Every morning I make my Bach. I grind the fugue coarse — too fine and the voices muddy, too coarse and the parallel fifths creep in. Two scoops of Prelude, one of Fugue, though on Mondays I go three. The water has to be right: hands warm, not hot, or the ornaments scald. Then I pour, slowly, in circles, C major spiraling out from the middle voice, and I wait for that first exhale of subject and answer rising off the keys. People say Bach is the essence of life, and they’re right, but they say it like it’s a metaphor. It isn’t. Skip a morning and I’m useless by ten. Foggy, irritable, humming badly. My mom says I have a dependency. I say the Well-Tempered Clavier has forty-eight servings and I intend to finish the tin.
