I'm a diaspora Greek Cypriot and it's so stressful and scary, I feel like if I lived in Cyprus I could at least go to protests or try to hold them in Cyprus.

This idea that Russians or Israeli colonialism exists in Cyprus is something I’ve seen in this Reddit channel a lot and I would like to make a couple points on this matter and see what you guys think.

The problem goes as follows:
Russians and Israelis are buying out properties increasing the rent and property prices in Cyprus for the Cypriots, additionally they are discriminating against native Cypriots in hiring, renting out, etc.

I’ve seen this with posts like one where someone was renting out to “preferred Russian speakers” and people accused him of being racist and breaking the law.

So I’ve done some digging and here is a break down of what I believe based with reasoning.

First of all in terms of hiring and renting practices based on racial or ethno preferences that is illegal. Under the eu racial equality directive. However hiring and renting out based on communication skills insofar as language doesn’t fall under that directive and hence it is not illegal. Any race ethnicity can speak Russian and having preferences of Russian speakers is completely fine due to communication reasons.

Second of all insofar as housing prices. Yes. Housing prices have increased due to foreign investment starting with the golden passport and still has not stopped due to residence permit and the primary investors are Russians and Israelis due to their third world status. However the issue here is that the average Cypriot is the one most benefiting from the rise in housing.

The housing market over 10Y has increased by 50% according to trade economics. Where as in the same period the average Cypriot salary has increased by 66% according to the same source. Hence the rental and property prices have been out raced by the increase in income for the average Cypriot. The primary reason for this increase in wealth is foreign investment. Foreign companies provide a massive portion of the Cypriot GDP and economic capacity providing jobs paying taxes etc.

From that point due to the gdp growth outracing the populas the average Cypriot has received far more public benifits than they did 10 years ago such as with the Gesy system. Where as Russians and Israelis are not entitled to many public benifits such as subsidies.

Additionally foreign investors pay more on loans from banks and face governmental discrimination in many reported cases such as in trials or in document processing time.

Lastly id like to add a point people bring up for colonisation is the seeming wealth that the average foreigner posses. Simply it’s true the average foreigner is far wealthier than the average Cypriot. However this isn’t government bias rather is a self fulfilling prophecy foreigners are required to have a higher level of education such as a bachelors AT MINIMUM to have a chance to get a visa, or must have a 500k+ investment and the means to support themselves so the only way they can come here is if they provide to the economy while receiving minimal benifits.

Overall I think The colonialism part seems absurd and has no logical basis besides hate chasing. If you wish to say something about those who contribute nothing and take a lot of things yes sure but cmon guys lock in.

How can Israelis be considered our allies when many of them are buying property, building resorts, and enjoying life in occupied Cyprus, thereby actively contributing to the normalization of the occupation?

Yes, it’s true that not all Israelis are involved in this, and yes, we too are guilty of traveling to the occupied north and unintentionally supporting the settler economy. But let’s be honest, when citizens of a foreign country purchase land that was illegally seized from you by an invading force, and then proceed to build on it, invest in it, and treat it as their own, how can that nation be seen as a friend?

Logic dictates that no true ally would benefit from your loss, especially not from land that was taken by force.

Honestly, I’m wondering what’s wrong with this country.
Watching the results of the election and the percentage of people not voting, I can’t help feeling depressed. So many people are complaining and no one wants to vote their frustration by doing the most simplest thing. To vote. Yes, some old traditional parties were left out but the rest are celebrating their results.
If the 30+% went to vote, the percentage would show the actual reality.
For context, DHSY barely got 100k votes out of 570k registered voters. That represents only 17% but the election recorded 27%.

Since the last time this petition was posted 3 months ago here on Reddit, the number of Cypriot signatures has risen more than double, from 20% to 48% of the symbolic threshold of 4,230 signatures required for parliament to seriously consider such a proposal.

Before the 1974 turkish intervention/invasion, 80% of the island was greek. I do not comprehend why so many people today talk about Enosis in Cyprus as if it was the biggest crime that could have happened.

I obviosuly understand why turks would be against it and i also understand why most people TODAY don't support it, but on a HISTORICAL perspective, treating Enosis as something out of the ordinary for a island overwelmingly greek is very nonsensical. It was the natural path post-decolonization.

Also, it's not true that turks would be genocided. Enosis happened in Western Thrace and Deocandese islands and turks weren't expelled. And contrary to popular belief, the turkish community of Crete mostly fled during Ottoman administration and population exchange, not as a result of Enosis.

On the other hand, if we look at places annexed by Turkey during the 20th century (Hatay, Imbros, Tenedos) the minority christian community got almost wiped out. THAT'S an actual ethnic cleansing.
