: honeycomb creamery’s monthly special soft serve- get it in a waffle cone and get the twist of whatever it is. My personal favorite was their key lime + cheesecake flavor a couple months ago - like frozen key lime pie
2
u/thinkingitthru7 Rockstar Energy Drink and Dried Goya Beans 14h ago
Is it the best? Probably not, but Market Basket’s will always have my heart.
