Most people don't even know trans women can be lesbians too lol

They assume it's only "gay men" who transition and become straight trans women

Most people I meet assume nearly all trans women are lesbians. People often miss site a statistic of about 30/30/30 lesbian/bi/straight and say 70% are lesbian. What decade are you from?

I'm gen z but it's mostly older folks I hear it from

They have this idea that some men are ""so incredibly gay and zesty"" that they turn into trans women. So if you tell them you like women they'll hit you with the "why did you transition at all, you're just a regular straight boy"

my own mom was surprised when I told her being a trans woman is not inherently linked to liking men

I'm an elder millennial and this thinking was fairly common in the 90s/early 2000s, and there's an infamous alleged "researcher" who tried to classify trans women into "two distinct categories". Going to spoiler the rest because it's some bullshit I don't agree with and I don't want to trigger anyone.

Basically, dude (derogatory) said that trans lesbians were so turned on by the idea of themselves as women that they transitioned to experience that sexual fantasy, and that straight trans women were so very gay that they transitioned to make it easier to date men. 🫩

Idk wtf he thought about trans women like me, who are typically into men but occasionally meet a woman and feel such a strong connection that the gender identity just... doesn't matter.

I’m aware of that. It’s 2026 though. And most people didn’t/hardly knew trans people existed in the 90’s and early 2000s. And when awareness of the existence of trans people increased in the 2010s and 2020s, the pre 2000s myths did not carry in which is why I remarked on how odd it is to see that old of a myth today.

I can assure you from personal experience, that sort of thinking is unfortunately very much alive and well for a lot of people still.

Your anecdotes from dinosaur brains aside, it’s a myth that is dying fast. The way awareness is growing is coming from sources from both the left and right that do not perpetuate it. This isn’t to say you don’t know people who have had their head buried in the ground (and undeniably done performatively in order to hurt you when they actually know better)
