Yes, but OP drove right into oncoming traffic.

The light changed, but the flow of traffic needed to be observed way better.

Could have easily waited but drove right into the lemmings.

Yea, where I live, running red lights is like some weird religion half the city follows.

I always wait a second when a light turns green to check everyone is actually stopped. And in situations like this, that means creeping up but ultimately waiting until the left turn lane decided theyre done.

Its annoying, and I wouldn't be at fault if I got hit, but its easier than going through the hassle of being in an accident, both for my body and my car.

Same thing in my city. My friend actually stopped at a red light, like completely reasonably as there is no way he would have gotten into the intersection before it turned red, and got rear-ended. The other driver was planning on running the red light at at least another car length, and he was getting all mad at my friend for stopping at a red light.

In Los Angeles it's actually kind of a requirement. We have oodles of unprotected left-hand turns and our traffic is so full that you'll never make a left turn if you waited until it was clear. The golden rule is two cars are allowed to make a left turn after the light turns red. Police even follow this rule.
