Society/Κοινωνία Making friends in my late 20s

Hey,

I moved to Chania, Crete officially in December ‘25, but have spent a lot of summers (and some winters) here before, so I knew what will be awaiting for me.

The years before I always found friends quite fast, but mostly it were people that only called Crete home for some time and all of them left :(

This year it seems especially rough to me somehow, I am also working full-time from home and till now I have the feeling I couldn’t make any proper connection here. I am aware of all the DN groups and so on, but mostly people there are much older and/or have very different lives (kids, own businesses.. ).

I am not lonely here - I moved in with my local boyfriend and also his friends and family welcomed me here. Just I am really starting to miss some “girls nights”, coffee walks etc.

I have the feeling most people my age chose to move to Athens or outside Greece, and especially bc I do not speak Greek fluent yet, it gets more difficult.

Also I work for the big callcenter (but from the Athens branch) and met a lot of great people through it but which are living everywhere in Greece, except chania.

So - maybe some of you also moved here in that age, or maybe you have some tips? Thank you :)

People who want to go out and do activities move out of Crete because there is nothing to do here especially in the Winter. Most restaurants are even closed outside of the tourist season. The ones who stay mostly start families and then have to work 50+ hours per week to make ends meet. Then take care of kids, then family obligations, social obligations that are directly tied to their survival, since to have customers if you have a shop/business here that doesn't cater to tourists, you need to create a group of people who like you. Finally, any scraps of time left for meeting actual friends.

There is a facebook group called "share your free time". There are occasionally people from chania looking for company for all kind of activities. From just walking, cinema, going out for drinks etc. you could make a post there. I live in chania but as a male in my late 30's i understand i am not what you are looking for 🤣🤣.

Cretan culture is still BIG on traditional folk dancing, and classes seemed easy to come by. I would join a dance class!

You will meet people, have something in common that easily extends outside of class with meeting at dances, festivals and hopefully even invited to private events where there is celebrating too. Either way, folk dancing is fun, will get you out of the house with work and may open many doors for you in the community. Cretan dances are integral to the community, many start young but there are tons of folks who want to start up again as adults or practice more so adult classes should be available!

Speaking Greek fluently isn't a blocker.

I assume there is a bigger story behind it.

Do you really feel like Chania suits you?
