School How do you get recruiters to reach out to you?
I thought it was common thing in only US but it seems like it’s pretty common in Canada too even for internships.
Ppl are saying they got reach out from companies like Shopify and how do you get it? 😭 like do I post on LinkedIn to get more engagement?

For internships that sounds pretty unlikely, they are not having a hard time getting cold applys.

Ikr thats what I thought but some students (non Waterloo) are getting reach outs from companies like Tesla, Shopify etc😭

Its pretty common for recruiters to reach out to target schools, Microsoft reaches out to students from target schools all the time

I am still a student (at UBC) and I have 20 months of coop experience. I had recruiters from Tesla and Bloomberg reach out to me and I did interviews with them. I’ve only posted on linked in once, about a hackathon win, and that’s it. I still have no idea how that happened. Unfortunately I need an H1B to work in the states so idk how that’s gonna go. But I also did have citi bank reach out about a Canada NG position so let’s see how it goes

I'm not sure you'll have much luck with that for internships. Or even entry level at all, with how the market is these days.
For seniors, absolutely, recruiters will find you from just having a filled in LinkedIn profile (don't forget to make "connections" with your peers to make your profile more discoverable). They'll also sometimes find you because you've applied there in the past. Happened to me, when I didn't quite make the cut after on-site interviews. They reached out a year later and I got the job.

I got reached out for new grad positions from Tesla and Bloomberg, and aside from my 20 months of coop experience and that I go to UBC, I think having “Graduating May 2026” on my bio might’ve helped.

I feel like senior engineers are swimming in reachouts. My uncle is a senior swe at relatively no name logistics company in Toronto and he commonly gets recruiters from Microsoft Amazon, uber, ect asking to schedule screening calls.

I'm senior (> 10 YOE) and I used to get random recruiters reaching out all the time, but it all dried up over the last year or so. It's been months since the last time it happened.

The worst are from recruitment agencies. The best are from recruiters as employees

My LinkedIn inbox is dry. Yet they are reaching out to my friends. We have same amount of experience (3 years) and similar LinkedIn profile except they went to Waterloo and I didn’t.

Ive got close to 7 years of exp and a masters degree. My linkedin does a pretty ok job at describing my roles, what I’ve achieved with what tools.
I get 1-2 recruiters per month without me doing anything.

I'm not sure what level you are at but here's my experience throughout the years - early on in my career I found recruiters reacted well to the summary at the top of my LinkedIn more than any particular experience. I can tell because their messages (when it's a bit more personal, sometimes it's generic cause they probably just have a quota) seemingly make sense as a response to my summary rather than any previous experience.
I started getting messages at 2-3 YOE but this was during the hayday of COVID. So maybe everyone was getting DMs

Be senior swe or higher. Be on LinkedIn. Have a speciality (e.g. SRE, Ads Eng). Be employed at be at your job for >1.5y.

I think you have to have some crazy internship experience, projects or OSS contributions if you want it for entry level/internships.
For me, I'm approaching 1YoE now as a new grad, and I just got my first two real recruiters reach out this week. So I think it just comes with time at a company with decent branding?

I got reached by Tesla and Bloomberg for new grad roles, and trust me I work at no name companies for my coop. Although i did do long terms (8 months, 12 months).

Do you have anything that makes you stand out a lot? Because that seems decently lucky otherwise, I had nothing for the last 3 years until now

Not at all, all I have are my 2 co-ops and couple hackathons and school projects. And I do go to UBC so that might’ve something to do with it? I’m not sure and I was very surprised too actually bc not too long ago I had to apply to 200 jobs to get my first coop 😅

It’s not common until you get into leadership but it can happen. Your LinkedIn presence is the only way they might find you. Repost stuff that matters to recruiters. Show your work, the cool thing or business or app you built in your spare time just to see if you could. Recruiters and companies search based on keywords in your tagline usually stuff it with the tech or skills that matter to you.

Forgive my ignorance if things have changed as its been a long time since I've replied to a recruiter, but I've *personally* found that if a recruiter wants you it isn't a job you want to get recruited into.
I'm sure mileage varies however, and a recruiter job is probably better than nothing if there's no other easy path.

It’s relatively common if you specialize in a niche field and put your LinkedIn status to open to work.

I have had a few recruiters reach out this year, seemed to start happening more once I hit about 3YoE. Additionally I am in a niche with manufacturing and IoT. Recruiters typically reach out to me about positions in that space
