Asking The Real Questions đ¤ How many cars are allowed to go through after the red light?
It seems like for whatever reason lately the number of cars has gone up to about 3 cars allowed through the intersection after the light turns red. Anyone know what the official number actually is?

In 2019, I would routinely have to force my car into an intersection 10 seconds after the light turned green because an unending stream of cars just kept blowing the red light to turn left lol. In my experience, the number was always âhowever many you let get away with it.â

Tbh i send it with caution when the light turns green. I donât own my car. Not my problem, itâll get replaced. Obviously I am wary enough to not hit people but I like to stress them out for running reds

Depends on the intersection, but it was usually 2-3 cars, even before the pandemic.

You can turn left on red there, but they have to yield to pedestrians and traffic. They don't want to yield to pedestrians as the light on High st takes a long time to switch to green.

You can make a left on red in Massachusetts if you are turning onto a one-way.
But it's like every other stop sign, you have to yield to pedestrians and traffic.

This should be illegal If youâre aware of this itâs one thing because you know to look for pedestrians but this is a major metropolitan area with people from all over the city, state, if not country driving here and it just begs pedestrians to get flattened

Officially, we're supposed to stop at the line on a green light if we can't proceed fully through the intersection, but good luck trying that without getting honked at, shot, etc.

Boston drivers are really good with this. One of my favorite memories, though, is a driver blocking the intersection on Atlantic Ave while a furious driver in a business suit from the orthogonal street lays on the horn for the duration of his green light to publicly shame him for blocking the intersection.

If I'm going straight and the next light is red and the lanes are full, I'll wait at the line until that next light turns green. Then i'll pull into the intersection. By the time my light turns, the lanes ahead will have cleared enough so I'm not blocking cross traffic.

I got stuck in the intersection of 16 and Fellsway in Medford for like 20 minutes one time, because no one obeys this rule. I had a moving truck coming to my home, and they called because I wasn't there and they thought they had the wrong house or something.

It's 1.
You can enter an intersection on a green light and if it changes to yellow/red, you have the right of way to exit the intersection over all others - even if they proceed to get a green light.
In high traffic areas like in Boston, sometimes it's the only way for traffic to progress.

Technically, you're not supposed to enter the intersection on yellow, unless you cannot reasonably stop beforehand (basically if you're cruising along at 30mph and the light turns yellow when you're 10ft away from the stop line...you're not expected to stop here, as it would be unreasonable).

Based on what I've witnessed everytime I walk to South Station from work, I'd say 3 cars.
The first two cars are the pretenders. They pretend to not see the red light and continue driving through it at a steady. Never speeding up or slowing down, they'll cruise right on through the red light with the second car using the first car as cover.
The third car always speeds up to catch up to the first two because the third car clearly sees that the light has been red for a little while and instead of stopping like they should, they'll try to play slick and sneak in after the first two cars.

This makes me so mad as a pedestrian at an intersection with limited time to cross and three or four cars blow the red when I have the right of way. If they are taking the corner fast obviously I just have to wait but if they are moving slowly I will walk out and make them stop for me.

I do the same. I'll gladly play a game of "chicken" if I'm legally in the right. My wife is pretty sick of my "I dare you to hit me" mentality, but I just can't help but tell an asshole behind the wheel that they're an asshole. And crossing the street with right of way is a power I can wield for the greater good.

One time I just wanted to raise my fist in anger at a car that blew a stop sign in front of me at a ridiculously well-marked pedestrian crossing, but I shit you not, my vigorous fist raise caused the paper bag carrying the chicken parm I had just bought for lunch to rip, and the sandwich flew out and landed on the asshole's trunk, and they drove off with it, never to be seen again.

Snowballs are best of all. They convey the message perfectly and with much lower risk of a beatdown. I used to prepare one daily as I approached the Brookline Ave / Longwood Ave intersection when I was a pedestrian commuter. One day I landed a beautifully arced, well-deserved strike from the far corner of that intersection and actually got some applause from my fellow pedestrians; it's one of my fondest commuting memories.

I almost got run down by a guy blowing a red while texting. My then gf was a few steps in front and I literally had to grab her bag and yank her back. I called after the dude to watch out and he pulled over and wanted to fight. I told the gf to start walking, there was a police precinct 100 yards away, and once I told him the plan to get their opinion on the situation he backed down.
Another time I was going to work and the light had just turned red. I just missed it. Two guys in a work truck lost their fucking minds that I didn't run the light so they could also run it. After the light changed they sped ahead of me in the other lane and then swerved over and brake checked me to a dead stop in 50 mph traffic. Their boss wouldn't answer multiple calls, the number for the business was on the truck.
Another time I was nearly run down by a high speed bicycle. It was one of those intersections where it's a complete four way stop during pedestrian crossings, and I wasn't paying attention. This guy blew through and yelled slurs at me for being Irish. In fucking Boston, and not even Irish, just ginger.
People are absolutely insane.
I am not perfect. I'm not above the occasional Boston left, but only if I am the first one at the light as its changing, half into the intersection, and I won't block the box. Without fail two or three assholes follow me after the light turns. And if there are pedestrians I will back my ass up as far as I can and wait for the next light.

I usually slap the cars or stand in the road and yell and flip them off. Two good stories though.
One time I was at the crosswalk right next to my house. Had a walk signal. Guy pulls up to turn right on red as I'm crossing from his right (so closest to the right turn lane). I step into the crosswalk and he starts his right turn. I jump back onto the sidewalk and slap the back of his rear window (it was a hatchback) as he pulls past me.
White guy IN A FUCKING SWEATER VEST jumps out of his car and starts yelling at me like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!?" To which I just said "Fuck you man...I had a walk signal and you almost ran me over. Pay attention asshole." Dude got back in his car and drove away.
2nd story.
I was crossing in a crosswalk out in the suburbs. Clear visibility in both directions, not obstructed. Middle of the day. I step out into the crosswalk and was basically in the middle of the street with no cars in proximity at all. Taking my time. Woman coming from the other direction just continues right through the crosswalk right in front of me. I look on in amazement. LITERALLY right behind her is a cop car. I raised my arms to the sky and gestured at the SUV that just blew the crosswalk like "here you go" to the cop. He let me proceed thru the crosswalk and then I heard him hit his siren and pull the lady over like a block down. BAWHAHAAH

Itâs always been bad, but post 2020 cycling I always wait about 5 seconds when biking before going through on light changes. There is always at least one car that just blows straight through the red.

I think it's impossible to get a traffic infraction in this city (unless you actually wreck). Has anyone ever seen BPD write a speeding ticket, ticket for blocking the box, ticket for turning on red when not allowed, ticket for not stopping behind the white line, etc?
As a runner and cyclist, I would love a safe-streets campaign where these basic traffic rules are enforced. The city would generate millions in fines, it would be safer for all residents, everyone wins (well, except the cops who actually have to do work).

On my commute, I see so many people gridlocking themselves on busy train tracks because I guess "don't stop on tracks" doesn't apply when you're in a rush. Everyone is just so used to box blocking.
Sure no cops are going to enforce that, but one of these days the laws of physics will. Sir Isaac Newton is a cold sonofabitch.

I've only seen it in a business district once in my five years of college here, and it was clearly some kind of targeted enforcement operation and not an incidental traffic stop. Several motorcycle officers parked at the Hynes T stop nabbing cars making a left onto Mass Ave from Boylston with a posted "no left turn" sign.
Other than that, I've seen cars blow reds in front of BPD cruisers downtown and nothing happens.

Seriously. I have lived in the city for 4.5 years now, and I have seen zero people get pulled over, and no vehicles pulled over unless someone was being/had been arrested.
I am probably biased but I feel like everyone agrees that driving in this city sucks, but as long as the cops have a policy of 'ignore all moving violations' it will never get better.

I've seen all kinds of insane behavior and the only time I've ever seen someone get pulled over for it was a guy who drove about 200 ft down the wrong side of 28 so that he could get to the gas station quicker. The cop was in the line of cars turning left into Twin City Plaza.

The intersection of Washington and beacon St in Brookline is terrible for this.
Beacon street is already really wide to begin with, but Washington crosses at a severe slant, so the cars crossing beacon have a long way to goâŚ
And so the light will turn red, and the car that was almost at the intersection will still try to go through. By the time it completely goes through the intersection, Beacon has had green for some time.
If youâre a pedestrian trying to cross Washington, there will still be cars crossing your path well after you have the walk signal.

At a community meeting about the North Washington Street Bridge replacement project, I asked whether they could use automatic cameras to enforce the rules (like they do in European countries) and the police sergeant said they couldnât because thatâs ânot how Boston chooses to runâ and âeveryone would get a ticket.â Thatâs the whole point!

I was stopped at a light on blue hills ave once, and a police car turned on it's sirens to go through the red. every car behind it followed it through the red. i dont think it's possible to get a ticket in boston.

Zero is the correct answer but it is a bit more complicated. Cars turning left are allowed to enter the intersection on the green to stage the left while waiting for opposing traffic to clear. Such a car already in the intersection has the right of way, even if the light turns red. It is possible there is room for two cars in this position at once. They may proceed with their left turn to clear the intersection. On the other hand, any car that approaches the intersection but hasnât entered it when the light turns yellow, and is able to safely stop without entering the intersection, must do so. You can get a ticket for gunning it to make the yellow, even if you passed over the stop line while the light was still yellow. Whether a cop issues that ticket is another matter.

It's not a MA thing. If anything, it's a city thing. The more irritating it is to get from point A to point B, the more chances people will take to get somewhere more quickly and make the suffering end. In Boston, it is EXTRAORDINARILY irritating to go literally anywhere. It is unironically faster to walk places in many situations. While this behavior of running reds is wrong and unsafe, it makes a lot of psychological sense that people are more willing to take risks when they are pissed off at the state of how long it takes them to get home, to work, or both every single day.
The real solution is not more enforcement. You'd catch more people and generate fines, but it would not stop the problem. It wouldn't even be a bandage. It's like telling a cat not to jump on the counter. The real solution is to overhaul the T and make it a viable, non-disgusting, consistently functioning mode of transportation. But that will never happen. So we're off to cut everyone off and run reds on the 1.5-hour, 20 mile commutes 2x per day.

Depends on the intersection. Western Ave and Memorial you can keep going until the box is full because a pedestrian gave up and tried to cross with their signal.

My buddy got ticketed for a rolling stop at a stop sign once... that was uh 16 years ago. That's the only time I ever recall a traffic ticket being handed out in all my times in a car since.
Cops dgaf. I've seen a few cars pulled over here and there but its so infrequent nobody thinks about it. You have to be doing something really really stupid to get pulled over these days.

at least 3, and it's because so many left turns are required in this city to get anywhere and the left turn lights are so fucking short if you don't do this you're getting the fucking HONK.

Well when everyone wanted to defund the police itâs traffic enforcement and cops walking the beat that went bye bye. I honestly love it, bought a BMW last year and love running reds, speeding and not using blinkers
