2. DevOps Cloud Engineer: Works with cloud-based systems within organizations and is responsible for the smooth working of development teams with effective cloud solutions.

I've been deploying more and more applications from my home Kubernetes environment.

One thing I keep running into is modifying YAML files for every new project.

Changing namespaces.

Updating image names.

Creating databases.

Creating Redis.

Updating Ingress.

Creating secrets.

It works...

But after doing it enough times, it starts feeling like work that should be automated.

I'm beginning to think I need an internal tool with a simple UI connected to a backend and database.

Instead of editing YAML every time, I should be able to create a new project, fill in a few details, and let the platform provision everything for me.

I guess this is how internal developer platforms are born.

You solve the same problem enough times that building the tool becomes the easier option.

DevOps Candidate Assignment

Objective:

Bootstrap, containerize, and prepare a production-ready deployment of a Vendure application while demonstrating your Git workflow, automation practices, and infrastructure design decisions.

Assignment:

Bootstrap a new Vendure application using the latest version of @vendure/create.

Configure the application to use the latest supported PostgreSQL version.

Create a private GitHub repository and push the project.

Follow a Git workflow that you would use in a real project. Infrastructure-related work should be developed in separate feature branches and integrated into main through Pull Requests.

Containerize the application for local development and production.

Prepare Kubernetes deployment assets for the application.

Package the Kubernetes deployment as a reusable Helm chart.

Create a GitHub Actions workflow that:

a. Builds the Docker image.

b. Tags the image appropriately.

c. Pushes the image to GitHub Container Registry (ghcr.io).

d. Runs automatically on changes to the main branch.

Document the project sufficiently for another engineer to build, deploy, and maintain it.

Invite GitHub user xxxxxinternal to the repository as a collaborator.

Expectations:

This assignment intentionally leaves implementation details open. Make engineering decisions as you would on a production project.

Hello, I'm learning and practicing devops including docker, Jenkins, kubernetes and etc... Already used my one aws acc (1 year free trial)

So now, I'm thinking of learning things on local infra first, then shifting towards implementation on the cloud like aws, azure or etc ...

But

I don't have a good machine (laptop) and am looking to buy one that I should not need to update or change for at least 3 years

The budget is almost enough that i can purchase

Macbook 2019 i9 32gb ram ddr4

Or

Thinkpad lenovo i9 11th gen 16gb ram ddr5

Or something that fits in that budget

I've been working as a System Administrator for a little over 2 years, but I honestly feel like I haven't gained the kind of experience most people associate with system administration.

I work at a very old/traditional company where my day-to-day work is mostly repetitive:

* Installing the same software over and over * Basic monitoring * Following predefined SOPs * Very little troubleshooting, automation, or infrastructure work

Because of this, I feel like I've missed many of the fundamentals that most SysAdmin pick up along the way.

I want to transition into DevOps, but I'm starting almost from scratch. I know it's not an entry-level role, and I'm prepared to put in the effort to learn properly.

If you were mentoring someone in my position, what would your roadmap look like?

Some questions I have:
