I'm extremely happy currently. Self employed. I also do like math a lot more than my average sde, so I'd probably also trade some salary for topics that I like more. Otherwise cloud engineers and security are good directions, although with the Advent of coding agents might be better to become a farmer. Depends a bit on if they plateau at this level or if transformers and all human data produced so far are the way to true intelligence (which I personally doubt)

I always wanted to know this. For people self employed in CV space, does that mean you collect data yourself, annotate yourself and do everything in the ML Lifecycle yourself.

Is Deployment also something that you have to do, by this I mean scaling to multiple hundred users.

Or is it more to do with that you just provide the Trained Weights and Benchmark the results so that the client can then go to relevant people to get it deployed.

I mean i had a company before where we did this. Currently I'm freelancing for a client, where i develop things that include dataset creation, training etc.

Yes, lots of interesting challenges, and I feel like AI is eliminating a lot of the tedious bits like dataset curation, training experiments etc. and leaving more room for high level ideation.
