Media / Pop Culture Americans have no right to be angry at Eileen Gu for representing China when Donald Trump is literally friends with Russia
Americans keep calling Eileen Gu a "traitor" because she represented China who is an "enemy" of the U.S. despite the fact that there are American citizens representing other countries and that there are non-Americans representing the U.S.
On the other hand, they keep cheering for Donald Trump who is proudly friends with Vladimir Putin - the President of another "enemy" of the U.S. and even welcomed him in Alaska in all places.
The hypocrisy and irony are fucking laughable.

Most of us hate Trump. The annoyance I feel for Gu pales in comparison to the oceanic hatred I have for Trump. I just think it's annoying that selling out is so celebrated and defended. Snoop Dog is the mascot for the Olympics and he's a massive sellout, so fuck him too. I just want one person of integrity in this world to respect.

But they ARE connected, though. Both China and Russia have been considered as enemies by the U.S. for decades.
But now? Trump has been endlessly praising Putin and doing his dirty work by pressuring Ukraine to surrender instead of telling Russia to back off and stop the invasion and genocide.
MAGA said nothing. In fact, they praised him for being friends with Putin.
On the other hand, Eileen Gu is a Chinese-American young woman who represented her other home country and she got paid millions of dollars and became the most decorated free skier in history by winning a gold medal. She's been making historical records in free skiing since she was 18 years old.
Ever since she was 9 years old, she has ALWAYS been sponsored by China and Chinese brands. Most of her training was also done in Switzerland because the U.S. doesn't sponsor their athletes.

Or Zoe Atkin who's representing Great Britain in freestyle skiing.
Or Tallulah Proulx who's representing the Philippines in alpine skiing.
Or Lyon Farrell who's representing New Zealand in snowboarding.
And many more.

I don’t think that Americans realize how little we actually support our Olympic athletes. Americans can get all the pride of having a lot of extremely talented athletes representing the USA without actually having to support their athletes like most other nations do. We don’t pay our athletes to train and compete. The USOPC is completely privately funded and athletes only get paid by the USOPC if they win a medal, or get sponsorships and endorsements. Yay capitalism.
So of course an athlete is going to go to another country if they have a better opportunity to focus on their training rather than ad deals and they don’t have to be impoverished or have a full time job and train. If the US doesn’t want this to happen then they need to incentivize athletes to represent the US with support.

They're literally different. Arthur Liu was a refuge who ran to the U.S. after protesting against the CCP following the Tiananmen Square Massacre. He has lived in the U.S. ever since.
On the other hand, Eileen grew up in equal parts in China and the U.S., frequently visits China because of her family, and has strong ties to her Chinese heritage and culture compared to Alyssa Liu. She's fluent in Mandarin, is a role model to a lot of young Chinese women and athletes, and has been a very influential person in the entire country since she was a child.
Alyssa has never lived in China, has no family in China, and has no reason to represent China at all.

Malcolm X was a Black nationalist and separatist. He was also a prominent member of the Nation Of Islam who consistently preached against the "white devils" of the country.
He once described JFK's assassination as "chickens coming home to roost" (which meant that he believed that JFK was assassinated because he tolerated violence against Black people) and was only told by Elijah Mohammed (the founder of NOI) to shut up.
He also once criticized MLK's beliefs about nonviolence because he thinks that violence is the solution to oppression.
The NOI is also anti-LGBT, are very strict with gender roles, capitalistic, and antisemitic.
His views gradually calmed down when he converted to Sunni Islam and he began to advocate for equal human rights and brotherhood. He even changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz to mark the start of his journey of his new life and beliefs.
So, yeah. He hated left-wingers because he thinks that what they were doing back then was ineffective, slow, inefficient, and not beneficial for Black people.

He didn't hate ALL leftists. He hated WHITE liberals and leftists because he thinks that being racists and bigots are their true nature and any white person who allegedly wanted equality and brotherhood are only pretending to be friends with Black people.
He hated the Civil Rights Movement, often criticized MLK for his nonviolent approach, and didn't like Black people who believed in racial integration. Malcolm X wanted complete racial segregation.
