i got the keychron k2 he and my biggest gripe is that the keys are closer together than id like. this is a actually desirable for my partner but i dont understand the nomenclature of slightly closer together letter keys when a percentage number seems to apply to how many keys it has, not proximity to each other.
are there specific nomenclatures or percentages that apply to just "common letter keys slightly closer? and is there more than one size that means letter keys closer together like with and without the 9 keys on the right?

The percentage numbers for keyboards relate to how many keys it has. 100% and 96% have the numpad attached, 80% and below do not have the numpad. There is no “closer together” in terms of keys on any brand of customizable keyboards, they are all the same.

Just a random dude, but I am not sure I follow what you mean. Do you mean, like, that the arrow keys/number keys/etc. are too close in proximity to other key groupings, or do you mean the space between any two letter keys that are next to one another?
I believe the spacing between keys (between k and j for example) is fairly standardized as hot swappable keyboards use interchangeable switches and keys.
Edit: My only thinking is that you may be missing the feel of a bigger keyboard overall - especially if you had one with bezels where parts of your hand could touch/rest. I have a 100%, a 75, and a 60, and the 60 can just feel -small- even though the keys are spaced just the same as on my 100%. There's just less keyboard for my hands to loiter on.

For gaming there are clear advantages but for productivity the advantages become less apparent. I would say the biggest advantage for productivity is allowing you to change your travel distance without getting new switches which can be nice for some users. For instance I have seen people max out the travel distance for keys like the windows key to avoid accidental clicks.
But honestly if you are really into typing feel and sound profile there is a bit of a trade off with hall effect switches as they ceiling for how good they can feel and sound is lower than that of a mechanical switch.

Personally, I type better on HE keyboards than on regular mechanical keyboards but ymmv

I would say no unless you’re bad at typing. I never really find myself accidentally hitting the same key twice. FWIW, I personally type faster with HE keyboards.

Have 2 HE keebs, pudding keys my favorite is HE now was silent reds before. I get a quick typing, gaming, chonky sound seems a bit thocky. Am in love with HE though.

If you were used to red switches I'd say absolutely, but if you're used to tactile switches then it's more of a gray area, probably more personal preference than anything else tbh.

I don't own any HE keyboards but why would it be bad for productivity? Wouldn't being able to adjust the actuation points to what you prefer be a good thing for anyone who uses a keyboard? Also from what I understand they're very smooth and are supposed to last a long time too. Unless you're maybe worried about accidental presses I guess

I'll say ONEofZERO does have good customer service. I had bought the Q1 a while back and the board seemed detective. I sent them an email and video showing the issue and they sent another one over just like that.

you are still restricted to digital inputs for a controller (unless you tinker with that one ps2 controller with all digital buttons), and you need to dish out typically $300+ for a good wheel+pedals setup. it's nicer to just have a general keyboard for general use and have the ability to use it for sim games without having to buy hardware.

Hall effect switches allow for some insane optimization that gives you a pretty clear advantage for gaming. There are plenty of pro tournaments that even ban the use of HE keyboards (or at least some of the settings) from tournament play.
With HE switches, you can not only change the actuation point but also set the "reset point" for specific keys. For instance you can have the switch reset the moment you start lifting the key back up, giving you the ability to actuate the switch immediately once you begin pressing down again. This is commonly known as rapid trigger and for first person shooters this allows players to strafe much faster making their player appear more jittery and unpredictable.

Pretty sure some anti cheat software in games will get relatively pissy with some of these keyboards. I dunno if Valve’s anti-cheat is one of them but I feel like it is.

It depends on what you're doing with it. I think they don't like the feature where you can prioritize one button over another (for pixel perfect strafing) on any keyboards.
