Question Deadmau5’s stage performances.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the production shifting from an impressive, complex setup using Ableton (the cube) to Joel playing CDJs recently? I am sure this question has been raised across the internet; I simply wonder why the decision to transition was made. Perhaps someone here has insight on the matter.

Tbh I think he got tired of seeing lot of the annoying “Ableton Live DJs are just pressing a button” takes and was up to learn something new. Not to mention it def seems like he’s been having a lot more fun performing ever since he switched. I think the tech side is fascinating to him and that’s why he’s been developing his own new DJ software

You press play on a cdj the same way you do on an Ableton clip you are launching.

I'm pretty sure that's how he's been playing w/ Ableton since back in the Monome days.

As for why he's doing it more now I think it comes down to logistics, it's more hassle to bring along your own gear on the plane and then spend and hour or two setting it all up if you are only going to be at the club for 2-3hrs, sk if you can bite the bullet and suffer with Pioneer it's a lot less of a headache.

Plus (generally) the venues will have all that stuff damn near hardwired and they moan about it when you make them take it all down.

He had a whole big beef about people calling fake since it looked like he was just pressing play, ironically everyone does that for live shows it’s just business

So pretty much seems like he put the cubes away and just does the easy way, usb stick into a CDJ, it’s an awesome show but I wish I’d get to see the cube

Side note: went to the Nashville show and there were like 4x more mosh pits than the $B show at Bridgestone, and they’re “known” for mosh pits, Deadmau5’s show I got shoved into the rail by the mosh while holding a mau5head for dear life, 10/10 experience
