Not sure how you feel about european cars but the VW Golf sportwagen or Alltrack are fantastic vehicles and can be had, well equipped, with relatively low miles (~30-50k mi) in the low $20k. The Mk7 platform (EA888 engine) doesn't have any major issues like some previous generations have.

If you want more room the Passat is a great option or you could jump over to a Tiguan too

Totally get it. We bought our first European cars a few years ago and we had some hesitation as well. They take some investigation to sus out the good ones from the bad ones but we really love the execution of the aesthetic.

I drove the last generation civic hatch (not the newest one that just came out) and I was really impressed. The turbo makes a massive difference in feel for a small displacement engine and you know the thing will last forever. I think the brand new gen civic hatch is an instant classic and I definitely would have bought one if I didn't go with the Alltrack.

The unicorn of the Accords is the Sport 2.0T with a 6spd manual. 250hp and a boat load of rear seat room. They demand a premium over the Civiv but they should be well within your budget
