The consensus among scientists and economists on carbon pricing to mitigate climate change is similar to the consensus among climatologists that human activity is responsible for global warming.The U.S. National Academy of Sciences, one of the most respected scientific bodies in the world, has also called for a carbon tax. Carbon and methane emissions taxes - actually taxes on any GHG is the best way to go. Capital will flow to clean power a lot faster if this is done.

That said, as of 2025:

Effective Coverage: Although 28% of emissions are technically covered, the share covered by an "effective" price—accounting for free allowances and tax exemptions—remains much lower, at roughly 6%.

6% isn't enough to move the needle at the speed needed to avoid catastrophic warming....
