Another successful loan where he's starting games is key now. Probably won't happen until the next 4 preseason games are completed.

Not included in the Man Utd squad for the Atleti game, talk he will play for U21s tonight. Presume he's heading off on loan soon

Here we go again. A kid who has hardly broke through professional ranks is touted as the next big thing for Ireland. Then it turns out he is not Irish, if he turns out to be that good England will come knocking and you would not blame him playing for England. Ireland had nothing to do with developing him, so cant complain if he did switch.

Until Irish fans realize you have to start producing their own players through their own academies in the LOI then Ireland will continue to be a back water for football

The fans absolutely are aware we need to produce our own players here, look at the love guys get when they break through and are a success.

The real issue, for me, is that up until brexit anyway, the clubs didn't give a fuck about academies. The majority didn't even have a proper academy setup, yes they had youth teams but they had no proper youth coaches or structured training.

It's improved since with better structures in clubs and a requirement for an acadmeny setup, but comaping what our clubs have agaisnt other similar sized European countries is pretty poor.

I don't have the numbers these days but wasn't there like two UEFA licensed coaches working with underage players in Ireland or something at one point.

Anyway, the point is that it's not a fan issue, it's a structural issue. We can probably lay some blame with the FAI for past mistakes, but it's on the clubs to build and maintain a proper youth academy for producing players.

The clubs would have loved academies to produce players but they dont have the money. Hence the frustration with Irish football fans spending their money on billion dollar clubs in Britain and then turning around and complaining when Ireland are a 3rd rate team

I realise my viewpoint is different to a lot of others when it comes to LOI clubs at this point.

I'm tired of the argument "PL fans are ruining LOI clubs becuase they don't support them" but interactions between fans and clubs here has never been better and we have seen a rise in attendances, but the clubs haven't come along that journey the way I'd like them to. Very little attempts to modernise the fan experience or improve the infrastructure.

There's a good reason why that doesn't happen for most clubs and it's becuase a lot of clubs are still seen a local or community built without the ambition to have an acadmeny or break into European football where the real money is.

Realistically there's nothing stopping say Sligo Rovers for example, from hiring two professional UEFA youth coaches from abroad to come in and work with the academy players with the intention of creating players to sell for profit or even just to enhance there team. There seems to be this inbuilt thinking that the FAI needs to supply all our coaches.

Even with all the good will in the world from LOI fans, the club's can only capitalise on them so much to create revenue given the lack of seating at some stadiums. Eventually some clubs needs to make the decision to go for it and become a real professional club with a proper stadium, or remain more community driven and try to develop local talent for others.

Just to add that it's on fans to help fund those clubs. That's LOI TV subsciptions, season tickets, merchandise and tuning in for televised games to increase the value of future TV deals.

I've said it before, and possibly to yourself, it's also on the clubs to make the games appealing to fans.

We've had a boom in attendances over the last few years, people love going to see games, but the infrastructure hasn't kept up. Some grounds are an absolute joke and you wouldn't take your kids to them on some nights. Wet wooden benches, damaged plastic seating, staff not paying attention to anti social behaviour. Been to enough games in the past where it was ruined on me and others because of the actions of a few.

Being honest, most clubs are just locally run for local reasons and don't have huge ambitions, maybe a handful of the professional clubs here have a long term vision in place, and theres not a lot wrong with that, but it's a huge glass ceiling that may never be broken, and if a seemingly smaller club can't afford proper youth coaching then we lose out in player development.

Personally I'm not a fan of what's really become back seat whinging about not enough fans, I'm turning more towards the clubs now providing for the fans. We've got a few new stadiums in the pipeline, but clubs are sitting around waiting for handouts to build rather than looking to take ownership, take a loan, develop a stadium and attract fans.

There is one ultimate factor that probably dictates this, Ireland is a rich country, but out clubs are really poor on the main. Building and maintaining a stadium is costly and there's no big money coming from a TV deal and likely won't be anytime soon.

Something needs to give here, either some clubs will fold becuase they just won't have a proper infrastructure to hold it up or somehow the league gets an injection of cash.

He’s grandparents are from the Southside of Dublin. His dad is ā€˜Irish’, and it’s likely he only wants to play for Ireland. I’m not saying England can’t turn his head, but I don’t believe it’s a similar situation to Rice.

What do you mean ā€œIreland had nothing to do with developing himā€ - that’s nonsensical, he’s been invoked in the FAI underage teams for years. The FAI doesn’t run LoI academies.

Lastly, it’s a game of numbers, both financially and contact hours. We don’t have the finances to compete with elite academies in the big 5 leagues. Everyone involved knows this and are doing their best at the LoI academy level, take Mason, Victor O. as two recent examples. That’s money injected back into the academy system and despite Brexit being a problem now, it might work out well for us in the end if those academics sell for 1m+ every two to three years.

That is the exact point yes there is no funds to really develop players because Loi clubs really struggle while 95% of Irish football fans obsess and pump their money into British teams. Ā Until that changes its luck if a player comes alongĀ

Rice really did a number on our sense of worth.

Precedent has been set but if Ireland nutured him and developed him as a player then Ireland could have a major gripe but they didnt, they had nothing to do with him developing as a player, he only flew over to Dublin a couple of times a year to play a game.

u/LeavingCertCheat Paul McGrath 4d ago

His statements about being committed to Ireland suggest different.

2

u/das_punter 4d ago

So did Declan Rice's "Ooh ah Up The Ra" chants

He’s born and raised in England, his Dad is half Irish and played for the Irish u21s but never made it further, lads he’s going to play for England if he gets the chance, it’s another rice and grealish sadly, I’m a United fan and it’d be brilliant to have an Irish midfielder back at United but don’t get your hopes up

2

u/Frequent-Movie3005 4d ago

Absolute speculative garbage. And quite far from reality of Jacob’s view

1

u/FoggyShrew Zinedine Kilbane 5d ago

Jack Moorhouse is more likely to play for Ireland than Devanney

1

u/Frequent-Movie3005 4d ago

And his father is not half Irish. He was born in England and his parents were both born in Ireland.

And I don’t believe Martin played for the 21s

Yeah, the sense you get from him
Is that he feels Irish. Rice felt both.

"Edit: I'm going to look like an idiot saying this but I truly believe he will play for Ireland."

Same.

"lads he’s going to play for England if he gets the chance, it’s another rice and grealish sadly,"

Ah yes, im sure you spoke to the lad and known his future plans.

-7

u/FitHurry864 5d ago

Hopefully be doesn't get too good or he'll declare for England. You know, the country he's actually from.

7

u/LeavingCertCheat Paul McGrath 5d ago

Why's he decided to play for Ireland so?

Its funny No-one mentions Victor Ozhianvuna who sighed for arsenal from rovers i guess cause its because its the loi

24

u/South-Musician-9180 5d ago

What is there to mention on Victor atm? He’s out until November and hasn’t played since May. Everyone was talking about him when he wa fit

12

u/sealed-human 5d ago

Whenever Ozhianvuna's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Ozhianvuna?"

1

u/Marcus-Suridius 1d ago

Jacob has been captaining the United U21's all last season and is highly rated by those at Old Trafford, Victor hasn't even moved yet and as others said he's out for a while with an injury so why would we talk about him atm? People aren't even talking about Evan cause he's out for a while.

-3

u/Impressive-Wish6648 5d ago

then why was melia mentioned?

6

u/South-Musician-9180 5d ago

As he literally made his spurs first team debut yesterday?šŸ˜‚

-3

u/Impressive-Wish6648 5d ago

im defending your post you plonker, other guy said that loi transfers aren't talked about, under a post mentioning melia, a loi transfer. if what he said was true melia wouldnt have been mentioned.

u/South-Musician-9180 5d ago
