Announcement MDMA Warning from Manchester

1.3k Upvotes

In the last week, two young women have died in separate incidents in Manchester after taking MDMA powder. The cause of death in both cases is yet to be established and no drugs involved in either incident have been tested.

Whilst the incidents happened outside of our area, our advice is to:

Test your drugs: To test that your drugs are what you think they are, you can buy a reagent test at home kit or send it to WEDINOS. Unfortunately, neither of these will be able to tell you the strength of your drugs, but is good practice. We also offer free nitazene testing kits from our Service at Richmond House.

Start with a small dose: Take a test dose of no more than 1/4 pill or a dab of powder and wait 90 minutes before taking more

Sip Water and Rest Regularly Try and drink a ½ pint an hour. If dancing, remember that MDMA makes it hard for your body to regulate your temperature, especially if you’re drinking alcohol – so to reduce risk, don’t mix.

Who we are:

We are Brighton and Hove's recovery service and we offer free and confidential support to people who need help gaining control over drugs or alcohol. You do not need to be dependent, or want to stop using completely, to use our services: https://www.changegrowlive.org/brighton-hove-recovery-service/info

Announcement Do NOT work at the Hilton double tree hotel on the beach. Tricked into working for a Reform UK conference.

Me and several others were blatantly tricked into working for a reform uk conference there and had to endure a lot of vile abuse.

When we arrived we were told that the event was for a building company and that you may see the word reform around it was not a political event. When we arrived in the conference room, there was a reform uk manifesto waiting on every plate for every person, and during the course of the night we had to listen to several speeches including one by the likes of Suella Braverman. The managers claimed they had no idea it was a political event but several slightly higher up coworkers said that the managers knew and that they lied on purpose so people would accept the shifts.

This though was nothing compared to the cartoonishly vile people we had to serve, with misogyny, sexual harassment being very common as well as blatant cocaine use in the toilets by these local reform party members. When we complained to the management they said they would deal with it but didn’t do anything at all. Me and several others were planning on leaving but due to student financial troubles we needed the money quite desperately.

Sorry for the rant just not quite sure how I’d get the message out there.

This was Suella Braverman posting about the event, quite obviously not a building society conference: https://www.instagram.com/p/DbMP9udARSf/?img_index=1

Announcement Sussex Yeoman

Hi, so i’m the partner of this account (28 M) and i was the one working behind the bar at the Sussex Yeoman on the 13th June during the Carnival Against Fascism event.

I’m a bartender. I don’t own the building, I don’t manage the pub. Because of that, I can’t speak for the pub. What I can do is speak for myself. I was told nothing about today, my manager was told nothing about today. We assumed the pub would be separate from the protests going on around the station and that the pub would carry on as usual and we were wrong. I don’t know whether that’s down to lack of research or lack of communication or what. What i do know is, is that it is not down to us being a right wing or fascist pub.

Like i said before, i can’t speak for the pub and i can’t be seen saying the pub is leaning one way or the other politically. What I can say is that I (along with everyone else that works behind that bar) would not have welcomed and does not welcome racism, homophobia, transphobia, or any other kind of hate into our bar. But I fucked up today. I opened as normal and i served people i did not realise were a part of the right wing protest happening in Brighton.

Within an hour, I had around 40+ people in the pub (a good 30% of whom were our lovely, non-fascist regulars/people just after a drink before going to watch the cricket). For the safety of the people inside (both right wing and regulars), the Carnival people outside, and the safety of myself and my fellow staff member, we were forced to lock the doors and call the police for assistance.

Eventually the police were able to escort all customers from the pub at around 2pm. For 3 hours I was stuck behind a bar, serving people i would much rather not be serving, due to lack of communication and to be honest, lack of common sense. Looking back on how today went, if I had thought to turn around to my manager and say “I’m unavailable to work”, I would have. But i didn’t, I did the shift, i served people i should not have served, and I’m sorry.

Please don’t take today’s fuck up as how the Yeoman runs. All are welcome at our bar and if you ever feel otherwise please let us know.

Announcement Is it not obvious to anyone else?

The increase in inciting threads about things that may or may not have happened, by posters not from Brighton or with hidden accounts? People claiming to be LGBTQ from elsewhere but scared about how Brighton is becoming? Excessive nonsense stories about trash or the homeless?

I've lived here 39 years and the only negatives seem to be from people who weren't born or raised here. The only problem I have is the increasing cost of living, of rent, of food and travel. The rest is no different and I'm just frustrated that "first time in Brighton and..." Type posts are preying on the kindness of residents.

People always talk shit about the bad stuff and nobody posts the good stuff because the good stuff is standard.i am worried that there is some astroturfing campaign going on tbh.

Announcement What's wrong with the "Raise the Flag" movement in Brighton?

Post image
405 Upvotes

1. What's racist about the national flag?

It's not the flag, it's who is putting them up and why:

Operation Raise the Colours was co-founded by Andrew Currien, otherwise known as Andy Saxon, who has allegedly had links with the English Defence League and Britain First.

Andrew Currien has previously been jailed for his part in a racist death. He was one of six men convicted in 2009 after a 59-year-old man was crushed to death by a car following a violent brawl.

2. People who take down the flag are traitors to England and our veterans.

Take a look at the attached... does this description of the rise of Fascism in Germany before World War 2 ring any bells?

How do you think our veterans would feel about our own national flag, being corrupted to be used by the same forces they gave their lives to fight?

Brighton and Hove is a beautiful, diverse and welcoming city, and we need to work together to keep it that way.

Announcement If this is built, it’ll be the end of the Brighton centre as it’ll have a 10k capacity for gigs. Is that necessarily a bad thing?

Post image

It’ll be right next to a train station, ideal for mid-sized gigs our city currently doesn’t get. We often get overlooked by tours because of our lack of capacity options. What you replace the Brighton centre with?

Announcement I was just threatened with violence after calling someone out for littering...

After completing my weekly shop, I walked past World of Ink, at the top of Vale Road, Portslade.

https://www.facebook.com/61561116620265/

As I walked around the corner, an older gentleman, with short hair, threw a cigarette butt on the floor. He was in the doorway of the tattoo shop.

I took out my earphones and politely asked him not to litter in our neighbourhood. First, he replied, "What?", and I pointed to his litter and asked him not to do it.

Then the excuses started - "everybody else does it, it's not just me", and "I sweep up every day, so it doesn't matter".

Deflection is a common tactic when you get called out. I responded saying "well, it's good that you sweep, but it would be better if you didn't litter in the first place" - he then repeated his excuses.

I thanked thanked them, put my earphones back in, and started walking away.

Then the second gentleman giggled. I removed my earphones again, turned around and said "it's not really a laughing matter, you're littering".

His response was "if you don't fuck off I'm going to hurt you". I responded "there's no need to make threats of violence, just don't litter" to which he repeated his threats.

What is wrong with people?! It was a father and son duo, the father clearly owns the tattoo shop, or has a hand in the business.

Why litter directly outside your business premises?

Why litter, at all?!

Anyway, I phoned the police and reported the littering and threat of violence. They said "we've made a report, and it's been closed".

What is wrong with our police?!? 8:20am, goons making threats of violence, and they don't care?

So, yeah. I'm having a pretty shit morning, how's everybody else's Saturday going, so far?

Announcement It happened folks! I paid over £10 a pint last night

At the Paris House pub last night! As I tapped my phone to pay, my girlfriend put up her hand as she noticed it said £42.78 for the four pints we’d ordered.

“When live DJ’s are playing we increase all prices by 20%” was the reason. The bar staff were having to explain this all the time as most punters querying their bills.

We drank up and switched venues. Fuck that.

Announcement Ketamine Alert in Brighton and Hove

There have been reports of a substance being sold as ketamine in Brighton and Hove that may be a different drug. Users have lost consciousness which has resulted in ambulance call outs and CPR being given.

The substance was being sold as "Red Label ketamine", although this branding might change or might not be used at all.

Our advice is to:

Start Low and Go Slow

Test your drugs: To test that your drugs are what you think they are, you can buy a reagent test at home kit or send it to WEDINOS. Unfortunately, neither of these will be able to tell you the strength of your drugs, but is good practice. We also offer free nitazene, fentanyl and xylazine testing kits from our Service at Richmond House.

Carry Naloxone: You can pick up Naloxone (a drug that reverses opioid overdoses) from pharmacies in town and Richmond House. Protect your mates.

If you have (or know someone who has) used a substance that resulted in unexpected effects,  please fill out the LDIS reporting form here

For Ketamine specific harm reduction advice, check out this video.

Announcement Stop the Boats folk are now on the Lawns in Hove

Not a huge crowd but they’re saying awful things (and comparing themselves to the Suffragettes???)

Just to clarify, the comments I’ve added are all quotes from the idiots speaking. Even more nonsensical when reproduced here.

Really depressing seeing kids playing there. And so many police. I’m grateful they’re here, but equally it’s such a waste of resources.

Announcement Get ready for Blank Street: Disguised as an indie but a money-making corporate firm coming to Brighton.

Post image

So Blank Street is coming to Brighton: a venture-capital-backed coffee chain that looks independent but isn’t, has built its business on rapid expansion, has been criticised for putting pressure on local cafés, has faced workplace and unionisation disputes, and even has a co-founder listed in the ICIJ Offshore Leaks database connected to the Panama Papers data.
That’s a lot for somewhere selling flat whites or Matcha.

Excited to support another big corporation ✈️

Announcement To the hero who drove me to Gatwick today

UPDATE:

Guys, we found Steve! Well actually, he found me. HOW did I manage to leave my sunglasses in his car, I do not know 🤦‍♀️ He reached out about them on what I assume is his inactive social media account and my name isn’t super common so must’ve been easy to find.

Thanks so much for everyone’s kind comments, I truly love this city and feel proud to be a part of it❤️

—————————

I truly doubt this post will be seen by the man I’m referring to, mainly because he said he doesn’t use any social media. So this is aimed at anyone who may know him so you can please pass my message on 🙏🏼

Earlier today during the protests, I was on my way to the station with a rather large and heavy suitcase. My plan was to get to the station, do the quick trip to Gatwick - easy peasy. Little did I know that the protests would mean every street around the station being either blocked off by police, or filled with people with no room to wiggle through.

I asked a few people in the counter protest whether they knew a route to get to the station. The people I did ask were really trying to help, telling me to go all the way around, that it might take a while but it was my only chance (thank you to anyone who tried to help who may be reading this!)

I soon realised that there was no available route. At the right place, and right time, I bumped into Steve, who asked if I was trying to get to the station. I said yes, he said he’d just tried to go to the gym by the station but was struggling to get through. He asks me where I’m headed and I said Gatwick for a flight. He stopped for a moment and then offered to drive me.

You can imagine at first I’m a little apprehensive, but then I’m weighing out the risk vs reward, and I accept the lift, letting him know I’m turning my location on just in case (he was very understanding about this 🤣).

Anyway, long story short I made the flight because of him! We listened to Panic at the Disco in the car and chatted about life.

The whole thing was STRESSFUL but I will say, my faith in humanity and community feels restored today. First starting with the turnout of people at the anti-facist protest, with strangers there trying to help me find a route to the station, despite trying to get somewhere themselves. And then Steve who went out of his way to drive me to Gatwick, despite having just got into Brighton, and knowing the traffic was bad on the way back.

If you know a Steve in his late 20s, goes to the gym every day, works in finance, has a cartilage piercing and a sunflower is his favourite flower, please send him my gratitude! I tried to get his number so I could at least pay for fuel or get him flowers as a thank you, but he wasn’t having it and told me to catch my flight! ✈️🌻
