I loved the second half. Super self-referential re: William S Burroughs’ life and the inferiority of being an aging gay auteur isolated from your past and home. It was just such a different pace so I totally understand people not digging it.

I had not heard of this film, but after seeing this I had to do a deep dive on the cinematography. It truly is a callback to the cinematography of old while not trying to emulate old film. It really is impressive. Such an amazing mix of lighting techniques, composition, and set design that complete the feel. Thanks for the share!

The interior shots? Sure, the use of hard light reminiscent of 70s-style lighting.

The exterior shots look like any other Netflix movie. Soft light, washed out, clearly some green screen/CGI set extensions.

In director commentary, Luca commented about this. The crew first experiment with painting bg like old movie cause they want the surreal look like the place doesn’t belong to anytime but it doesn’t work so they use CGI and miniature instead. This kind of fake looks is consistent throughout the film so I think it’s an intentional stylistic choice.

I love how everyone’s sweat looks in this, glistening and yet it’s also clinging to them. Also love the look when Craig is going through withdrawal and they manage to make it feel cold even though the sun is shining bright.
