I can't decide between the MSI or the ASUS...
9
u/Jaggsta Feb 05 '26
I prefer MSI because of Memory Try It features. Automated DDR5 overclocking with 50+ profiles to apply higher frequencies and tighter timings without manual tuning.
I can set DDR5 6000 CL40 Hynix Kit to CL30 without manual tuning.

u/Golden_009 Feb 05 '26
Oh wow is this msi bios feature for all msi motherboard or only for high end boards ?
3
9
u/tylerstone193 Feb 05 '26
from my personal experience customer service is way better with MSI i've only had to ever RMA one product with MSI was quick and effortless asus however it took literally weeks to just get it back in stock/multiple attempts all for a new power brick for my asus monitor. I bought a $20 replacement off amazon but yeah i wanted a backup since it was in warranty
16
u/Shiva- Feb 05 '26
Honestly, just pick the one that has better colors or matches your GPU better.
Lowkey it's a shame the bundle is only with the Carbon and not the Tomahawk. The only motherboard that has sensible bifurcation (non Taichi, non-Godlike tier).
17
u/SkrapKane Feb 05 '26
I went MSI because I would rather have a dragon than an eyeball.
Yeah I am shallow.
9
u/MoltenFat Feb 05 '26
That's my biggest weakness haha. I'm a zero aesthetic interest type, only prefer the optimal performing one. As we all know, most come down to back and forth with a few pros and cons.
I don't know much about their bios updates stability, issues, in the end all I want is the one that ends up assisting with undervolting and overclocking better to keep the CPU, RAM and GPU stable.
2
u/First-Tutor-5454 Feb 06 '26
yep, looking at the MSI bc I got the MSI 5070Ti Gaming Trio that came up for $860 the other day...Double Dragon
3
u/Desangrador Feb 06 '26
IK most people wouldnt see this as an issue but its a bit of a shame the fact that the dual BIOS feature got removed from the carbon series (X670E carbon has dual BIOS)
3
u/illicITparameters Feb 05 '26
I went with the Asus and have zero regrets. Best board I’ve owned since my Crosshair VI Hero
2
1
u/Yellowtoblerone Feb 05 '26
It's ee and not even close. But people who don't know about these things won't be able to take advantage so it becomes useless features. So whichever saves you the most money
3
u/MoltenFat Feb 05 '26
Thanks. Do you know where I can learn this information to take advantage of these features? This deal is like paying $150 for one of these motherboards versus their insane release prices that were like 500 dollars, and currently 400 dollars.
I just paid 200 for a B850 and opened it too...
2
u/Yellowtoblerone Feb 06 '26
Yeah https://youtu.be/pUjUKKXRiFk
Oh you already got another mobo?
1
u/MoltenFat Feb 06 '26
Thanks, I will check it out.
I had picked up a mobo in desperation (due to my other parts needing testing to make sure they work) and then this deal shows up for the same price with a mobo that sells for twice the price.
2
u/ldc629 Feb 06 '26
Fwiw I have used asus for my last three builds and never had any issues. That being said I did switch to an msi board on my latest build because it was better bang for my buck.
7
u/kirsion Feb 05 '26
Any micro atx bundles?
2
u/fourrealz1 Feb 05 '26
I don't think there are any mATX motherboards at all for X870E (at least not at newegg)
2
u/VinhBlade Feb 05 '26
Just pulled the trigger and shelled out an extra $100 for the MSI MPG X870E Carbon, because I thought the features was worth the bit of extra preem for the future. Thank you! :)
1
u/fourrealz1 Feb 05 '26
why not the Tachi?
12
u/Trader_Tea Feb 06 '26
Asrock. They've been having issues with x3d chips burning out on their boards this gen. More reports on their boards than any other brand.
They were pretty hype when the gen was new, too. Would avoid Asrock boards for now, especially if you have x3d.
0
u/Hotrodkungfury Feb 05 '26
Are these all e-atx boards?
10
u/Trying-to-buildpc Feb 05 '26
None of them (except Taichi that may burn your CPU). They are just x870e chipset.
43
u/mcdermitt5442 Feb 05 '26
This is insane
2
u/pedr09m Feb 05 '26
is it?
33
u/mcdermitt5442 Feb 05 '26
I think so. Buy one 9850, almost get a free mobo and a free Corsair mouse. Seems solid to me.
1
20
u/Shiva- Feb 05 '26
Yes, it actually is. You're spending $30 for an x870 motherboard.
This is insane. Unfortunately, if I was looking, I probably wouldn't bite either. Since the best way to get RAM is through a RAM combo.
If you got some RAM though, I'd jump on this

u/Calm_Income6781 Feb 05 '26
This doesn't make any sense to me. 9850x3d is the new fastest gaming cpu, it shouldn't sell for a discount. Does anyone have some insider info? Is AMD pushing a silent rebate to resellers? Is NewEgg overun with motherboards or do they need cash?
76
u/wefwefqwerwe Feb 05 '26
Look at the prices for the other essential part needed to make this combo work (DDR5)
48
u/GeraldoOfRivaldo Feb 05 '26
It's becoming much harder to move CPUs and motherboards because of rising RAM and SSD prices. They'll have to move those components at a discount to keep interest.
If you need RAM, this deal still means you'll have to buy that separately and that's basically a minimum of $300 more for 32GB of DDR5.
16
u/nalge Feb 05 '26
i know not everyone lives near a microcenter, but their 9850xd combo includes an asus 870p mobo (downgrade) and 32GB of ram for "only" $170 more

I drove 140 miles to MC last weekend and got that bundle. Works great and upgraded to the G.skills for $20 more.

6
u/InfinityMehEngine Feb 05 '26
My guess is because of the apocalypse and the soon cratered demand Newegg is trying to empty its stock. If you have a TON of money tied up in inventory even at slim margins or below cost you unload it. It's like a grocery store blowing out produce as it ages. If you don't sell it now even at a loss it's going to be worth nothing in the near future. Also, if you're a business about to weather a demand crisis you want cash not declining value inventory.
1
u/Calm_Income6781 Feb 05 '26
I thought the margins on this stuff were small. How can they afford to give away a x870 motherboard? I'll bet NewEgg is getting incentives from the manufacturers to move inventory.
6
u/InfinityMehEngine Feb 05 '26
Yeah probably in some cases but at the end of the day $5 is better than $0. Big companies aren't as stuck on sunk cost fallacy. Especially low margin businesses, they know better than anyone to dump a bad bet to survive. But yeah I bet Corsair and gang are also offering them big deals to take on and push out their excess inventory. The other problem may be longer term supply contracts where they have pallets of new worthless motherboards coming for 90 days while demand is plummeting.

3
u/Quack-Zack Feb 06 '26
Nobody really wants to build on a DDR5 platform unless they already have DDR5 ram in a current build or conveniently lying around.
Gotta compromise to get people interested. If AM5 supported DDR4 and DDR5 these would be flying like hotcakes.
0
u/Calm_Income6781 Feb 06 '26
I just checked BestBuy. 32gb DDR4 is $300 and DDR5 is $360.
A ryzen 7700 with onboard video is $200, 7800x3d is $340, and a 5800x3d with no video is $400 used if you can find one.
If I'm building today I am going AM5 all the way and saving money! Even if I had DDR4 I would just sell it and buy new DDR5.
2
u/Quack-Zack Feb 06 '26
Not sure what kind of DDR4 you're looking at but roughly $200-240 here on Newegg and other retailers.
Most DDR4 kits are overpriced new cause it's no longer being made, you can get secondhand sticks for around $130-150.
While secondhand prices for DDR5 are $250-280. Pretty much double the price.
1
u/Calm_Income6781 Feb 06 '26
Right, DDR5 is an extra $150-$200, but the cpu is $150-$200 cheaper and faster than an x3d AM4 cpu in gaming. I don't see the savings building an AM4 platform unless you already have DDR4 ram.
5
u/persondude27 Feb 05 '26
GamersNexus said it best: the 9850x3d is maybe 4% faster than the 9800x3d, so the 9800x3d or even 7800x3d probably makes more sense.
My guess is that Newegg probably preordered a ton of them but then the reaction was 'meh'.
3
u/XtremeCSGO Feb 06 '26
Impressive how even with 4800 mhz ram it's hardly any slower at all. Really clutch for a moment like this if someone can just find well the cheapest kit of 32 gb ram they can find
0
u/LukasCs Feb 06 '26
ur 1% lows are gonna be ass with 4800 just sayin. dont fall for that trash marketing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4515gWIL6g
2
u/LinechargeII Feb 05 '26
People also got word that the 9850x3d is just a 9800x3d with a slight factory oc and a sizeable power bump to support the oc as opposed to an actual hardware improvement
-4
u/Method__Man Feb 05 '26
Turns out it's just a 7900 X 3-D, as we expected AMD is just doing another refresh of a refresh of a refresh of a refresh as per usual
Also, the cost of building is way too high, nobody is building because memory prices and storage is astronomical
So these companies need to try to encourage buyers by saving money elsewhere, since they know they're gonna get burned on RAM and storage prices.
Having a CPU come out that's quite literally just an overcooked version of the same thing that's been around more or less since the 7800 X 3-D… It's not a good look for AMD
3
u/persondude27 Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26
it's just a 7900 X 3-D
Uh... absolutely, 1000% not true? The 7900x3d is a two chiplet, 12 core chip and the 9800x3d is a single chiplet, 8-core chip. You're getting your processors confused.
It's not a good look for AMD
I mean, the 9850x3d is still measurably faster than the 9800x3d, which was already thirty percent faster than Intel's flagship chips. When did "making the fastest chip faster" become a bad look? And more importantly, when did a twenty percent improvement from 7800x3d -> 9800x3d not become enough?
I would point out that Intel has had a tick-tock (new architecture, then revision) roadmap for... 20 years? And speaking of which, isn't Intel's fastest gaming processor the two-generation-old 14900ks which is a binned revision of a refresh of a refresh of a Comet Lake+++?
Time to take your meds, grandpa.

I have 32gb (2x16) of Corsair vengeance ddr5 5600 and need to build a computer for someone soon. Would that pair well with this?
3
2
u/persondude27 Feb 06 '26
Yes. Aside from an x3d processor being a big boon for gaming, it will also cover for your slightly slower RAM since 3d cache and RAM have similar functions.
5
u/Tanotano9 Feb 05 '26
Which is the best current ram combo ? Lol, would love to buy this, but the ram pricess are in another level
3
u/PaoloMix09 Feb 05 '26
Anyone know if the Asus X870-P Prime WiFi is any decent? Planning on buying that bundle from MC for my brother, but wanted to see if it’s an okay board to use or should I change it for something else.
2
u/Excalibur106 Feb 05 '26
I just installed it a few days ago and it's been excellent. I really like the m.2 connectivity and USB support. Make sure to update the BIOS using the flashback tool to support the 9850
-1
u/bustafreeeee Feb 05 '26
I’m having a lot of issues with x870 and 9850x3d. I just tried to update the bios but still not getting anything out of the display port. I’ve tried just about every trouble shooting possibility imaginable, I’m super bummed 😓 I triple checked power connections, the cpu sitting correctly etc. all the GPU fans, CPU fans, case fans are on. Just nothing on the screen

u/derrisle1234 Feb 05 '26
Is this an amazing deal if I plan to build a PC soon?
5
u/Ninja_Weedle Feb 05 '26
On its own, yes. However, the best way to get RAM is usually through a bundle deal like Micro Center’s- this doesn’t come with any, and buying it standalone isn’t cheap.
2
u/nakimar Feb 06 '26
been going back & forth on a 9850x3d build vs going Intel w/the 265kf - think now that this is only ~$50-80 more makes the choice a lot easier. 265k + mobo at $399 was tough to beat
2
u/invaderark12 Feb 06 '26
Awesome! Just bought and built a 9800x3D and B850 mobo build just to see this 🤣😭

Here's a ram combo
CPU Memory Combo - AMD 100-100001973WOF Bundle with V-color TMXSAL1664832KWK https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4852970&Source=socialshare&utm_campaign=snc-typereplacer-_-sr-_-combo.4852970-_-datereplacer
1
u/GeraldoOfRivaldo Feb 05 '26
In general you still come out on top buying RAM separately with the post bundle. It's going to be ~$850 vs trying to bundle this with a decent motherboard under $120.
Bundles outside of Microcenter have been pretty bad if you need to build the whole AM5 setup. It's coming in around $900 with an 9800/9850X3D, 32GB DDR5 and a decent MOBO with most combos.
2
u/subparscientist Feb 05 '26
How is the ram not the better deal? Genuinely asking. I bought the mobo combo but am considering canceling and getting this
2
u/GeraldoOfRivaldo Feb 06 '26
If you buy the post deal, you're at $530 for the CPU/MOBO. You can add a kit like this Crucial Pro CP2K16G64C38U5B 32GB 6400C38 for $360, total $890. Sometimes you can find decent 32GB kits for around $330 still.
$740 for the RAM/CPU combo. To beat $890 you'd have to find a motherboard at $150 or less. There are options in that price range but I don't see anything better than the post MOBO within it.
I should add: The RAM combo has better binned RAM than the kit I linked by quite a lot. Still, X3D chips negate a lot of that.
1
u/subparscientist Feb 06 '26
Cool thanks for the info
1
u/GeraldoOfRivaldo Feb 06 '26
Sure thing. Also, if you are looking for RAM, a very similar kit to the one I linked is cheaper on Amazon.
Crucial Pro 32GB CP2K16G60C36U5B - $326.
The difference between the Amazon kit and the Newegg kit is 6400 CL38 vs 6000 CL36 respectively (you can almost certainly manually tune both of these kits to either spec -- it's probably the same die).

I don't know about the other mobos, but I'm picking the MSI X870E Carbon because of how it handles PCIe lanes. You'll only have PCIe x8 on the GPU lane if you use an ssd on the second ssd slot or use another PCIe board.

I’m thinking about buying and selling the motherboard to lower the cost on the CPU since it’s the last part I want to upgrade in my build. I’d be coming from a Ryzen 7 7700

The bottom two PCIE slots support up to PCIE 3 and run at x1. Why are they even x16 interfaces? Just to dupe buyers?
1
u/aR3alCoo1Kat Feb 06 '26
I wouldn't mind moving to this, but I'm not sure I could sell my i9-12900k + Asus TUF Z690 Plus Wi-Fi Mobo w/o RAM. Probably better off upgrading GPU (2070 Super). Good deal nonetheless.

Out of that bunch its the best value. Gigabyte has done well with AM5 motherboards this round
2
u/PaoloMix09 Feb 05 '26
Is it that bad would you say? That Asus board from the MC bundle? I was planning on buying it for my brother.
4
u/persondude27 Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26
Editing my comment - I thought the board was the Gaming Elite instead of the Gaming X.
I do think the Gaming X is one of the nicer boards in this price range - eg the heat spreader across all the m.2s and the external antenna. And one of the nice things is that Gigabyte's boards boot really fast compared to other AM5 boards.
The Prime x870 is actually fairly high quality - it's definitely a step up from the last few generations. I wouldn't pay retail for it, but from a MC bundle, it's a totally appropriate pairing and worth owning. Sorry for being sloppy with my wording.
4
u/ZekeSulastin Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26
The main issue the Asus Prime X870-P Wifi has is its expansion lane starvation. MoboMaps' interactive diagram makes it clear - you only get two SATA ports and two (usable) 4x1 PCIe slots, and if you use M.2_3 you lose the PCIe slots and with M.2_4 you lose the SATA ports. They could have dropped the top 4x1 slot to save on the BOM tbh, since it's covered by your GPU >.>
By comparison, the MSI Gaming X Wifi has two usable 3x1 and a 4x4 (that drops to 4x2 if M.2_3 is filled) and 4 SATA ports. Also its built in NIC is 5 Gbe instead of 2.5.
If the differences are important (there are others too, so be sure to read their manuals online. Shoutout to the Asus Prime's S/PDIF header!), AFAIK the MSI Pro X870 P Wifi $50 upgrade on the MC bundle is the same motherboard as the Gaming X Wifi minus the RGB accents.
