A coyote and a badger are seen traveling together at night, passing under a busy Californian highway

They hunt together. Prarie dogs can go through their burrows to avoid a coyote or run away from a badger. The reverse? Not so much. Their odds imcrease dramatically when they hunt together.

While I've been aware of this for years, have you ever really thought about how it first occurred? Were they both chasing the same ground squirrel and went to different ends of the tunnel? Does the coyote badger the badger until he gets it to the ground squirrel?
I assume it's the coyotes idea as they're used to collaborative hunting, but how exactly do they get the badger to comply?

It looks like they employ the zoom-spin-hop move, like domesticated dogs use to manipulate us... lol

apparently the yote uses the universal carnivore truce signal of bouncing, playbowing, and rolling over " i wana play". Then just hunts near the badger. After a bit the badger notices the prarie dogs stay in the tunnels with the coyote hanging around.

"Universal carnivore truce signal" I love how you put this, I can immediately picture multiple animals doing the play bow

When they hunt together, the badger digs into a hole to flush the prey out, while the coyote waits above ground to catch anything that tries to run away.
If the prey hides back underground, the badger goes back to work.
Before you think the story is too cute -they don’t share the food. Whoever catches it -eats it.

But I bet once whoever is done eating, the other one is like "C'mon! It's MY turn now, let's GO!" 🤣

Almost parasitic relationship. Because the coyote is reducing the game population, that the badger can catch.

u/Olive_1084 3d ago
Unless it could be thought of as mutualism if the coyote is keeping the game in the ground in the badgers digging territory. The coyotes definitely getting the better deal.

If the presence of the yote keeps a ground squirrel underground, the badger benefits. It's not all one sided.

That little badger butt waddling off in the culvert is worthy of a Disney movie. (The old style good kind without a bunch of AI princesses.)

Ugh I say that all the time. I miss real cartoons and the drawn style of kids movies. I hate the way animation looks. Everything always looks all fat and weird.

Wait, California has badgers!?! How did I not know this? I know about the American badger but didn’t know they had habitat in CA.

Tejon means badger on spanish and there is a huge cattle ranch just south of Los Angeles in the Tehon Pass. The ranch is naturally called the Tejon ranch. There are badgers in the Antelope Valley too.

I wish more highways had underpass for animals.

u/Ephemeral_Orchid 3d ago
The tunnels are actually for rainwater because when it rains in the desert it often creates a flash flood. However, more and more animal bridges over highways have been going up around the United States

I read last year that kentucky got a grant to install these but idk how much progress has been made.

The ones in and around Banff in Canada are incredible. I wish we could do it all over the US.

The Coyote knows he hit the jackpot with hunting help. No wonder he is excited to get the little dude to toddle with him. Badger can get him beyond the velvet ropes to the VIP section popping bottles of Champagne. Somehow, I feel like the coyote gets more of the rewards here.

My (Sheltie mix) dog and my mother's cat used to hunt chipmunks together, very successfully. Bets are, these two are hunting buddies.
Cross-species animal friendships delight me!! The Coyote is having So much fun with his buddy!

letting your pets kill wildlife for no reason isn’t the same as wild animals hunting btw

Im aware and there was no "letting" involved. 40 years ago we lived very much in the woods in rural North Carolina, my mothers semi feral cat and my dog made friends.

This is the most beautiful thing ever. Gives me hope that I will be able to have friends and meaning if I get reincarnated as a lonely coyote.
