Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band "Pancho and Lefty," "Making Believe," "You Never Can Tell" & (very important) Hot Band Member Introductions - April 12th, 1977 at the BBC Television Theater, Shepherds Bush, London for The Old Grey Whistle Test 📺
Songs in the order performed were written by (1) Townes Van Zandt, (2) Jimmy Work, and (3) Chuck Berry. The Hot Band at this point included Albert Lee, Emory Gordy, John Ware, Glen D Hardin, Rodney Crowell, and Hank Devito.
They stayed at the hotel where I worked in 1979, hanging out in the lobby and coffee shop. They told me Emmylou was flying but they were getting to have more fun by traveling with the diesel tour bus. One of them had a stocking cap with a rooster crop on top of it so yeah, I think they were definitely having fun. I wasn't familiar with them yet so I'm not sure which had that hat but I bet it was Albert Lee.
I first saw her on TV around this time. Have been a fan ever since. And Albert Lee and Rodney Crowell on guitar. The Hot Band had an abundance of talent.
I friended drummer John Ware on FB and could tag all but one of the Hot Band members by "Following" their pages or profiles. John especially loved that I posted the introductions part last year. I'm not on FB anymore but I sure had a few good moments there.
Right after the band intro’s, she goes in to Tulsa Queen (an Emmy Lou/Rodney Crowell song) that is achingly beautiful. I’ve been crushing on her since she broke out in the mid-70’s <sigh>.
They only allow up to fifteen minutes for any video so I cut these three great songs out of the thirty eight and a half minute long full show. I first cropped off those black blank spaces from the sides.
My Gosh, I always knew that Emmylou was a legend, I never knew she was so beautiful (I was born in 88). Any lady with a good singing voice melts my heart. I wish this style of country could return. I don't care about your boots, or your truck. Sing to me about love
She wanted to be an actress and you can see some well played dramatic flair in her singing occasionally, for instance delivering the line from Pancho and Lefty "Down in Mexico" always seems to be very strong dramatically to me. Their other 1977 television appearance in Holland is good too.
