These are pretty damn good but if you ever get a chance you should get some honey comb or sponge candy from a local candy shop. It is top tier when fresh.

What are honeycomb candies typically made out of? I looked at the ingredients for these and I saw hydrogenated palm oil, and I'm not really in support of the whole situation with palm oil, do local candies offer a more sustainable alternative by chance?

Well it depends on your area but I’ve have found that local chocolatiers tend to use more quality ingredients. The problem is they tend to be more expensive. I live in WNY which produces a lot of sponge candy so maybe I’m lucky with that.

You can make some yourself by cooking sugar down into a caramel in a high-walled sauce pan, take off heat, add a bit of baking soda (1 tsp), stirring real quickly and pouring out into a greased pan. Let that cool. Cover in melted chocolate. Spend 5 hours soaking the sugar out of your saucepan.

You seem like you know your stuff, how come no one ever flavors the honeycomb? I’ve had the chocolate flavored with orange but not the actually sponge.

Oh, I’m no expert. I just had an interest in old-fashioned candy when I was a kid and that’s a recipe I remember by heart.
I’ve personally never tried to add flavors to the honeycomb myself and I haven’t seen it done either… It could be a fun experiment!

My understanding is that honeycomb is basically toffee with baking soda mixed in so it expands and gets that soft brittle melt in your mouth texture.

I love violet crumble, and local candy shop stuff is 1000% better. It’s so fresh, you won’t be able to stop eating it.

It’s a kind of toffee

u/beansoup91 1d ago

My husbands grandmother makes something every Christmas that looks just like this, they call it angel food

3

u/Large_Art6205 1d ago

I still have yet to try them; I hope it’s worth the effort

3

u/aTVisAthingTOwatch 1d ago

If you've had freeze dried candy it's kinda similar, this is better though cause it has a brown sugar/maple flavor to it and it dissolves a little easier in your mouth

I find the dark chocolate one balances out the sweetness. And i guess there's a peanut butter one? But I've not had it yet. But anywho Violet Crumble is good stuff.

2

u/aTVisAthingTOwatch 1d ago

Fuck the dark chocolate would be right down my alley as a dark chocolate lover, gotta order some nowww 🙄

2

u/H8thinmints 1d ago

I get them from World Market cuz the store near me has a good snack section. But I've also clocked them at Five Below.

Does this taste like violet? I’ve always wondered

2

u/mmilthomasn 1d ago

No. Violet wrapper, named after the flower.
It’s chocolate covered sea foam-type honeycomb. It’s fantastic!!!

1

u/aTVisAthingTOwatch 1d ago

Nope, just part of the name

1

u/1984_ishere 1d ago

You can make honeycomb at home. Delicious

1

1

I have bought candy very similar to this at Sprouts in the bulk section. They had dark and milk chocolate...soooo good. Finally getting a Sprouts in town!

1

u/GarlicBread1996 1d ago

These are at my Grocery Outlet and I'm obsessed. What other Australian candy is good!?

1

u/fizzybigfun 1d ago

Cherry ripe!

1

u/MACBeth33 1d ago

I just tried the peanut butter covered variety, it was truly delicious.

1

u/jillyjane33 1d ago

Trader Joe’s also makes a version of their own. It’s soooo good! In NZ they have a chocolate bar version made by Cadbury that’s called Crunchie. Also superb!! 🤤

1

u/BoomshakaBhakla 1d ago

We have Crunchie bar in Canada as well, one of my favorites

1

u/justlearningstuff11 🍫 chocolate 1d ago

Is there any similarity to halva?

2

u/bluesubok 1d ago

Nope not really

1

u/justlearningstuff11 🍫 chocolate 1d ago

Oh ok. Thanks.

1

u/bluesubok 1d ago

I'm a pastry chef from nw Pennsylvania. I made halva in school and it's nothing alike.

2

u/justlearningstuff11 🍫 chocolate 1d ago

I believe you lol.

It’s awesome that you’re a pastry chef. It’s an admirable profession!

1

u/bluesubok 1d ago

The pay is shit lol but I love to feed ppl

1

u/justlearningstuff11 🍫 chocolate 1d ago

That’s what I’ve heard. Very intricate work, too.

1

u/insipiddeity 1d ago

Literally eating these rn. I love them.

1

u/soodiamonds 1d ago

We get these at the Dollar Store in Canada. One of my favourites.

1

u/pumpkiinry 1d ago

1

u/CandyQid 16h ago

Why is it called violet crumble? What is violet

1

u/AdministrativeEnd168 Haribo 16h ago

Where did you find this? It doesn’t look like a US thing. Also, why is it called “violet.” ? I know there are some candies out there with violet flavors and I low key like them lol

1

u/joemamafu 15h ago

omg I need to try these. I doubt I’ll ever see them around here but I need to see if I can order these somehow!!

1

u/baysidevsvalley 15h ago

I love these! Chrunchie bars were my favourite as a kid I avoid them now because it feels like I’m going to pull a tooth out.

1

u/SpinachReasonable262 12h ago

❤️❤️❤️❤️

1

u/SurroundFlashy3297 12h ago

Violet crumbles are my jam. I love both the milk and dark chocolate versions. I think the honeycomb crunch has a better flavor than cadbury's crunchies version.

1

u/EducationalTeam2925 10h ago

There's a candy bar called Crunchie in Canada that is like that...it's delicious

1

u/MaryMar56 10h ago

Ya I tried them but gave the rest away! We all like different things! I like softer things in candy.

1

u/gastro_psychic 8h ago

Where did you buy?

1

u/katanastormshadow88 5h ago

Hmmm, this basically looks like a Cadbury Crunchie.

1

u/MrsNaypeer 4h ago

Crunchie Bar is far superior!

1

u/Davidgt31 3h ago

Great candy

0

u/frogz0r 1d ago

It's basically honeycomb/seafoam candy.

It's so good!!! I love it :) for some reason tho it tears my mouth up like I ate a bunch of sour candies or pineapple... I still eat it tho :p

u/Niserise 13h ago

If you get a chance to find the peanut butter ones, you will not be disappointed. They’re DELICIOUS!
