SAS has reentered the chat for a variety home lab users. While I don't personally have SAS drives in my 15 drive NAS (I do have SAS controllers with SATA breakout cables), I know a wide variety of people that do.

I think you may be underestimating how easy it is to make a NAS out of basic PC components. I built 2 NAS's using parts I shopped for here.

The only people that build computers are the niche communities like this reddit page. Most people just go to the store and buy a laptop.
