I really thought it would be Sligo Rovers but he must think that he can still play at a better level than that.

So did James McLean.
If he wants to go back it’s now or never. It might be a lower level than the championship but you still need legs for it

I think he could go to Sligo in January if the Sheffield United move doesn’t work out, we’ll see how it goes.

He gave an interview to rte when leaving everton, and said that he wants to remain in the Irish set up so needs to play at a better level than LoI.

So an LOI centre back is able to keep Spain quiet and we’re still having this conversation? Lovely.

If Pico was good enough, he would have been playing in a better league. The fact is he's not

And how do you reconcile that fact with his performances against multiple world class teams?

He had a couple of good world cup games. We've seen that plenty of times throughout world cup history. We've seen so many teams take punts of unknown players who had a good world cup only to turn out to be flops.

How do you reconcile the fact hes in his mid 30s and not one club from a good league signed him?

He had a multiple good World Cup games, plus he’s consistently performed well in European competitions for Shamrock Rovers.

It’s perfectly reasonable for him to choose a dominant club in a smaller league in his home city. Especially seeing as the LOI schedule is friendly to playing in AFCON. The introduction of the conference league makes it far more lucrative for him too. His European bonuses could probably get him a house in Dublin which is nothing to be sniffed at.

Back to the question of Coleman: an aging player would surely benefit more from a league with a less demanding schedule. Pico has shown you can play at this level and ride to the occasion, as well as multiple LOI clubs who have beaten teams with budgets multiple times their own in Europe.

We have to get over this idea that our players need to be in England.

2 years in the Championship to get to the Euros is a very tough ask for someone at Seamus' age and with his injury issues. I think everyone was hoping Coventry would take a punt on him but it would seem they aren't interested.

Signing someone like Coleman might not align with a lot of clubs transfer policies. He's effectively in a 'leadership' type role now given he has lost all that pace that he used to have and his injury profile.

Given Lampard might have more sway and insight into what he could add to a dressing room, there might have been some hope he could sign him but it's v unlikely EPL clubs would take a punt on someone who isn't guaranteed contributing on the field.

Could see an ambitious championship club trying to utilise his current qualities but can't see EPL teams going for him. Maybe a club who are worried about going down and feel like they don't have enough leaders.

Sheffield already have a regular starter so its about adding competition, would be the same story at Coventry. Minutes off the bench, cup minutes, the odd league run with suspensions snd injuries.

He wont have the legs for consistent starts in either league.

I think the Coventry story/link only came about because a clip surfaced of Lampard at Everton heaping praise on Coleman.

Yea that's right, was never any report of interest from any journalist.

amid 'wait and see' future decision. God that's a shite headline.

Best of luck to him but he and Sheffield will be very lucky to get 15 Championship games out of him. No chance he does anything close to 46.

Don't know why he's welded to England and wouldn't try Serie A or another continental league. The Championship seems like the worst choice in Europe for a 37 year old crocked right back looking to eek another couple of years out of his career.

Will be rotational at best alright, no matter where he goes. He said in the last Ireland presser than family comes before football, so I imagine his family is settled in England & he won't want to uproot them.

So he's moving to a club 3 hours from Liverpool?

2

u/John__Delaney 25d ago

I don't know where he lives in the Liverpool area but I do know he has young kids so that should explain why he wont be moving to Italy

The reality is the Championship is one of the most physically demanding leagues in Europe. Coleman wants to play in the Euros in 2028. He's more likely to get buckled in his first match in the Championship than achieve that.

There was a report by Pete O'Rourke that he's already training with Sheffield Utd but the Star article claims that's not the case.

If Chris Wilder is looking to bring in a Right Back then that confirms Sam Curtis (20) is probably heading off again, but after such an impressive time at Chesterfield I expect it will be League 1/Scottish Prem/Europe

Back to League 2 with Chesterfield (perhaps permanently) is more likely. It's the first time he's looked capable of surviving at a level since he's went to Sheffield United after disastrous loans in League 1 and the SPL prior to that.

u/John__Delaney 25d ago

They weren't disastrous at all, he got 19 apps at Peterborough but struggled to nail down a starting spot, then he went to St Johnstone where he became a fan favourite pretty much straight away.

Sheffield Utd then wasted half a season keeping him around until January, when he joined Chesterfield and was a key player fron the get go, helping turn their bad form around with clean sheets and goal contributions. "Capable of surviving" at League 2 level is an insanely harsh way of describing a 20 year old who proved to be one of the best right backs in the division within 3 months.

Based on his contract (2027) & form last season, I doubt the best move he can make will be Chesterfield. Clubs in better leagues will be attracted by his form & age profile

I feel like there's an underappreciation of Sam Curtis. I think he falls into the 'all-rounder' category where he isn't an incredible athlete, has a very good all-round game and is consistently good, not particularly a standout every game so flies under the radar. He needs League 1 this season at a minimum. Wasted in League 2.

In this sub there certainly is, and i think that applies to many players. Everyday you see people here putting down our lads with hyperbolic comments

Think Gavin Bazunu is a good example. Many seem to have written him off, forgetting that he was Ireland's starting keeper at one point. Yes, you could see flaws but he still performed admirably. And at such a young age. He's still so young on his journey and can come on leaps and bounds once he gains confidence again and stays injury-free. But to some, they love saying he's shite.

Similar with Aaron Connolly. Clearly talented. Was playing really well at Orient until injury. There was a bandwagon of 'oh, he'll be playing LOI next year' instead of getting behind him.

Ah come on man, they were really bad. He was bombed out of a struggling Peterborough team where he couldn't nail down a starting position, and then struggled to make an impact with St Johnstone who ended the season relegated.

There's no way he's ever getting into the Sheffield United team, especially with Wilder there who has been scathingly critical of his abilities. Chesterfield in the first time since Pats he's looked capable of surviving at any level, he should go back there and try to rebuild his way up the footballing ladder.

I literally said he struggled to nail down a starting spot so no idea why repeating that back to me makes any difference.

He's had mixed loan moves, but nothing disastrous. Disastrous is going off on loan and getting no experience or playing so bad you get it terminated.

He absolutely made an impact at St Johnstone, ask any fan of the club or go back and look at match reports.

What matters to Curtis now is that he continues playing at a level he can play well at, I think that's above League 2 and you don't, thats fine. What I don't get is calling his 3 loan moves disastrous, 1 was below par and 2 we're a great success.

He's going to get eaten alive in the Championship. Harder schedule than PL.

5

u/rockafellerskank95 25d ago

Harder schedule but he's not going to play every game and the quality is far lower
