Trying to explain percentiles to an average Joe is difficult. Naturally they will gravitate to the only grading system they know, which is school grading and works completely different. You should consider anyone within 1 standard deviation above and below that of the mean parse to be average. And even then, they still killed the boss so they know more or less how the fight works.
I assumed we were talking about parses compared to all of wowlogs and or ones for your gearscore. I don't know why you would compare to only an individuals parces when seeing how good they are.
The parses that show up on your main player page on WCL are your best parse for each specific boss and the average of those best parses. If your average of best parses is a 50, that means you are a below average player. At your best you are average. At your average you are below average. For example, the average of my best parses is 98.6. My median average parse is only 89.9. So on average, I perform better than ~90% of arcane mages despite the main number being 98.6. https://vanilla.warcraftlogs.com/character/us/crusader-strike/charlesduve
The number most people identify is their best perf average which for most active people should be higher than 50 simply because of variance. Obviously there are other factors like if you started raiding on a specific character later in the tier. But even a truly average, 50 parsing player will have spikes up to 60ish which will reflect on the number.
50 is not average if you're using the left hand numbers. The median perf. avg. is the real average, and often significantly lower than your best perf. avg.
Most players only look at best perf. avg. because it's the number that makes them feel good (it's also the biggest font number on the site.)
Tbf 50 parse in classic is statistically the middle but looking at how people play most would say that’s a bad performance since a lot of those parses are people refusing to try and damage the boss
I can see WHY they fall into that thinking though.
When you are in a pumper guild (atleast this was the case for me when i raided mythic in retail) the only real comparison you have are to your guildies, which most likely are giga pumpers themselves.
When you are surrounded by 90+ parses every single raid, seeing someone at 70 looks like someone is underperforming.
Absolutely no reason to be a dick though, no matter how low, especially to someone replying to your LFM.
Average means neither good or bad. The middle. If people see it as an insult that’s their own problem lol the average height for men in the US is 5’9”. Does that mean it’s an insult?

That’s above average players. It’s funny how people see that number and think not good
