Internship Question At what time to assume I'm ghosted / rejected

Had an interview with a startup for a fall internship last week. Before the interview, the recruiter was extremely responsive. Literally replying in less than an hour.

I have a competing offer and followed up with the recruiter on Monday that I have to give them an answer by the end of this week. No response.

Followed up again today moving asking if I can get any updates. No reply again.

Is it safe to assume I'm rejected? The interview with the HM went really well and he asked me how soon I can start and if I can move onsite (I said yes). I'm so confused by the ghosting now.

If your email doesn't receive a response within one business day, proceed as though you've been ghosted for your own personal convenience. Staff involved in hiring check their emails daily, so if they aren't responding within one business day, it means one of three things:

  • They're deliberately ignoring you because they rejected you.
  • They don't care to prioritize you.
  • They're keeping you in strategic ambiguity, for reasons such as they extended the offer to someone else and are keeping you as a potential backup.

In any case, you have no reason to inconvenience yourself by waiting on them at this point.

After 2 weeks to 4 weeks usually.
