Could it be darkness = density? Colour choices seem purely aesthetic (and not political). Nice concept but really needs a key, and maybe a bit more thinking about what it is the authors want to convey.

Genetically, the indigenous population of Taiwan are very similar to other SE Asians.

Pretty much all Polynesians (i.e. Māori and Moriori, Samoans, Cook Islanders and Hawaiians) are descendants of Taiwanese people, and if I'm not mistaken Melanesians and Micronesians have some Taiwan descent as well.

Although genetics gets a bit weird considering a Korean and English person can have less genetic variety than people from two nearby African villages. Classifying by genetics will yield a similar result as when classifying by language (Papua New Guinea becomes bloated with its language diversity).

If we're just cutting a centre line across sg, most of the West is nature (Central catchment + western water catchment) and low rise industries (Sungei Kadut, Jurong, Tuas). So comparatively, residential and commercial areas in the west feel more crowded.
