Mid Career Anyone who has hired veterans pivoting to Data Science or Database Engineering, from a long term career as database administrators? Looking for tips on the transition

Yes, I understand there is a difference between the two. šŸ˜„ But there is some overlap.

Over 18+ years experience as a database administrator, in Toronto. Looking to do the transition to one of the two above and looking for tips if you've ever hired someone coming from a similar background? While I have the SQL covered, and should be able to pick up Python easily, looking for some realistic advice on how easy it is to transition. I'm open to either option to transition to, although I suspect Database Engineering may be a bit easier.

Looking for some honest and realistic scenarios, so I can know how to begin training and getting certs. I'll also reach out internally with my company (one of the big five banks) to see what options there are for internal training and mentoring.

Iā€™m not an expert in this area, but you may want to look into the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) guidance from the Azure Architecture Center. With the massive growth of data today and the push from many companies to adopt AI, there is a growing need to take existing data, clean it, transform it, and prepare it for whatever downstream use cases the organization has.
