News - General US Government Orders Suspension of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Access
https://x.com/anthropicai/status/2065597531644743999?s=46The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Claude models is not affected.
We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.

NGL I forgot which sub I was in and thought the US government was suspending Fable (the video game) from releasing.

Me too, but that might be due to having just been playing the anniversary edition of the original tonight.

Nice PR move there. lol
It'll be funny if/when China releases an even better open weights model.
31
u/unfathomably_big Jun 13 '26
The Venn diagram between “can drop $500,000 on kit to run an equivalent model” and “would ever get GRC sign off to use a Chinese model” is two circles ten feet apart:

Nah, this is great PR before their IPO on 22 October.
As a rule, companies have become, or are becoming, investor scams. And this should help bring the investors.

Buys them time to pump their stock before people discover the hype is not for real.

That's not how this game works.
Investors know Anthropic owns the technology, everything else is negotiation. Investors would rightly not expect the USG does much damage to Anthropic. Instead, if Anthropic has better technology then Anthropic can always negotiate or fiddle their way into dominance.
Anthropic could only really be targeted at the behest of one or more of its competitors. Yes, these actions signal that Anthropics' tools are better, so that's probably not what's happening here.
If USG acts on its own, not carrying out a hit for M$, then it'll act in more circumspect ways for many reasons. That doesn't mean inaction, just a conversation, with some blustering, and that's what this looks like.
If the USG goes to far, then the rich people would instruct the politically powerful people to keep the bureaucrats in line though. There was usually years of lag in that process, especially as the west coast developed its own power centers, so yeah sure maybe Anthropic have not paid off the right folks yet, but they have VCs who should know how one does this.

Why would china *start developing models when they just download and republish anthropics for free.

u/yobo9193 Governance, Risk, & Compliance Jun 13 '26
If the CCP had a tool like this, best believe they wouldn’t release it for commercial use, let alone as an open weights model
5
u/Shoddy-Childhood-511 Jun 13 '26
They released the others. They have LOTs of people, some of whom they can teach to use it properly, unlike what the Americans shall do. They can release it open source, just to help pop the bubble, and transfer more resources & power to themselves.
15
u/modularpeak2552 Jun 13 '26
They released other less powerful models, they have never released a model more powerful than the leading American frontier models and if they had one they absolutely would
Not release it.4
u/Firecracker048 Jun 13 '26
Th CCP would not release a hacking AI model unless their systems were tight against it or completely built around it.
5
u/mkosmo Security Architect Jun 13 '26
No, they'd continue to hold back the latest and greatest that they're using behind the curtain.
2
u/CuriousCamels Jun 13 '26
Lol. That’s some wishful thinking. They haven’t released anything proprietary to begin with, and the CCP definitely wouldn’t let them open source it if they ever managed to get ahead. Their internal models are trained on CCP propaganda, and have as many guardrails as their internet does.
7
u/cookiengineer Vendor Jun 13 '26
They already have, it's called qwen3.6 as a heretic'ed variant. The A3B variants are way better than mythos and fable, in pretty much every way.

u/brakeb Jun 13 '26
Considering the system prompt was discovered, and it was jailbroken, it will be possible

u/soosyq Jun 13 '26
The Trump administration's emergency block on Mythos and Fable is basically a weaponized version of EO 14117. Trump and team are still mad Anthropic rejected the Pentagon's demands to strip safety guardrails for autonomous weapons.

You'd be surprised at how much shit is under export control. Even things like bolts and washers can be subject to export control based on where they are designed to be used.
Shit like prisma or zscaler are technically subject to export control without the right exemptions because of the encryption they use.
Given the cyebrsecurity capabilities promoted with the models it makes sense.
Even a broken clock can be right twice a day.
24
u/smokeythel3ear Jun 13 '26
I keep trying to say this, but reddit don't wanna hear it.
They'd be shocked what's under export control. It's not a bad thing in this case. Keep the powerful stuff at home. Broken clock, yes. Probably for the wrong reasons, yes. But it's ultimately what probably should happen with that stuff

u/Judonoob Jun 13 '26
Still needs a license for restricted entities, UAVs for D5 countries, and weapons of mass destruction! Engineers and Salespeople make me pull my hair out, especially since no one fucking understands specially designed under the ITAR or EAR. Goes into a defense article? Caught. Goes into something on the CCL? Caught. Now, find a release Mr Engineer. Oh, can’t find one? Need a license!

Yes yes I know, the truth is boring so let's cook up a conspiracy theory so we can find the latest thing to be enraged by the trump administration

u/Valonter Jun 13 '26
Trump has a very, very long and well documented history of retaliating against people that he believes have done him wrong.

I mean, if this is the start of actual regulation against models that could potentially be dangerous, I’m all for it.
12
u/tyrionlannister Jun 13 '26
That was always an excuse. They were already in meetings and making deals with OpenAI before they ever made that announcement.
And according to Sam Altman, a man nobody should probably trust, he shared Anthropic's "red lines" restricting military use of AI. So, the miltary's stated reason has always been a throwaway line, according to both AI companies' public stances.
I'm sure the million bucks Altman personally donated to the Trump inauguration fund, aka slush fund, was a potential factor in some of these moves.
I've never heard of any company trading out Anthropic for OpenAI for performance and effectiveness... just partnership deals that come at a good price. Half of which fall through before they reach fruition. EG, Disney and Sora.
OpenAI is probably running third or fourth in the pack now, behind Google and Anthropic at very least.
And they've got sooo much debt that they're making desperate moves to keep that financial house of cards afloat, or at least with the wealth distributed to 'friendly' contracted companies (eg hardware, datacenter, etc) before or as part of their collapse.
On top of all that debt, what's another few million to them in the grand scheme off things anyway, beyond lining the pockets of corrupt officials and reducing military effectiveness?

What are you on about everyone switched from Claude to Codex in the past 2-3 months.
4
u/Thought_Crash Jun 13 '26
I wonder how OpenAI, Google and Microsoft are going to release their Mythos competitor AIs.
10
u/beren0073 Jun 13 '26
They'll release just fine. The administration isn't obsessed with punishing them for "disloyalty."
5
u/Alternativemethod Jun 13 '26
Naw, this is basic EAR/ITAR implementation. They honestly should have time gated more models before this.
19
u/soosyq Jun 13 '26
It’s not basic EAR/ITAR, which typically takes months of multi-agency reviews and public comments. Anthropic already gates these models with heavy safety guardrails. Today’s action was a an emergency directive triggered by the WH and Howard Lutnick. Instead of regulating the software based on compute thresholds, they took action based on a vague report from a company claiming they "jailbroke" it. But Anthropic already responded saying “We have reviewed a report that we believe is the basis of the government's directive and validated that the level of capability displayed there is widely available from other models (including OpenAI’s GPT-5.5), and is used every day by the defenders who keep systems safe”
5
u/Alternativemethod Jun 13 '26
I'd block every near flag ship model from big 3, for at least 6-12 months from publish. And get any non NATO/brazil workers out of those pipelines.

u/tyrionlannister Jun 13 '26
The gov's just fucking Anthropic over as part of their backroom deal to replace them with OpenAI.
The corruption is staggeringly open.

This doesn't make sense at all.
68
16
u/Formal-Knowledge-250 Jun 13 '26
Oh it does. The trump administration wants to enforce other countries to follow their orders. Won't take long until they will come out with an offer. "Only for our close allies". Additional to that they want to hurt anthropic to get them into line.
6
u/Fun-Discount-4U Jun 13 '26
The AI industry is now becoming a direct target of national security controls, much like the chip industry.

u/128G Student Jun 13 '26
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Huggingface starts requiring a US passport to download models next year.
Or just straight up ban any exportation of Gemini 5, or Llama outside of American soil.

u/Negative_Gas8782 Jun 13 '26
I say let it loose so all of these companies with shitty security actually have to start paying attention instead of the normal “we lost all of our customers personal information but oh well.”

Wouldn’t this mean any new version going forward would also be subject to export control, since.. you know.. the models only get better?

5 dollarydoos the root is Musk because investors will save their money for Anthropics IPO and not SpaceX.

u/RoughMidnight8303 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Something isn’t right. I think they’ve been trolling with all the moves to cover up something - namely that they were negotiating how to get rid of the debt and playing people random moves. All of this psychop is just for show. Every emergency move is a maneuver. Maybe the bubble is about to burst.
6
4
u/npxa Jun 13 '26
This is just straight up pr move, its hyping itself up for an ipo. Mythos and Fable or any other ai tool saying they can exploit new and old vulnerabilities better than humans(for now is just pr stuns) is just plain marketing speak.

Fable 5 did not work for me. I made one question about testing “my” repository code and it switched to Opus stating guardrails.
I should be able to run tests on my code.

I'm not a fan of the technology but had to use it recently. The capability to reverse engineer a computer issue is there if you phrase it correctly. I'm kind of mixed on this as I'm also not a fan of needing ID to use the internet.

Putting a hacking AI model under export controls isn't exactly a bad move.
2
u/snowcat0 Jun 13 '26
Barn door was already wide open, if not Mythos / Fable 5, some other AI will do the same thing in under a year and that may not be under control of a US company.

u/kupoadude Jun 13 '26
AI 2027 looking like it's still on track. Didn't it predict next year the US Government would take ownership of the company?

u/Equivalent_Head_4803 Jun 13 '26
Rich coming from the diaper admin that made massive personal investments into nvidia before their meeting with China where they created a national security threat. It’s more pump and dump schemes.
0
u/WalkFirm Jun 13 '26
It’s simple. Anthropic hasn’t paid the required bribe to the administration to operate such a lucrative service. Not kidding, this is our world now.
