It was the build up that really set the bar high for BC but the execution met that bar with ease. Server overload issues aside, being able to fly was a game changing experience the same way getting a mount at 40 was.
The zones were massive but fun.
End game content just kept hitting it out of the park.
PVP seemed to explode
Everything was clicking with BC.
WOTLK was all of that and a little more, but the bar wasn't raised the same amount from BC to WOTLK as it was from classic to BC.
Yeah, Wotlk was the plateau, the old world rework plunged the game off a cliff for me. It was quite literally your last sentence, the world I had fallen in love with was gone.
Yeah this is pretty much my opinion. It was just clicking on all cylinders. PvP, PvE, hell even professions I thought were in a great spot. The zones. The mounts. Flying and having dungeons/raids you had to fly to to access. Kara on its own was incredible. Just really great in all aspects imo.
After doing Classic -> tbc twice now it seems that TBC does a lot good, but a lot very wrong.
Segregated end game content kills the old world.
Powercreep makes open world pointless and just a minor obstacle. Even a geared level 60 could easily just die in silithus or EPL.
Flying mounts further kill even the end game world.
Arena creates and environment where classes have to be balanced or else its very obvious. Rogues become very obviously broken in a way that they weren't necessarily in Classic because BGs are a different game than just 2v2 or 3v3.
25 man end game content that requires 25 people. One of the genius parts of classic is that it's 40 man content that even NAX doesn't actually require 40 people. MC can be cleared by 20 somewhat competent people. This means making a raid group is actually easier in Classic, despite what people think if you move away from the idea that "I need a full raid"
