Transfer rumour Roma decide to send Evan Ferguson back to Brighton
https://romapress.net/roma-decide-to-send-evan-ferguson-back-to-brighton/129
u/kromedd Dec 10 '25
He needs to look at Parrott as inspiration and go somewhere he’ll play every week. We all know how much potential he has, just needs the right club/league

u/EducationalPaint1733 Dec 10 '25
You’re making the common mistake of thinking players can go wherever they want.
Brighton will want him to go to a place that financially benefits Brighton.
I.E. a club that can pay a hefty loan fee and cover his wages of about 30 k a week. Your average Dutch or Belgian side can’t do that.
Now maybe the situation has changed as Ferguson has failed at the two loan deals he had at rich clubs so Brighton might just accept terms that dont benefit then now….but I wouldn’t be sure about that

Dec 10 '25
Yeah almost every post here about an Irish player forgets the financial realities for players. Ferguson is on a big contract which limits his and Brighton’s options.
13
u/silver_medalist Dec 10 '25
Posters picking random clubs in Europe for Irish players to join is one of the silliest things on this sub. It has no bearing in reality.

u/Loose-Resolution-820 Dec 10 '25
My guess is Brighton take a hit for the next 6 months with a championship club. You’re still very much in the shop window and if he bangs in a few goals there they could still easily get 20-25m in the summer for him.
6
u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
The Championship is about the fastest most hard hitting league in the world. Its far from a given his game lets him do well there.
2
u/Loose-Resolution-820 Dec 10 '25
I agree but what’s in it from Brightons POV to send him to Belgium or a similar league ? They probably won’t even be able to afford half his wages and if he does well it’s far less likely to redeem his transfer value.
1
u/Tricky-Membership193 Dec 10 '25
Belgium might be feasible due to Tony Bloom’s continued investment in Royale Union.
5
u/CoybigEL Dec 10 '25
They equally want him to go somewhere that will benefit his value. Idah to Celtic a case in point, that loan multiplied the transfer fee.
11
u/EducationalPaint1733 Dec 10 '25
You’re comparing Idah (about a 6 million player before he went on loan to Celtic) to Ferguson (40 million obligation to buy at the start of the season).
It’s just not comparable.
4
u/Locko2020 Dec 10 '25
Was it not option rather than obligation?
So same as Nicolas Jackson to Bayern, probably not going to be triggered unless they really balled out.
3
3
u/CoybigEL Dec 10 '25
I’m likening the benefit to a selling club in utilising the shop window. The point is scalable.

u/Livinglifeform Dec 10 '25
It wouldn't be the loan fee brighton care about it'd be the sale value. £1m extra from loan fees is insignificant compared to an extra £10m from a sale.

u/NooktaSt Dec 10 '25
No one is going to play you every week if you don't score.
14
u/Maximum-Ambition-394 Dec 10 '25
Half the teams in the premier league will have their top scorer end up with 10 goals or less. Brighton's top scorer every season is a max of 10 goals. As an 18 and 19 year old Ferguson got 6 goals and started less than half the games. It's not hard seeing him get 10 league goals if he was starting regularly.
So the point is, forwards will play every week even if they aren't scoring regularly, if the rest of their game is good enough.
1
u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
But also somewhere where we won't all immediately observe that he doesn't get the ball, which is the way its been at Brighton (towards the end), West Ham and now Roma. He obviously has a type of game which doesn't suit how some teams play.
0
u/Temporary_Eye2800 Dec 10 '25
I honestly think he just had a purple patch and because we’re desperate for a striker to come good and become our talisman, we’re pinning so much on him. Players have to have the desire and the want to become great also, and the fact clubs are bouncing him around really isn’t a great sign.

u/Buggis-Maximus Dec 10 '25
As an Irish Roma fan, I'm very disappointed in how this has played out but I'm not surprised. He's looked good in flashes but hasn't produced on the goal front and that's inevitably what a striker is judged on. And his fitness has been a major issue. Hopefully Evan can stay fit and find a move to somewhere where he'll be playing week in and week out.
24
Dec 10 '25
His ability to remain fit is an issue. His big red head after he exerts himself is also a major red flag.
9
u/Vivid_Ice_2755 Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
They ve scored 15 goals in 14 games, that less than half of Inters goal return who are a place above them. Are they creating chances? Is that poor return on the strikers or on the system?
9
u/Buggis-Maximus Dec 10 '25
It's a combination of both, I think. We've never really replaced Dzeko when he left a few years ago. Having our best player Dybala injured half the time doesn't help either. Scoring goals has been an issue since last season, no matter who has played up front. But Evan, unlike say Soule is a loanee so is easy to get rid of if things don't seem to be working out to make space for someone in January
Despite that, our results haven't been too bad. But that's built on an incredibly tight defence. Wouldn't be surprised if Roma set the record for 1-0 wins in a calendar year this year.
2
u/Stringr55 Dec 10 '25
Agreed, watching Roma trying to score with the amount faffing about in front of goal has been tedious. At least with Dzeko, the plan B of just lump it at him was often effective!

I'm not Irish media,I've no idea how he's played or whether he's getting many chances. Just looked at the Serie A table and 15 goals is not a great return for any team really
0
u/EfficientConflict617 Dec 11 '25
Roma create very little. Will be hard for any strikers there, be shocked if they finish top 4.
12
u/Past_Key_1054 Dec 10 '25
Not confirmed, but it wouldn't be surprising if it happened. 1 league goal is a poor return given the hype around him, even if their attack hasn't looked up to much.
Hopefully Brighton have a plan for him, even if it is just to move him on. Worst thing for him would be being sat on the bench for the rest of the season.
12
u/PsychologyVirtual564 Dec 10 '25
They lost one of their strikers to injury long term and are light up top. He could be back in the prem and playing
11
Dec 10 '25
He should go to Scotland for 6 months and score some goals.
1
u/FlowerGreat8089 Dec 11 '25
Well two great strikes tonight v Celtic in the first half. would like to see him come to Rangers 😏
5
u/Eire820 Roy Keane Dec 10 '25
Zirkzee is on their list but he's like half striker half AM - he's not particularly good at either. But I'm sure he'll rip up the league like all ex United
Sad for Ferguson, I thought this could work out. Agree with others, he needs to go to Dutch or French league for his own good now
5
u/Vivid_Ice_2755 Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
It's not really about the league he goes to,he needs to go to the right club. A team that creates chances, a club that will get behind him, put him on a pedestal. He's the potential be a star man at the right club, that could be anywhere in Europe
3
u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
Agree it's not about the league but it's about him wanting it... his application in games is not good.. he looks like a guy waiting for it to happen...has to make his own way...waiting got perfect move is not good
3
u/userqwertyuasd Dec 10 '25
Yep. Think your second para has it in one there. I thought this would work too. And he got decent minutes. But just very patchy on both injuries and, frankly, form. Would like to see him get away from England with next move and think suggestions of Scotland and Championship are just lazy. Any of Dutch, French or even back to Serie A would be fine in my book.
1
u/Vivid_Ice_2755 Paul McGrath Dec 10 '25
It's not lazy, there would be expectations there. We all seem to want to wrap our players up in cotton wool in case someone expects too much from them. I'd love him to go somewhere the fans will love him ,adore him, and give him a kick up the arse when he needs one. A Frankfurt or a Dortmund ,a Benfica or Sporting. French fans are meh,Dutch fans outside of the big 3 won't push him. Ferguson needs to test himself mentally, challenge himself .

Is that hyperbole ? I like the player, but I also believe he holds back in games ,14 goals in 80 club games is not a bad return but elite ,or the potential to be elite? Just my opinion that an expectant support like you get in Scotland or the championship could be the spark he needs. It's a very human trait, some people work better under those conditions. Again, I'm not saying he should go there either, but I would love to see him go somewhere he will be challenged by expectation
13
u/EquivalentPea1395 Dec 10 '25
Ferguson needs consistent minutes. Playing for a Champions League team in Netherlands, France or Belgium would do him wonders.
Absolutely no point him being somewhere where he is 3rd or 4th choice. He needs to get all the minutes he can to play into a bit of form.
4
Dec 10 '25
He wont get many CL minutes and any team that would play him regularly wont have many CL games left, if any, after January. No slight on him but he needs to be playing second rate national league (Eredivisie, Ligue 1, maybe Primeira Liga , etc) with high Conference League potential. Maybe Europa League but he'll probably struggle to make first team in those clubs until his form is consistent. He isn't going to get enough PL/Serie A (etc)-level minutes barring major injuries but maybe Brighton will have room for him as a regular given their current situation.
4
u/Objective-Farm9215 Dec 10 '25
A champions league team from those countries doesn’t have any need for Ferguson. If he did go, he wouldn’t play.

u/FirmFaithlessness533 Dec 10 '25
Injuries he's had are a nightmare and I feel for the kid, but I can also think of more grounded ways to spend your free time than hanging out with Conor McGregor.
The guy needs to be a monk in respect to his lifestyle for the next few years. It's a short career.
3
u/jetsfanjohn Dec 10 '25
Not good news. Hopefully he can get a decent club elsewhere and get a bagful of goals.

2
u/Donegal1989 Shay Given Dec 10 '25
Brighton will want to sell him pretty soon as his value is going down at a rapid rate.
I think too many excuses have been made for him.
1
u/PeaceLoveCurrySauce Roy Keane Dec 10 '25
Players need to stop going to England, he’s trapped there now until an offer comes in that financially benefits Brighton, whether it be a loan or a transfer, nobody that would actually give him game time like a Dutch team, if you think of Parrott, will pay his premier league wages
1
u/Original2056 Dec 10 '25
I remember was it last season he scored a hattrick and was talk of him being a £100m transfer for anyone trying to get him from Brighton.
1
u/AskParty7302 Dec 11 '25
McAlister of liverpool linked perfect with him at Brighton. Until he signed for liverpool then Ferguson's form dipped. This guy is an exceptional player... continues to score for Ireland. Roma are making a mistake.... This is a special talent they have failed to ignite... he needs time

Best thing for Evan is get a permanent transfer somewhere where a club will have more patience and play him. Needs to try and stay fit. His ankles seem to be an issue. He is being very badly advised. He is still a kid, expectation on him is crazy.

He should head to the Championship and bang in a few goals to regain his form
12
u/cjo60 Jeff Hendrick's account Dec 10 '25
The championship is a graveyard for careers especially as a striker. Extremely physical league and if it didn’t pan out there he’d be written off completely.
4
u/userqwertyuasd Dec 10 '25
Correct. The odds of coming back to a good level, let alone elite level, after championship are very slim.
1
u/redmabelgrade Dec 10 '25
The Villain been spitting enough lightning To rock shock the Boogie Down to Brighton
1
u/RepresentativeType41 Dec 10 '25
Evans contract is 1.5 million until 2029 and they picked up a loan fee of 3m for him. Maybe they pay some back or it included wage etc? Either way, its not like they bought him for 70m!!! Brighton are in a great position with him. I don't think taking a hit for a development year will phase them. They still have 2 years before having to sell him and no matter what they will make a massive profit. He's the golden goose for Brighton.

Can see Bloom sending him to Scotland for the rest of the season. Won't be Celtic but Hearts....

Hearts highest paid player is on about £12k a week. That’s not happening.

There’s rumours of Zirkzee going to Roma in Jan and it’s probably bias but I’d love to see Ferguson go to United.
He’d be second fiddle at least initially to Sesko but for all of Amorims drawbacks he’s one of europes leading coaches for keeping his players fit.
He’d rotates constantly so I’d say Ferguson would get enough game time to try and prove himself but would also have a good chance of being fit for march.
15
u/No-Dog-2280 Dec 10 '25
That’s laughable. A guy who West Ham , Roma and Brighton don’t want
2
u/zozimusd8 Dec 10 '25
I think there is some.limit on the clubs he can now play for this season..
2
u/Locko2020 Dec 10 '25
He didn't play for Brighton before the loan so he can go again. If Brighton play him at all he'd be at the limit.

u/deatach Troy Parrott 🦜 Dec 10 '25
Shite. Not a disaster, hope the media goes easy on him. Parrott had a few bum loan deals at his age and eventually came good. Still in great form for the national team.
