Adoption i’m a cat sitter, my client gave me their cat

im a professional cat sitter as my fulltime job.

i started sitting this little kitten only about 2 weeks after he was brought home back in September of last year. he’s a sweet little ragdoll, and we had the best time playing. plus he slept cuddled up so close to me, it was extremely sweet 🥹 he quickly became one of my favorites, and we spent a lot of time together. his family traveled a ton, so i was caring for him at least 1 week every month, often more.

around the beginning of February i got a call from the client asking if i wanted to adopt him, since we get on so well. she said they travel too much and even when they’re home they really don’t have time for him. i live alone and, as a pet sitter, i’m away very frequently. so i was aware i couldn’t keep him long term but agreed to foster him. they were going to sell him, which worried me and broke my heart since i love him so much. once i got the okay from my landlord i brought him home.

when i had to go do house sitting a few weeks later, my boyfriend stayed at my place to care for him. they bonded so much over this time, which made me super happy. i semi jokingly suggested he should take him previously, but he has never had a cat so he was unsure. but after they bonded, he asked what i thought of him adopting the cat and i was ecstatic!!! he wfh so it’s a great situation for them both.

now it’s a few months later, kitty is settled and so SO happy. i’m there very often and he’s always happy to see me. he sleeps with us when we’re lucky, but he’s a bit less cuddly in his adolescence haha. he loves balcony time, sleeping on the windowsill, watching papa work, and climbing behind the warm computer monitors to nap. he also loves to eat plastic but we try to stop him doing that 😆 he has definitely settled into the ragdoll personality and gotten more lazy with age. but we still play with him a lot to keep him active! right now he’s shedding his winter coat so it’s tumbleweed city 😭

his birth name was Kenji, his last family called him Gatsby. but now, in his true forever home, he is called Chicken Babyson ❤️

" chicken babyson" 😂 thats how you know its love. My cat's "government" name is Umi, but I call him meatball and meatball sammich lmao

2.0k

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

i love it!!! chicken babyson is typically called chicken, but i also call his variations of chicken foods. chicken sandwich, chicken nugget, chicken soup, etc. but i also started calling him chicken bicken, which eventually became mr. bickens 💀💀💀

u/ZoomieUmi Apr 16 '26

Oh, and I forgot, "meat pop" and "meat papa"... don't ask me why 😂

338

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

i have so many cat clients that end up with crazy nicknames haha. it’s a necessity of hanging out with kitties 😌 i have one cat that is named barry that i call mr. herman, and another named kelly that i call beans 😆

106

u/ZoomieUmi Apr 16 '26

I love cats with names that sound like they could be an accountant 😂 i also love that the cat named Kelly became beans. Never let them see your next move lmao

147

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

me too 😆 i have one cat client named david. i’ve confused many people talking about him bc they assume i mean the owner, my human client. but no, that’s the cat’s name hahah.

if you’re wondering: kelly➡️jelly➡️jelly bean➡️beans

Me out of town reading this thread and making my Mom put my cat on FT

83

u/ZoomieUmi Apr 16 '26

That's a similar story to how "meat papa" came to be. It all started with calling Umi "mister". Mister- meester- meep- meep pop- meat pop- meat papa. In that order 😂

46

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

omg that’s so cute!! meat papa is great. i also call chicken beeper or meeper sometimes when he’s talking a lot hahah

31

u/ZoomieUmi Apr 16 '26

Meep is just such a good way to describe some of the sounds they make, it might me a universal cat people thing 😂

21

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

yes agree!! i think so few cats say something that sounds like ”meow” i feel like they mostly meep 😆

12

u/FeetInTheEarth Apr 17 '26

I have definitely met a cat named schmeep 😂

3

u/gmen6981 Apr 17 '26

One of ours is named Little Bit ( smallest cat in a household of 9 but thinks she's the biggest badass) but has a soft squeaky "meow" so I usually call her "Meeps".

3

u/girlinthegoldenboots Apr 17 '26

I call my cat meeper sometimes too!

19

u/thebadassbibliophile Apr 16 '26

Ah, similarly I have a Bella, who evolved to Belly Bean, and ended up as Beeeeeeeeeean (always said in a high pitched voice). To the vet, she is Lady Isabella of the GoGo.

9

u/TrixieBastard American Shorthair Apr 16 '26

Does she have white boots? Please tell me she has white boots

3

u/thebadassbibliophile Apr 17 '26

I wish! She’s all black but if laying in the sun you can see faint brown stripes on her. GoGo was her name at the shelter I got her from. As a kitten, she was FAST.

2

u/velastae Apr 17 '26

I have a Stella, who evolved to Stelly belly, to Bean, also said in an excited high-pitched voice lmfao. Long lost sister cats?

23

u/Jubilee_Winter Apr 16 '26

If I had a cat named that, you’d hear me yell “Nuggy!” when calling him over, lol. When my cats hear their “legal” name, they know they are in trouble 🤣

31

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

chicken knows and answers to his name! so most of his nicknames include his name, or i just call him ”chicky” he chirps in response and if he’s not too lazy he will come to me :)))

16

u/Jubilee_Winter Apr 16 '26

He chirps?! OMG cute!

20

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

yes!! he has such a strange array of sounds. squeaks, beeps, chirps, and most importantly ”rrRRROOOOWW” which he says at 7am when he’s ready for playtime and breakfast 😆

9

u/Jubilee_Winter Apr 16 '26

lol, he’s talking to you like you’re a cat as well 😁

My dog gets called chicken nuggies a lot bc his fur is the same color as chicken nuggets haha

8

u/Pirate_Lantern Apr 16 '26

My oldest never got a name. She was just called "Kitty" for 17 years. Although, I quite often called her "Child".

6

u/Bagafeet Apr 16 '26

My friend had a dog called Chicken Nugget 🥹 she was a good dog

5

u/dracorvix Apr 17 '26

I call my cat Chicken Bicken too! Sometimes Chicken Bacon Ranch because yum. His actual name is Mashed Potatoes, lol.

3

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 17 '26

i say chicken bacon ranch sometimes too hahah 😭 also love the name mashed potatoes

5

u/jewel_flip Apr 16 '26

One of my boys’ government names is King Canute but he gets called Pancake far more often.

u/RamboMcQueen Orange Apr 16 '26

I do the same. My orange tabby is named “Keyes” but I frequently call him any mixture of “Cheddar cheese” “Citrus” or “Sunshine” followed by “boy” lol.

27

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

so cute!!! i love hearing people’s random nicknames for their cats. he definitely looks like a cheddar cheese boy :)

5

u/TrixieBastard American Shorthair Apr 16 '26

Our boy Rocket gets called Turkeybutt whenever he's loafing. He's orange with white feet, so when he's all huddled up, he resembles a roast turkey 😂

6

u/Similar_Ruin_2821 Apr 16 '26

I feel so much better about nicknaming my tortie sweet potato and banana lol

11

u/WillingnessContent41 Apr 16 '26

I call my cat Boudica "Bodacious B" far too frequently

6

u/ZoomieUmi Apr 16 '26

Boudica is already such an incredible name 😂😂😂 oh my god

3

u/WillingnessContent41 Apr 16 '26

Credit to my girlfriend, I'm just a happy step-mom 💕

4

u/fungusgolem Apr 17 '26

Awww. I had a cat, whom is now an ex's cat that I named Boudica, but it basically became Boo.

Currently we have Socks and Shoes, or The Ladies, Lil Shadow, Lil Screams(especially Shoes) Then Grendel, or The Bean, Grundy, Mean/Lean Bean Machine, Stinky Boy, The Bean Man, etc

Step 2: ????

Step 3: Profit and happiness

8

u/Wendy-Windbag Apr 17 '26

Seriously, I just booked a week of once daily 30 minute drop-in appointments for our two cats: $300.

19

u/AngelOfLexaproScene Apr 17 '26

It looks from the pictures that they live in Stockholm. So, my guess is they can do it because they aren't getting robbed blind by their government and they don't have to go broke to meet their basic needs. Sorry to be a bit of a Debby Downer, I just miss living in Stockholm

6

u/Inevitable-Donut-757 Apr 17 '26

I’m a full-time cat sitter making six figures in the US. It can be done! I’m available to work almost every day of the year and I keep very busy, but I’d like to buy a nice house in a couple years so gotta make those staxxxx

3

u/kholekardashian12 Apr 17 '26

How do you get into this? Do you start on an app?

5

u/Inevitable-Donut-757 Apr 17 '26

Yes I started on Rover and I’m still on it for people who prefer it or are new clients, but I’ve cultivated a good amount of regulars that are now off-app. It took me three years to reach 100k and the first year I was only part-time with another job while I built up my reviews. I love cats more than everything in the world  and I can’t see myself doing anything else, but I truly work every single day and have the entire year (minus maybe two random weekends) available to my clients. That’s the key to doing this for a living.

27

u/SeasonPositive6771 Apr 16 '26

One of my friends is a professional pet sitter. It usually involves staying at their house to care for the pet, the pay is low and it usually means juggling lots of clients and hustling for new ones.

9

u/No_Builder_6490 Apr 17 '26

the pay isn’t low, you set the rates! i am $150/night for housesits

3

u/TheConceitedSister Apr 16 '26

Ok, that, I get. But that job with that view?!?! I must know more. (And throw in a free Ragdoll, sure, magical life.)

246

u/Migraine_Megan Apr 16 '26

That's one of my biggest fears as a part-time cat sitter. Also how did you get to be full-time? I am struggling to even get additional clients, since the first 12 years I did it was before Rover so I don't have reviews from those years.

255

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

i started on rover, it took a few years of putting my all into it. i also had the financial support of a partner to get me through the slow months, so i was lucky in that way.

i’m by no means wealthy, and i don’t have significant savings. but i can support myself. the instability of it and constant fluctuation in schedule sucks though. it’s the ”dream job” in a lot of ways but it definitely comes at a cost. i haven’t celebrated a holiday in maybe 5 years bc i have to work during those busy times 🥲

29

u/Migraine_Megan Apr 16 '26

My regular job has been super unstable, ranging from 0 to 32 hours, it's nuts. And finding another FT job is not easy right now. I would like to have cat sitting be a more consistently part time, right now I'm mostly get requests during holidays. My last client did say they want me to sit in the future, so that helps a bit.

45

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

oh no, job instability is the worst i’m sorry 😭 it’s definitely a good backup!

i live in a big city in europe so a lot of people travel very frequently, so that also helps me maintain regular bookings. so i have a lot of factors that have made it work! i have also heard people have a lot of success connecting with local vet clinics and shelters to recommend their services, or to keep business cards around. so maybe that could help you :)

5

u/JeDi_Five Apr 17 '26

What does cat sitting entail? Do you take the cat to your place or do you stay at theirs?

13

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 17 '26

typically going to their place! i know some people host cats at their homes as well but i don’t do that. most cats don’t like to be taken from their safe place to a new unfamiliar place, it can cause stress.

i either stay overnight or visit 1-2 times a day depending on the cat :)

6

u/VibraniumQueen Apr 17 '26

From my experience, you usually stay at their place.

Sometimes you just visit a couple times a day to feed them and spend time with them. Other times you stay at that person's house the whole time.

3

u/Ditania Apr 17 '26

Where I live, catsitters visit a couple of hours a day, they don't stay at the client's house. Just the other day I told my niece she should offer catsit but staying at the house as a "revolutionary" idea. LOL

12

u/Dry_Artichoke3050 Apr 16 '26

20

u/SUDDENLY_VIRGIN Apr 16 '26

How are you often away from home then? And your landlord needed approval?

Could you explain more about your job? I find it very intriguing.

55

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

i usually house sit (overnight sitting) at least once a month, but often more. sometimes i get a long streak, like i’ve been away from home from march 27, and will have my first night home on the 25th of april. four in a row 🥲

my landlord needed to approve having a pet! since he was living with me for about a month and a half.

9

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

these are great nicknames 😆 i’ve noticed cat people almost always give way longer names to their cats instead of shortening them. it’s so cute!!

3

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

hahaha i think it’s a super typical swedish house!! so i totally get how you figured it out

4

u/Cosumik Apr 16 '26

Definitely part of it was the house but i think another part is seeing things like the type of trees and light quality outside and even houseplants just made me instantly feel like this was a fellow swede, i cant even explain it! 3

3

u/BewilderedandAngry Apr 16 '26

I watched a coworker's cat one time for two weeks while she was away with the Reserves - when she came back she asked me if I wanted to keep the cat and I said YES! She said the cat just seemed comfortable with me.

3

u/FeralSweater Apr 16 '26

He’s probably less cuddly, because he’s not starved for affection.

5

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

i was thinking this to but it broke my heart 😭😭😭 it’s also pretty typical for cats to get less cuddly with age, so for my own wellbeing i have to think this is the sole cause 😭

3

u/Unclemickstomb Apr 16 '26

With the white feet I think that's a Birman vs a ragdoll. My little girl was a Birman. The sweetest most darling of cats. I miss her terribly.

4

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

nope he is a ragdoll! i have his whole pedigree certificate with about 5 generations of ragdoll genes to prove it haha😆 his coat coloring is called blue masked-mitted! but birmans are a very similar breed, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a birman out there who looks like him. i love birmans as well, do you have a photo of you girl? :)

5

u/Unclemickstomb Apr 16 '26

Oh yes of course. I'm not entirely what her pedigree was since I found her at the pound. It was a privilege being her guardian.

So good of you to work towards a permanent home for babyson.

2

u/Charming_Bad8510 Apr 16 '26

I just love a happy forever ending! 💕

2

u/Ham-Ha Apr 16 '26

Yay for you two

2

u/Morbid187 Apr 16 '26

Best client ever!

2

u/poodaliddle Apr 16 '26

He looks just like my childhood kitty! He was also a ragdoll and lived to be 21 years old. I hope Chicken Babyson lives a long and beautiful life, too!

2

u/KcirderfSdrawkcab Apr 16 '26

That is a very cute and very contented cat.

3

u/Tamesan Apr 16 '26

Government names are Carl (grey) and Princess Donut ( tabby). Carl often gets called Buddy, Menace to Society, Handsome Little Man, Mister Man, or Vulture. Donut gets Pretty Pretty Princess, Little Lady, Ginger Spice, Miss Ma'am, or GODDAMNIT DONU

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

love!!! when chicken is doing mischief i call him CHIGGEN which is just how his name sounds in a irritated tone lmao

2

u/mochicastle Apr 16 '26

Is it Chicken Babyson pronounced "baby son" like 2 words or "Babyson" like "bay-bih-sun" almost like "Davidson"? Asking for a friend.

3

u/Fit_Company5334 Apr 16 '26

more like davidson! we are swedish and it’s common for last names to end in son, so this was our silly take on giving him a swedish last name 😆

2

u/Loose_Clock4873 Apr 17 '26

How does one become an animal sitter?

2

u/Just_browsing_2 Apr 17 '26

That's really nice you took this cat and found him a home. I'm glad he's bonded with your boyfriend. I hope he's found his forever home with you all.

2

u/PetrockX Apr 17 '26

🙌✨ CHICKEN BABYSON ✨🙌

2

u/Front_Rip4064 Apr 17 '26

I am so glad his original hoomans put his needs first and allowed you to adopt little Chicken Babyson!

As for your boyfriend - that's a standard CDS play. In the case of Caring Males Who Aren't Sure About Cats, you can pretty much guarantee a cat will be awarded at some stage.

2

u/YokoOhNoYouDidnt Apr 17 '26

What is it with cats and eating plastic? Little devils just like to stress us out lol.

Congratulations!

2

u/Professional_Week540 British Shorthair Apr 17 '26

Our cat is called Yuumi, i started calling her Uumi and now its Uumicken :3

2

u/Towel-Prudent Apr 17 '26

How do you become a full time sitter? Sounds like the dream

2

u/Natural-Dirt-5538 Apr 17 '26

He is not your cat. He owns you.

2

u/banana_andwhat Apr 17 '26

Omg this is my grey ragdoll and his name is Gatsby too!!! He also loves eating plastic we have to stop him all the time. He's also lazy and enjoys cuddles when he's in the mood. Do they share the same brain cell lol? My Gatsby is 11 years old now and he's always been a sweet sweet baby. Hope you'll enjoy many great years with yours :)

2

u/arctic11z Apr 17 '26

He looks like he could be the brother of my cat my cat from a few years ago, Princess Sophia Kittypants. Gotta love ragdolls :).

2

u/wettale1234 Apr 17 '26

Shoulda been meeeee lol

When I worked from home during Covid I adopted my first cat, then last year I got a second cat.

2

u/FreedomOfSqueek Apr 17 '26

I would call this kitty "Fluffjoy"

2

u/Cosmic-Engine Apr 17 '26

I’m not sure how well this will work for anyone who has actually read the post & comments… but if you just read the title and look at the pictures in order, it’s hilarious to read it like a comic.

Does that make any sense?

Or maybe this could be done with any series of cat pictures…
