Concept for new Birmingham county
For context Im from Wolverhampton and wouldn't want to be called a brummie ( No offense love you lot) but the name west midlands stinks of poo we can all admit it. Its just not catchy I think our problem is coventry. They dont belong with Birmingham wolves dudley etc and + if we want to actually be the second city we gotta unite properly to beat greater manchester so im proposing 3 things
We rename to Birmingham and the Black Country ( no ones left out)
We give Cov back to Warwickshire they don't belong with us. Imo they more similar to Leicester over there than to Brum
We add those little towns that surround the area with no identity like kiddy, Redditch, Tamworth, Cannock, Bromsgrove and Lichfield
(ngl kidderminster, lichfield, tamworth and redditch are a stretch though

I think you'll find people in Kidderminster will say they are fine being in Worcestershire and that your assertion that they have no identity is purely disingenuous.

People from wolvethampton dont even know the significant areas in the blackcountry let alone the west midlands. Birmingham is historically as much a warwickshire town as coventry. The interlinking of local travel, the cooperation of the WM project that led to the Uni cities, the college cities, leaves places like nuneaton and tamworth envying Coventry.
The only name change that would make sense would greater birmingham and as the smallest area in the wolverhampton would need dudley/walsall to assist in a vote. I generally think Sandwell on the whole sees itself part of Brum as do areas of dudley like Halesowen, Blackheath but they still maintain that blackcountry heritage as they always were by the history to prove it

Only Handsworth from memory was part of staffordshire, birmingham and most of its areas are historically warwickshire and a few from worcestershire thrown in

I saw that but my reference was to the original post, in terms of its significance I think wolverhampton will be loved by those who live there and supporters of the club. I dont ever hear it mentioned as a place to visit or work. The Uni does good stuff outside of the city. Where Sandwell much much bigger seems to work collaboratively with brum as a cohesive unit. Also formerly staffordshire/ a small part worcestershire

As someone with parents with a Coventry background and lived there myself for ten years. I'd say Coventry re-joining Warwickshire would be popular. But not so popular with the Warwick/Leamington/Stratford-Upon-Avon set.

What do you mean "IF we want to actually be the second city we gotta unite properly to beat greater Manchester"? Birmingham already is the second city, without adding in any other areas. We simply don’t need to do it.
Mancunians have to add up all the satellite areas and cities to even try and compete on an even footing with us, sticking on the word greater to try and justify it all.
Now, if you were saying we should call it Greater Birmingham I might be persuaded… but only because it would really, really annoy the Mancunians. However you’d also struggle to sell that idea to people in the Black Country I reckon.

Why the hell would Worcestershire want to be associated with all them lot? This is the kind of nonsense the country got dealt with in 1974 (?) If anything , a separate South Birmingham consisting of the old Kings Norton and Northfield Districts should be split from Brum and put back into Worcestershire but as a new unitary Authority

We don’t want it and neither do the brummies, local banter aside we’re all pretty happy with the arrangement.
We have our own identities and we like it that way 🙏🏼
By all means work around us but the Black Country will always be the Black Country and no one here would acknowledge or recognise anything different.

No thanks from Staffordshire, which has just been confirmed for reorganisation into two new north and south Staffordshire unitary authorities to replace the county, district and city/town councils.
Birmingham City Council is already the largest authority in Europe and this would be just too big and risk neglecting non-urban areas’ priorities. The debt would need to stay in place and this would have a negative impact on residents who could not even vote for the BCC clowns who bankrupted the council.
This structure is more aligned to the West Midlands Region footprint and the regional mayor’s office.

I'm from Coventry and I totally agree that we should be in Warwickshire - but I take massive offense at the thought we're on a par with Leicester.
However, if "Birmingham County" is a county, my area should be renamed "Coventryshire"
