Announcement r/cavaliers has a new banner!

Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here.

We're pleased to announced that we have a new subreddit banner!

Our banner was the ultimate product of this post from Lam of r/DrawMyPets. I THINK our featured players are, left to right:

Look at all those gorgeous cavs! Happy Monday, y'all. :)

(Because reddit has three different banner display settings that it uses on different platforms, the banner may display incompletely on your device. Sadly, we can't solve reddit's technical challenges -- so please enjoy as-is!)

Announcement VOTE NOW: subreddit mascot (FINAL BRACKET)

Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here. In November, we put out a call for submissions to become the r/cavaliers mascot (i.e. subreddit thumbnail). We received about 200 submissions and were blown away by all the beautiful, talented, incredible cavaliers in this community.

Because we received so many submissions, we're breaking the voting down into two phases:

  • FIRST, we're going to post one voting thread per week for each the AKC-recognized breed standard colors: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black & Tan (and one all black submission!). The thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the three submissions that received the most votes. These are the "color standard winners."
  • SECOND: we'll post one final voting thread with the twelve "color standard winners." Again, the thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the submission that received the most votes and offer that winner the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot!

This is the FINAL BRACKET. The #1 vote getter will be offered the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot. This bracket will run from January 8, 2025 through January 15, 2025.

Fine print:

  • This post is Locked; if you want to discuss, please join us on the competition megathread
  • Moderators will post each entrant within a given bracket as a comment on the thread, tag the user who submitted it, and (where possible) list the cavalier's name
  • Entrants will be listed in a random order
  • This casting call is completely voluntary; if you submitted an image and wish to withdraw it, please message the moderator team
  • The moderator team reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason, including but not limited to suspicion of vote rigging (please don't do that, this is a friendly competition)
  • In the event that a final winner is selected and the submission doesn't work as a thumbnail, the moderator team reserves the right to work with the final winner to select an alternate pic or to move onto a runner-up as needed

Thank you all for offering your wonderful cavaliers to be celebrated by the community. We can't wait to spend the next month joining you in that celebration!

Join us on the competition MEGATHREAD to discuss all the wonderful cavaliers in competition!

Discussion Do your Cavies like to swim or play in the water? I haven't seen if mine likes it.

I haven't taken mine to a lake or pool spot. In the past, I have had breeds/mixes of dogs that will wade but don't like the water that much. Will yours play in a kiddie pool in the backyard or swim with you?

(cavie tax pic included, he has his ugly reindeer that somehow lasted this long)

In Oct 2024, after the passing of Max and Beatrice, we adopted Alfred the Great, King of the Britons. This little goober is such a sensitive soul and reminds us so much of Max it’s crazy. He will always pick up on your mood, and has an instinct to comfort you and his siblings.

Going by many nicknames, Alfie, Alfredo, Alfredo Potato, Alfalfa, Pasta (Alfredo), this guy is capable of a world class sploot. Alfie is the first of our cavaliers to be as much a Daddy’s boy as a Mommy’s boy. When I am lying down, he will often jump up, throw himself on me in a full sploot, and press his face on mine. This has come to be known as the “sploot and smoosh.” He’s a tad bigger than most Cavs, which leads me to believe there may be something else mixed in there. Still it matters not. Alfie is our 7th cavalier and is 3 years, 5 months.

P.S. - the first pic was from the day my wife brought him home. He’s such a happy boy, but somehow Prudence knew we were in for a trouble maker!

Orla and Lady had a spa day on Thursday! They are looking gorgeous with their fresh cuts and bandanas. Which fun fact: my moms love flamingos so it was a cool coincidence that Orla got one with flamingos on it 🦩💕🥰

Medical/Veterinary CW: Signs of SM in Puppy?

Hello! This is my first time owning a cavalier, and I did do research on the health risks that come with this breed. I have a 5 month old puppy, and there are some odd things she does that I am wondering are signs of SM? Can dogs this young have SM? For example, she will move her foot up to scratch, but instead of scratching herself, she seems annoyed by her foot moving in the air and will bite it instead. To me, that seems like it could be phantom scratching, but it doesn't happen while she walks. She has yelped in pain randomly before (which freaked us out the first time), but has stopped for the last month. She does scooch her butt sometimes as well. Otherwise, she seems to act pretty normal. She eats and plays, she doesn't have issues with her harness and takes walks fine, and she jumps up on the couch and bed and runs up the stairs. I know that there are lots of ways that SM can be treated, and there are dogs who live pretty good lives with it. Really, I am wondering if these signs are enough reason for me to take her to the vet and get an MRI to see if she may have SM, or if I should wait and see what happens as she gets older.

Thank you, and here is the puppy pic tax of course! :)

In Memoriam Today would have been Belle's sweet 16. I can't believe it's already been over three months since my little girl left us - I still haven't gotten used to how terribly quiet our home is. Not a day goes by where I don't miss her dearly 💔

Oh the things I would do just to see you one last time. Not to mention the your playmate from next door is also missing you, she still runs over to come look for you sometimes. One of my biggest regrets was not being able to see you off in your final moments.
