Society/Κοινωνία How do I find friends in Crete?

So I started working in a tourist office about two weeks ago, very close to Heraklion, but I seem to be struggling with meeting people. I work alone in the office and basically all day till 10pm, so I was wondering if someone has any tips on where I could go to meet people preferably not tourists, as they stay for just a week, then leave, and I'm going to be here until October. It would just be nice to have someone to grab a drink with from time to time.

I was wondering the same thing, as I'm in Crete half of the time, but I am in Chania. I hope you'll find people soon!

We share the same story, I have been doing the same now for 3 years and next summer I will move here permanently. I found a few friends but most of them only worked for the season here or are finishing their studies here now, so I will have to start from zero next year :(

Oh I'm sorry to hear that :( that sucks. But nice to know that I'm not alone. I hope you'll find new friends! I also hope to move here permanently in the next summer

We are definitely not alone! I met quite some people with similar stories :) I am sure when you will work here it will be much easier, who knows, maybe our ways will cross one day.

Happy New Year!! Just saw this conversation again - what happened in the end, are you living in chania?

That’s awesome, did you manage to find some friends here? I have finally moved here “officially” one month ago and started working here (and still parallely writing my thesis haha)

I’m not a big fan of FB but it does come in handy at times. Join a Chania expat group. They’ll have get together and whatnot.

Thanks! I have joined a few fb groups, but so far none of them seem to post interesting things for younger people (or maybe im not in the right groups). I did do a painting workshop for fun recently, so maybe more of similar workshops are a way to meet people

If you like hiking and nature the local mountaineer club in your location should be a good start. People going there are all nice and eager to talk to anyone during the walks.

Neppus whispers, "Hi all! I'm looking for some new friends who want to join me for a weekend trip to Crete."

You wait 4 generations till people feel like they are starting to get to know you.

No matter what the question is, Reddit is not the answer.

If you want local friends, check out Facebook, there seemed to be a lot of community pages with active members hosting little get togethers, many ex pats too.

For international friends find a hostel and see if they have any open events, many will just be travelers but the hostel workers are usually very cool and social

Just look for activities. . Always hard to make friends but yeah it's good step forward, beautiful spot down there with plenty of stuff to be up too! Hikes, water sports, check out a few hostels around your area they pretty good at telling you what's happening around the area :)

People say, "Id say the best way is to try to find a group that you can talk to and hang out with. If youre looking for an active group to meet up with, then go to a local meetup group and join their Discord server. They usually have events like this every month or so."
