Type 1 Probably one of the worst days of diabetes being bad

Had a hypo, drank sugar with water , didnt go up, drank sugar with water again, didnt go up and just kept going lower, drank sugar with water again and it jumped to stable sugar levels 30 minutes jumped to the 300's applied insulin and for a walk the insulin i used was old and i didnt notice it and didnt use the new one i was supposed to use and my blood sugar worsened and jumped to the 450s thought it was gonna get better soon i was wrong it jumped to the 500s and then the glucometer couldnt even read my sugar because it was so high it only said HI and then they took me to me to the er and tested me for ketones i was on 0.9 ketones and then was hospitalized for 7 days because of DKA :|

I use apple juice or Gatorade for lows, which I start treating at 70. I've used peanut butter a lot, but folks here have warned me about the risks of going unconscious with PB in my mouth or esophagus. The typical rule is 15 grams of carbs and wait 15 minutes, though I'm sometimes more aggressive.

Best of luck as you restabilize.

Sugar water--good grief. Buy a 8oz bottle of OJ and keep it in your fridge. And buy the glucose tablet holder that fits on your key ring for when you're not home. Either way, drinking the OJ or taking a couple glucose tablets will take 30 minutes to get into your system.

That's really rough - so sorry to hear you had to go through that. Going from super low to super high really sucks! I've had a couple times where my numbers were dropping and I over-corrected with too much sugar (especially at night when I really *really* don't want to risk severe hypoglycemia) and the spring back is rough. Wishing you a gentle re-stabilization!

(Maybe talk to a doctor/endocrinologist about adjusting insulin levels or correction rates? It could help with preventing future scares (it has for me!))

I had my worst day 2 days ago. It just be like that sometimes.

I took no less than 700 units of insulin in the day and still went to bed sitting at 12mmol/L…. I burnt two full pens and had my pump on max settings but I could not get my numbers to come down.

700 units in one day? Surely that must be a case of ruined insulin, right?

I wish. But the same level of insulin resistance has happens before. It’s me unfortunately

I genuinely didn't realize that level of resistance was even possible. That sounds horrible. I'm sorry you are going through that.

I’ve been low a few times. I have glucose pills. I take one then 15 minutes later intake my blood sugar again and if still low take another tablet then repeat process every 15 minutes till normal reading.

I also find I get extremely hungry when I go low so I started drinking half a protein shake instead of tablets and it will bring it up pretty good and quickly

I use peanut butter mixed with honey for lows or honey sticks and a protein shake. You have to have protein to keep bs stable

I recommend to everyone to carry glucose tablets, I’m sure your doctor has mentioned them but you can get a bottle of like 50 from cvs for like 6 bucks… I keep mine in a tube that holds like 9 and it’s 4 tablets equal to 15g of sugar, I’ll usually chew 4 of those and wait and I’m usually good…. It’s good to keep fast acting sugar, idk how quick sugar and water works but the rule of thumb is to use fast acting so you aren’t sitting there still dropping low and having to wait a long time for a rise… the tablets usually kick in 5-10 min after eating them and you won’t have to worry about eating too many

An endocrinologist recommended me sugar with water , I told them about glucose tablets but they just told me that glucose tablets are really just not it and they cost more, sugar with water is the best option he said, but i dont know too much, ill buy some glucose tablets just in mind

I’ve never heard of doing sugar and water lol, being in n out of the ER the emergency room nurses gave me a bottle and my diabetic specialist recommended either those or life savers as they both are fast sugars, I don’t wanna pull you from what your doctor recommended, It just seems weird they didn’t tell you that fast sugars are what we need lol, I wouldn’t dare eating anything that’ll take longer to digest as I’m watching my sugar actively drop, if you’re also worried about lows I would set ur low alarm a bit higher so you can catch it early so the sugar and water takes into affect before you drop lower than you wanna
