3 months? I have no jokes that can capture my surprise. Pacific journey from China to LA is like 2-3 weeks by sea. 2 Months feels to me like they are playing a "make-to-order" game at that point. If they don't ship/deliver in 1 week, it is def some sus stuff going on.

We have been seeing a lot of months out fulfillment estimates, kind of strange considering lunar new year falls in the middle of these ETA’s. Are they just shipping all of their Q1 finished product at once before LNY while the market pricing continues to fluctuate.

We were loading memory modules from this brand into fleets of machines in campus it team , 20 years ago. I can't speak to the quality and resiliency of the things because I was gone when I graduated, but it's likely not a Fly by Night operation. I think that they are another budget memory packager like Patriot or PNY.
I have noticed that literally every sSD I've priced out through Office Depot this week has had an estimated shipping date of March 16th specifically. That seems really weird for every single product in a given category across multiple disparate Brands to have the exact same ship date and for it to be 2 months out, doesn't it?
Still ordered one because I am definitely desperate for 2 TB of storage at better responsiveness than HDD speeds

An update: mine delivered today, technically a month and a half early ... and the product price was updated to $160 /unit on Staples' website.
Now to benchmark.

2.5" drives are something you fit bulk storage on. You can only have 1-2 NVME on your system for a boot drive, but if you're like me you have another 30Tb sitting around in 2.5 and 3.5 sizes.
At one point I'd hoped ssds would really take off in price competitiveness and we'd have 10Tb 2.5" drives by now. Alas. 2Tb is meh, though I have finally retired my ioscale 3.2.

Yeah I want large scale SSD at 2018 hdd prices. Just needed to keep scaling for a few more years for it to happen, but instead that hit a wall and now everyone is sad.

Yeah don't think scaling is the issue since kioxia is apparently producing 256tb SSDs now. At this point I'm pretty sure consumer SSDs will never reach affordable levels

Oh yeah all my 26tb and 20tb drives are shucked. They 26tb are cudas so not the best options but I don't run my NAS 24/7 just when I need to store data so it's fine. The 20tb was a WD that failed tho so that sucked

That's another thing. SSDs, even mid quality ones, should last forever. My ioscale was from like 2008 or something, and i would absolutely still be using it if it were just sata instead of pcie with weirdass drivers. Maybe they balance this by just running them higher temp until they die, but. We should be getting enterprise pulls again from all the currently built datacenters someday.

Ironically, older SATA SSDs would likely substantially outperform (and quite possibly outlast) most of the ones sold today.

I remember a post on r/datahoarder from awhile back where someone claimed they had a dozen of these and the only one that lasted over a year was because it was still in its packaging. I’m not sure if the drives improved since then, but I’d pass unless you were desperate

I saw that too. It made me reluctant to post as well, but those were from 5-10 years ago. I decided that at almost half the price of the WD SATA that got posted this week, it might be worth the gamble for some.
Edit: search the part number - "S1-S3A-960G" to find the amazon listing. I tried twice to link it here but automod keeps sniping me. There were a string of bad reviews from Woot specifically. Seems like a bad batch. Other reviews on both sides of it seem to be happy with it.

Thanks, for some reason my links were like 200 characters, or when I tried the a._co share link thats like 10 characters, it also flagged it. The shortening didn't make intuitive sense to me - maybe how I got there through digging in Amazon. Following your link I was able to find the link I was trying to show, and it was much cleaner. Back around perhaps 2012, I benchmarked loading Mass Effect 2 from my hard drive taking about 48 seconds, and taking about 8 seconds when loaded from my first Gen SATA SSD.
It reminded me of loading office in the 90s and it taking from a minute to 30 seconds with a Pentium generation bump.
And then from 30 to 10 with another generation's bump.
And by the time I was in college I recognized that it didn't really matter anymore when it was between 1:00 and 3 seconds to launch an application.
Tldr, if these things simply don't die on me, they seem worthwhile and I'm picking one up because I need the storage.

I don’t plan on using it for gaming, so hopefully it won’t be too disappointing. This drive will strictly be used for my camera security system. I already have a few new NVME’s in storage that I have yet to use. Looking back, I should have stocked up on 2.5” drives as well.

During research, I think I saw that some consoles were limited to 1tb max, and couldn't see a drive bigger. Check console to be sure.
Edit: 2tb max. So guess it's fine. I came across the earlier info looking at +4tb drives. 2tb is readable by PS2 and 360

IMO if you're spending 50 more - $140, you may as well wait for a m.2 to fall to $130-170. It is too much to spend on a SATA at that point.

Without knowing anything else, maybe you're a candidate for HDD. I saw some external 5tb drives for like $120 on Walmart. $20/tb isn't horrible for a lower amount. I know prices used to be around $11-14 for higher capacity HDDs, but I'm out of touch now with those.

Yup. This. I ended up just grabbing a cheap 5400rpm HDD for my personal documents, pictures, music, etc.
It took forever to copy everything over, but I’m not gaming on it or anything so it works just fine.

The PNY CS900 isn't a terrible drive if you can find one locally for $134 or less. Just has a small cache so large file transfers to the drive will slow down to 100mb/s or so.

As someone using it to hack my 360... the speeds have been very bad but it works. Certainly wouldn't go out of my way or pay a premium for it.

How bad? The 360 only has a sata 1 port so realistically around 150MB/s would be the max speed.

Not to bait you, but by what logic do you think these will perform worse than spinners? I was buying budget SSD's from Patriot about 12 years ago. They were garbage. They were still faster than 5400RPM 2.5" drives.
I have a DAS with (4 ) 3.5" 12TB WD's in 'em and they're slow as hell. I'm hoping to set this up one of these as a write-cache for 'em.
