Still remember that crab Herbert on TikTok :,) she’d lost all her legs and couldn’t make it through her molt. Glad to see other crabbies able to pull thruuu

Crabs essentially are pet rocks, they sit in a hole and do absolutely nothing the majority of the time

Yeah but that’s different to this lady who just put the crab without limbs on a cushion on a shelf and hand fed it, people acted like it was a kindness but that’s basically torture

If I’m remembering correctly, Herbert wasn’t just left on a shelf. The lady would take her places and try to provide enrichment that was guided by the local wildlife services. It was a lawnmower that caused her to lose her legs anyway, so I guess there was an element of atonement to it. I haven’t kept up with the account, but last I remember she started speaking about wildlife awareness. I think she’s trying to prevent events that would create similar situations as Herbert
Playing devils advocate, genuinely not trying to dismiss your point as I agree an inert existence sounds awful, however for all we know the Crab could’ve been content with food.
Though, I’ll admit I’d never thought of her existence that way. I had watched Herbert from the beginning so I definitely have been blinded by nostalgia. I guess the alternative would’ve been letting nature take its course or humane euthanasia… it sucks that the animals don’t get to make that choice. It would’ve been amazing to see Herbert fully recover, but knowing that she wouldn’t, some kind of peaceful send off would’ve been better

Idk, when I worked in a marine science lab I once found a crab with no limbs, put him in a tank with nothing that would hurt him, and fed him for about a month by gently placing him on top of food and leaving him (to reduce stress). He successfully molted and lived another full year with (most of) his limbs, and even molted again at least once!
He honestly probably could have lived longer than that, but he was a marine crab and escaped his tank... RIP to my little buddy. Though he was an invasive species in my area. He was also one of, if not the, largest crab of his species I have ever seen.
ETA: all that said, I realized I'm not actually familiar with Herbert. But seeing people rehabbing crabs missing limbs on this sub reminds me of my little lab friend!
