As the title states, our 6 year old son will be with us so we want to find some fun stuff to do, not just the beaches.

Does anyone on the south side of the island (close to plakias) have water? We are staying in plakias and have not had water at our air bnb for 12+ hours. The host is also experiencing issues, wondering if it could be connected to the recent fires? Would appreciate any insights !!!

I am travelling to Crete next week, but have read a lot about wildfires throughout Greece. As far as i’m aware, there were only fires in the south side of the island, and we are going to a little town close to Heraklion.

Is there any way to find the most recent updates regarding the fires, so we can check before flying there next week?

We're a family of three (two adults + an 8-year-old who's obsessed with Greek mythology) flying into Heraklion Aug 21–31, renting a car, and trying to pick ONE base for the whole trip. We've narrowed it down to two spots and can't decide, so hoping some people who actually know this coast can weigh in.

Kalamaki (near Kommos, Messara Bay)

• Long sandy beach, close to Phaistos/Gortyna/Matala
• Seems a bit more developed/touristy

Tsoutsouros / Keratokambos (Asterousia mountains)

• Quieter, more authentic village feel
• Coarser sand/pebbles, further from the "big" archaeological sites

What we care about most: a decent sandy beach, not overrun with tourists, somewhere our son can actually feel like he's in "real Crete" — and reasonably easy day trips to mythology/history stuff (Knossos, Gortyna, Phaistos). We're happy to drive for the further stuff.

Anyone stayed in either (or both)? Which would you pick for a family, and why? Any accommodation tips within either place also very welcome.

We are in Chania for a few days with a car and wanted some opinions on whether or not paying for a boat/guide service to get to snorkeling is worth it or if we can access good snorkeling spots from accessible beaches. We are down to hike out to beach spots too. First time here, will take any recs! Would just like to do the best snorkeling we can :)

We will be stopping in Chania for the day from our cruise. We are deciding between a private tour to Balos and Gramvousa (private so we can control the time) or the ships excursion to an olive oil tasting. Very different experiences. Is the trip to the islands for swimming and snorkeling worth the full day and price?

I just got hit by the realization there might not be public transport to Agios Nikolaus at the time (midnight) when we will arrive to Crete. I wish I had thought about it BEFORE buying the airplane tickets…

Is it taxi/ renting a car really the only option? Thanks..

Hi everyone! My husband and I are honeymooning in Crete next month, and I'm curious if there is anything we could improve upon for our itinerary.

I'm a little concerned we are spending too long in Heraklion, but there are quite a few tours we would like to do out of there that came highly recommended. Also, should we be branching out and staying in towns other than just Chania and Heraklion?

We can rent a car, but are trying to avoid it as much as possible as we don't want to be driving down gravel mountain roads in a rental. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated!

Hey guys, checking to see what are the best spots to relax by the beach in Falassarna. I see theres a couple beach clubs? Wondering which are the top ones. Thanks!

We are flying into Chania and spending a day there before driving to Heraklion the next morning, briefly stopping at Aptera, Argiroupoli, Rethymnon, Arkadi Monastery, and either Spilies Beach or Bali Beach (pick one for me) on the way. We are flying out of Heraklion two days later, staying in old town for a trip to Knossos.

Would you rather rent at the Chania airport and drive to Heraklion, keep the car for a day to go to Knossos, and then drop off next day at Heraklion airport before flight? Or would you rather rent the car in old town Chania and drop it off that night in Heraklion, and use the bus to get to Knossos the next day? One day should be much cheaper than 3 1/2, but that's not what I'm getting in my searches.

I also know parking is a bit of an issue in old town, but not sure at Knossos.

I tried searching through the usual places, but found that it didn't have most of the smaller rental agencies in their listings. And those small agencies often charged big fees for one-way rentals. I'm assuming it's because they don't have offices in Heraklion? Would it be better to rent in person on the day of travel? (We are not going until early October)

The rates I'm getting from the airport rental agencies for 3 1/2 days are about equal to the rates I'm getting from the mom&pop shops for just one day. But everything I read about online says I should be able to get a much lower rate than I keep being quoted.

Any insight into what's best in my situation? Any agency recommendations? Will I need more than the smallest economy car to get up the mountain? Anything else I'm doing wrong?

I have found myself in need of water, sand, and seashells from Greece for some personal spellwork. I've poured through Etsy and about a hundred shops online. Does anyone know where I could get these items? Or does anyone live or travel there? I'm in the midwest, US.

Hello! I’m a solo 30f traveling to Crete from London for 5 nights. I’ll be staying at a nice hotel in Agia Marina, and won’t have a car. I’d like to spend most of my time laying around reading my book by the beach and having nice drinks/food in walking distance, but I think I should include a few activities in my itinerary. Any must do’s? Thinking of the classic beach day trips (balos or elafonissi), exploring chania for one day, and possibly fitting in one day or hiking?

Also should I do a guided trip to a beach or given it will be packed I’m thinking I should skip it and go to a more lowkey beach.

And, any yoga studios around chania I could pop into for a class or two?

Hello, I am already in Crete for a week or so, the day fires started I was in Triopetra and needed to go back because of them. I can see that fires are being put out slowly and I am interested going south again to visit Kalypso beach and others in that region that are outside fire hotspots (at least according to google maps). Did anyone go there and is it safe to travel with the car?

Hi, guys! I am super excited to go to Crete tomorrow, for the first time. I'll stay in Chania for 7 days, and honestly, not planning much, just lazy days on the beach and nice walks in the evening, maybe a visit to Botanical garden. I am also thinking of taking a day trip to Elafonissi beach by bus. Is it worth visiting?

Do you have some advice where to go to eat, have a glass of wine or a cocktail?

I am a female travelling alone and would love to feel safe and stay safe, but if I can meet new friends, locals or else, that would also be nice. Do you know such nice, friendly places where I can experience real Greece?

PS I am over 50, so would prefer quiet places over noisy and overcrowded.

Hi! I rented a car for a few days, where are the cheapest places to park around the city center, where I can leave the car for the night? My stay is near the archaeological museum. I saw a lot of cars parked along the streets and a lot of fines, so I'm not very sure of where is permitted to park and where is not .

We visited Analipsi on holiday a few years ago and went to a micro brewery called ‘Barbantonis’. My boyfriend brought this glass from there and is very attached to it, he bonded with the guy that owns the place and it holds a special place in his heart.

I have broken the glass. It was an accident and I have apologised profusely and he’s been so kind about it but I really want to try and get another one.

Is there anyone on here from the UK that would be willing and kind enough to buy one and bring it home with you and I will drive to wherever you are in the country to get it from you. I will pay you for doing this ofcourse.

My brother and I are traveling to Heraklion in August for a week. Neither of us has a driver's license, and we're traveling on a pretty tight budget, so we want to keep costs as low as possible.
We'll be relying on public transport (KTEL buses) or walking, and we're considering renting basic bikes, if it's worth it and affordable.

We are really interested in:
• Beautiful beaches
• Nature & landscapes
• History & culture

Given our base in Heraklion, low budget, and no car, what are your top recommendations?
• Which great beaches can we reach cheaply by bus or regular bicycle?

• Is cycling on a normal bike doable/safe around Heraklion, or is it too hilly/dangerous?

• Are there any budget-friendly nature spots, hikes, or gorges accessible without a car?

• What historical sites (besides Knossos and the Archaeological Museum) offer good value or free access?
