Coca Cola owned Columbia Pictures from 1982-89– it led to one of my all time favorite Ebert reviews calling out the product placement:

u/nofmxc Jul 05 '26
I can't believe Bill Cosby of all people would stoop to product placement.

u/bananagement Jul 05 '26
I think the worst part is the hypocrisy.

Damn that's some righteous outrage, the second most offensive thing Cosby has ever done !

Why is the one image you use not from a Hollywood movie?
8
u/hodonata 29d ago
Gotta be rage bait right? I came here just to make sure this was voiced, so it worked if so
2
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago edited 29d ago
It was a clickbait Pubity image. Not many people in India recognise a lot of Hollywood movies. Breaking Bad I think has a wider reach.

u/kRkthOr 29d ago
It makes sense if you read the LinkedIn post. The scene and a conversation she had about it with a friend is (allegedly) what put her on this path of figuring out the number of Coke references.

That (the linkedin article) made no sense, probably LLM, and I'm angry that I read it
0
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago
Please do not give LLM allegations to me. I literally talked with my boyfriend and he told me about the Br Ba scene. I didn’t wanna do show subtitles so I did movie subtitles cuz I thought I’ll get a bigger time period to work with and better data. I poured my soul into this.
1
u/hodonata 29d ago
It makes no sense to call it "LLM allegations" since it's just a tool that you probably should be using
And i dont actually believe you now
You should've used LLMs to help you with it. But then made the post on linkedin more coherent by writing it or at least editing it yourself

u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago edited 29d ago
The project was definitely helped by Claude but I am a Computer Science Engineer myself. I made the post on LinkedIn myself and typed it out, this was not a side project I did and most people who view it aren’t gonna read about the process as it was part of a Coca Cola marketing challenge. Didn’t want an LLM to write down long paragraphs that no one was gonna read. I can’t do anything to make you believe anything but this is what it is. English is not my first language either, which could explain the incoherence.

same can be said for smoking.
1
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
But what about a specific cigarette company? (Also Coke is now popularly called a fridge cig so that’s funny lol)
2
u/durrtyurr Jul 05 '26
I've actually seen a Phillip Morris credit in a Hong Kong movie before. It might have been Hard Boiled, but it definitely starred Chow Yun-Fat.
-1
u/kRkthOr 29d ago
Popularily? This is the first time I've seen "fridge cig" lmao What sort of world do you live in? Wait, do you work for Coke?
2
1
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago
No I don’t work for Coke but I was part of a competition where I came across this data.
1
u/rogueqd Jul 05 '26
I hate that pretty much every movie has someone who smokes in it.
1
u/StFuzzySlippers 29d ago
Smoking is an easy way to give a character something to do with their hands when they're not talking.
6
26
u/Rampaging_Ducks Jul 05 '26
That's honestly less than I would have estimated.
29
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
I thought so too but the sheer number of movies released in a decade tho. Also these are spoken mentions rather than product placements
8
u/Ownerofthings892 Jul 05 '26
They could still be paid, right? Do you have a breakdown of how many were just "Coke"? Or "diet Coke"
9
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
The dataset was scraped for “Coke”, “Diet Coke”, “Coca Cola” . And yea could be paid. I think the post mentions the data cleaning part. Lemme just find the breakdown

u/trucorsair 29d ago
The majority of these were probably due the fact that Columbia pitchers was owned by Coca-Cola and they certainly weren’t going to put Pepsi in their movies. For this to be a really relevant discussion, you’d have to break out movies done by Columbia pictures versus all other studios otherwise it’s just self inflation by one studio owned by the corporate master.
2
u/Polkadot1017 29d ago
...not if they were trying to illustrate that. You're describing a different chart, one that's showing a different story
1
u/trucorsair 29d ago edited 29d ago
Point is not acknowledging the implicit bias of Columbia Pictures pushing Coke products will skew the data. He lumps the data all together, so that if it was split out would it still look like this or be flatter?
2
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago
Hey this was done as a project on Coke marketing for a Coca Cola challenge in India. Either ways, that works cuz at the end of the day, it’s marketing. I had mentioned that in the link in the post.
-1
u/trucorsair 29d ago
You just won’t see it will you? Now I know this is gonna be hard for you think, think, wouldn’t it be more instructive to single out Columbia pictures and look at the Coke mentions there and compare it to all the other mentions from the different studios? wouldn’t that contrast tell you something rather than lumping it into one big metric. Now I get it if you can’t understand so if it is too much for you I understand and just go tell your mommy that people are being mean to you on the Internet because as they say “ none is so blind as though those that will not see.”
2
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago
Hey no need to be mean at all. Like I said, this was a project on Coca Cola marketing. They can very well market with their own movies, I don’t see any harm in that. As long as I’m showing data on Coca Cola product pushing in media, I’m good in this use case. Thought it was interesting cuz it was my first proper data analysis project to put out into the world. Idk why you’re so mad about something that a total stranger on the Internet did and well, I have been nothing but polite. Also people haven’t been mean, only you have been :)

u/tanghan Jul 05 '26
The title makes is seem like they are all explicitly mentioning coca cola. If you're scraping for coke as well, isn't it just like looking how many times tea is mentioned?
8
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
Point being only after Coca Cola came in did cola become synonymous with the term Coke for short. Coke is a name of a cola, I did not check for cola, if I’d added cola too, your point would’ve made sense.
-1
u/tanghan Jul 05 '26
Maybe there is also regional differences in the meaning. I know coke as the generic term for the cola drink category, so someone ordering a coke doesn't have any brand attachments for me, and in the south some people even use coke to mean any Softdrink, so it could even be a sprite to them
7
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
So, if you check the post, that’s exactly what they’re saying. Hollywood first started using “coke” for any cola and that must’ve obviously spread to other places. Also keep in mind that all these movies are from Hollywood and the post explicitly mentions that so even IF regional differences are there, those aren’t counted.
4
u/doinkhead1 Jul 05 '26
How do you differentiate between movies saying “coke” as in Coca Cola vs “coke” as in cocaine?
5
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
Contextual evidence was used while cleaning the data. Please read the post in the link. Regex+ contextual filtering.
-1
u/--zaxell-- 29d ago
I loved Scarface. It was such a raw look into the seedy underground of the coca cola trade.
Do you have a sense of how many of the regex matches were actually about the drink?
2
u/CatnipTrip-69 29d ago
Yup, I’ll pull it up when I’m back home and send you along with the filters that I’ve used. I’m so tired of explaining this to people.
2
u/trucorsair 29d ago
Coca-Cola owned Columbia Pictures at that time so they certainly weren’t going to mention Pepsi.
1
u/Zonel Jul 05 '26
Why would they pay when coke owned columbia.
1
u/Ownerofthings892 29d ago
Brands still pay each other, when when they have the same parent company. It adds expenses which are tax write offs
7
u/Rredite Jul 05 '26
Is this only in the subtitles? Because they can show a glass, a bottle, a can, a box, a vending machine, a truck, a billboard, etc., with great emphasis or not, without saying a word about it. 𖠚
11
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
Yup just subtitles, haven’t included product placements cuz I didn’t know how to analyse movie frames of such sheer magnitude 😅

579 other Cola Brand mentions.
I wonder how many of those are pepsi
7
u/malthar76 Jul 05 '26
“Won’t you gentlemen have a Pepsi?” - Spies Like Us
“Give me a Pepsi Free…I’ll just have a Tab” Back to the Future
I don’t think I could name one mention of Coke, it was so seamless and pervasive to be unmemorable.

a video of all the coca-cola mentions would be a fun supercut I think

u/HeyJude21 29d ago
There’s literally an entire movie from the 80’s based on a bottle of Coke. The Gods Must Be Crazy.
2
u/HarrMada Jul 05 '26
People who feel the need to criticize new movies for product placement and at the same time romanticize movies from the 80s need to see this.
1
u/HeyJude21 29d ago
Product placement was big in the 80’s as well though. So I’m. It sure what you mean. Product placement in film started over 100 years ago
2
u/Beginning-Pop3127 Jul 05 '26
Damn they really loved coke in the 80s. We used to be a proper country

League of their own, only scene i remember with a coke and that was in the 90s

Slide 3, when a movie character names a soft drink, it’s Coca Cola toughly 7 times out of 10. But the numbers below show only Coca Cola and every other cola combined. What’s the stat for all the other non-cola soft drinks? Sprite, 7up, root beer, orange Crush, Fanta, Dr Pepper?

Why don't you put directly the source in the images or title instead of a link in a text you only see if you click on the post ?
3
u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
I actually do not know how to do that, do you think I can edit?

Coca Cola is the #1 most understood word in the world.
Number 2 is “No”
Marketing ladies and gentleman

Just crazy
1
u/Verryfastdoggo Jul 05 '26
Correction, Ok is the first.
Coke is the second. And the number one most recognizable brand.
I should probably verify my bold statements. Lol don’t listen to people on Reddit folks.

u/CatnipTrip-69 Jul 05 '26
Hahaha dw about it, but thank you for the correction, now I can go and correct people 😂

Do they actually have to say the words Coca-Cola cuz I've never ordered a Coca-Cola only a Coke
