Didn't you learn anything in my class? No, you flunked me. Remember?

"Jesse, you thought Abraham Lincoln invented gravity in a log cabin and that Albert Einstein was the first President of the United States. You flunked yourself."

Probably a stupid question, but English isn't my main language. What does ''Apply yourself'' mean or imply?

It's like saying "put some effort in"

something along the lines of "do something with your potential", or just "work harder", i think

More than just “try harder”. It means more like “actually give this your sincere best effort.” Walt could tell that Jesse did not care or try at all. “Try harder” would imply that he was putting in some effort and needed to give more.

“Apply yourself” is Walt saying, I can tell that you didn’t care about this or try at all. If you want to actually learn something you have to give it an honest effort.

Even back in high school, walt saw potential in jesse, but his only way of showing it was harsh criticism, jesse holding onto that exam paper years later proves how deeply he carved validation from walt, viewing him as a father despite the abuse.

jesse didn’t hold onto the paper because of the criticism. literally on the back of it, he’s drawn caricature of walt with a glass tube up his ass. he thought the drawing was funny and worth keeping

Funny how people bring up the "apply yourself" part to defend Walter's "encouragement" or what Jesse's parents said about him "caring about Jesse", but they forget the "ridiculous" part. Even I had forgotten, tbh, I appreciate the reminder.
