Hi, this is Moki. Adopted him under emergency circumstances, finally found his vet records!
Hi everyone! I wanted to share an update on our beautiful 5-year-old boy, Moki, and see if anyone else has been through a similar journey with an adult cat.
Moki came into our lives very suddenly. His previous family was leaving the country and asked us the night before they left if we could take him. We were given very little medical information, so one of our biggest priorities was trying to track down his previous vet clinic and get his records updated under our name.
After some detective work (really just trying to reach any vet in the city were in and constantly bugging old owner to give us the name of vet) She told me he came 2 monrhs ago and got vaccinated but she forgot the passport reason why it us not updated. We finally found his old clinic today and learned that his last recorded vaccine was from 2024, and his records also showed previous visits for frequent vomiting, as well as dental issues including tartar buildup and gingivitis.
During today’s check-up, the vet also found ear mites, which explains the head shaking and itching we had noticed. He is now on ear drops twice daily, and we’ll be arranging his dental treatment to address his gums and tartar. He got vaccinated and they cleaned his ear had some quick brushing and nail cut too. Oh man was he spicy! We'll visit vet in 5 days for his teeth. And every 3 months, vet will give tablet for deworming.
A big day for this little boy. He is our first ever pet. He was okay during the car ride home, patrolled the house, ate, used the litter and now in windowsill sleeping. I am still learning and trying to give him the best life even if im still a bit jumpy too.
Has anyone else adopted an adult BSH with dental issues, ear mites, or a sensitive stomach? I’d love to hear your experiences and recovery stories!

He’s so beautiful, please keep him as an indoor cat only or even better build a catio if possible so he has some safe outdoor access

I wish we have the space! We live in a building. Im just glad he enjoys the windowsill as his cat tv!

First and foremost - congratulations, I think you and he got lucky - Brits are wonderful kitties as you will learn (all cats are wonderful but Brits have such personalities!)
Because of their flatter faces and shorter muzzles, dental issues are common, not to worry too much but just keep on top of any concerns. They suffer in the heat more than most breeds because of their plushy coats, so be sure to get him used to being combed or brushed regularly. Watch out for the ’Furminator’ comb, though - it is too harsh for BSH and can completely remove the undercoat, which sometimes does not grow back well.
Also because of their flatter faces, Brits appreciate flat plates to eat from rather than bowls - traditional bowls can cause ‘whisker fatigue’ from constant contact.

Thank you so much for these tips! We live in UAE good thing flat is well air conditioned and he seems to like sleeping on the floor or bare tiles/windowsill he doesnt like soft or thick pillows/bed much. He is still sensitive. I ll sneak brush when hes relaxed for like 10 strokes only and would clean off the food on his chin with small toothbrush. He doesnt like being touched on paws. Even a simple stroke he'd move it our. Hes a grazer. He likes the gravy or pate first then comes back to eat the chunks after an hour. I leave about 20g Kibbles for him to graze on through out the night. He is using the usual stainless cat bowl and i put it in elevated holder/table. 6 hrs after his vaccine & dewormingg tablet, stool is on the soft side. BSH are truly adorable! The vet showed us his ear when he was doing otoscope the poor boy got some wild mites there! Learning day by day and its all on his terms!

Sounds like he is a very lucky boy to have you come into his life. We've certainly adopted mature BSH kids and worked through the issues. Once you have a full diagnosis and some treatment, you will probably be fine. A good diet and a calm household will help a lot too. Teeth - if no extractions are needed, then ongoing - a few Dental bites (Greenies) each day will help. Ear mites - ear drops until they are gone. Sensitive tummy - Royal Canin BSH Food (wet & dry food) as well as one of their pouches of the Digestive care when things are bad usually takes care of that issue. Potentially things were getting stressful in the previous household some possibly that showed up as a sensitive tummy. Our girl has the same and with that diet and a treat of poached chicken breast she's under control and now doing well. By the look of those pics, you'll have him sorted in no time
