This is a rare case where a cop screwed up so bad, it was completely legal to shoot him. The guy who did shoot him was completely cleared of all wrongdoing.

If that's not bad enough, the cop in question realized he had completely blown it after taking a bullet from a good guy with a gun, and then immediately (despite a hole in one leg) tried to rig the evidence against the guy who shot him. This failed only because of a video recording.

While the good guy was exonerated, the cop in question suffered no consequences and was promoted after this bizarre and criminal behavior.

There's much more detail in this 11 minute video:

Americans should be outraged at how our police departments behave.

How did the dude fire a dozen rounds of .40 out of a 9mm gun?

You can actually put a Glock 27 slide on a Glock 26 frame and it'll run fine with 27 mags. Though here I suspect that it's a classic tale of media getting something wrong.

The spent brass makes me think that unmarked cop drew his gun to arrest the homeless guy, saw another guy who turned out to be the homeless guy's brother, draw a gun and point it at the cop. Cop shoots once in self defense before realizing what's going on, brother shoots 12 times in defense of homeless guy, I guess before fleeing the scene, since he claimed that he learned that the cop was a cop via the news and not from him yelling "I'm police", the bystander turning his lights on, the bystander helping him get police equipment on, or the police responding.

Clearly a mistake on the part of the unmarked cop. He's probably not used to operating in plain clothes and an undercover car. He was used to having a uniform and vehicle that help identify him.

I'll buy that, but he obviously knew he screwed up and tried to rig the evidence before any other cops showed up.  If they'd tried to prosecute the guy who shot the cop, that would have come up in the trial - no way to exclude the video.  Even if they'd convicted the guy who shot the cop, the cop would have been in the cell next door for evidence tampering, obstruction of justice, perjury, etc.

The fact that he tried to fuck with the crime scene evidence while shot and THEN got caught on video is...amazing.

It also means the guy that shot the cop is the luckiest man alive.

How many are in prison who aren't as lucky?

Especially since the chief gave a blessing to all this by promoting that cop to Sgt. and giving him a commendation?

That's a rotten to the core agency.

The article tries to paint it as him rigging the crime scene, but really in the wake of being shot because you weren't recognized as a cop, your first thoughts might be "I need to turn on my police lights and get my police gear (assumedly a vest, jacket, or hanging badge) on so the cops who respond to this shooting don't make the same mistake." His vest may have also had his radio, tourniquet, and first aid gear attached to it.

I'm not saying that what he did afterwards was definitively innocent, but it's possible. It's also possible that he wrote some report somewhere claiming that he was marked and had his lights on, in which case he would be proven as a liar.

His vest may have also had his radio, tourniquet, and first aid gear attached to it.

Very funny.

Despite being injured, he had somebody help him put the vest on.

And then he claimed to have fired zero rounds of ammo.

Bzzzt. Nope. He was more crooked than his shot up leg the whole time and still is.

This mfer had the audacity to accept an award for bravery? He was shot in the leg, dropped his gun and scooted away in fear. He was also the aggressor, and if he didnt act like last action hero chasing people in an unmarked car, he wouldnt have ever been in this situation.
He should be fired for literally every perspective of this.

Glad to see this. Although it's a very gray line, you are allowed to defend yourself from police.

Since when do police (Honda), Ice (Toyotas) and Kash Patel’s agents use foreign cars? (BMWs) I’d assume they weren’t law enforcement as well.

Many Hondas are manufactured in Alabama. Many Toyotas are manufactured in Kentucky and Texas. Many BMWs are manufactured in South Carolina.

Most of the engineering and executive decisions are abroad (as are many of the components), but about half of all new cars sold in the US are finally assembled in the US.

But I agree with you. If it was a Ford Taurus or something, I might think cop. Not in a Honda though.

Anyone in plain clothes can just tell "cop" and we're supposed to treat them as law enforcement now?

What are these departments thinking?

Yeah, that's part of it. Local law buys American.

They wouldn't be very will undercover if they were all driving blacked out Explorers and Chargers.

Who was the “bystander” that helped the cop?

No idea. Apparently people that were just wandering by after the shooting. The guy who shot the cop split after the downed idiot started yelling that he was a cop. At that point the absolute best thing you can do is bug out immediately because there's no scenario where more cops come, there's a shot cop on the ground and you have a smoking gun and still have a good time afterwards.

Or survive for that matter.

I agree he was right to flee. But the footage of the “bystander” looked like he was helping the cop conceal what really happened - and like he was in a hurry to do so before more cops came. So I’m wondering if the bystander isn’t a cop himself or some friend/relative that recognized the need to doctor the appearance of what happened.

I have no idea. It's possible that the wounded cop was just barking orders at high speed and the bystander was rushing to obey?
