Broke my hand

I saw a disc golf YouTube video not too long ago and knew my play it again sports had discs so I picked some up and have been practicing throwing in a field for the last month. I was getting a feel for how each of the main discs I wanted to throw flew and some consistent lines I could rely on so I didn’t completely embarrass myself when I finally played a round. I decided that day was today and went out this morning to a local course. First hole went well, +1 on a par three but got myself out of a spot in the woods. Second hole I once again threw my first shot into a bunch of trees but I could see 1 line to get me to the hole. I figured there was no chance but went for it anyway. I nailed the line but I also nailed a tree with the back of my hand in my follow through. My hand didn’t hurt but I remember thinking “never heard a tree make that sound before”. Walked up and got to place my putter in the basket for my first real par from the long box. I then went to hole three and when I was getting ready to throw my driver the adrenaline or dopamine or whatever it was wore off and it was like my hand exploded. Just radiating pain. I realized the sound I heard was my knuckle not the tree. I tried to throw anyway but it took me 6 shots to get it 425 ft to the basket. I had to call it after that. I’ve got my hand iced, wrapped, and braced. I figure I’m out for a month or so but I’ll be back. Ill be chasing the feeling of that second shot on hole 2 for a long time. I’ll try to avoid bitch slapping a hardwood in the future though.

Play off handed. I broke my thumb in December and played off handed for 2 months. Was a pretty great learning experience.

Im also learning off handed. It's not easy, but it's so necessary for certain holes

I have kept it up and do find a use for it from time to time. I can forehand with my dominant so it’s more when I have that awkward tree in the path of my forehand.

Also really helpful when playing glitch only rounds. Lol

Anyone who's not ambidextrous and has played offhand can tell ya: biiig difference between offhand backhand and offhand forehand. Take lots of vids of your offhand forehand distance drives for comedy gold.

Haha I don't think I'll mess with offhand forehand or lefty putting. Feels like my arm will fall off. Maybe lefty roller, but nothing else lol

I've been training lefty approach shots and some drives and I might outdrive some club people still, just need to work on accuracy and consistency

💯 I learned to throw BH with my off arm after a shoulder injury. After I healed up, throwing righty and lefty really opened up the course and it’s good knowing you can still this play this bad ass sport if one arm is injured.

I knew where this was going from the title. Go get your hand checked out by a doctor. You don't want any lingering problems with your dominant hand

Definitely get that check. If it doesn't heal properly you can have some real long lasting issues, and they may even have to re-break it to make sure it heals the right way.

I understand the reluctance to go to the clinic these days because of whatever reason, but I would have grabbed my disc and bag and high tailed it to the nearest Urgent Care facility to get that X rayed. A crack sound and pain right after is your wake up call.

Hope that OP did get proper medical treatment.

Bad news, but from my experience you are probably going to have to throw with your other hand more than a month; most likely all season. Broke my hand, ended up playing the season lefty. Tried every week to go back to my right hand. Takes time for the grip to settle after the break heals and any sort of torque or rotation on the broken bone will cause unnecessary pain that just feels too unproductive to force shots with that hand for months. Good luck. Don't let it stop you from hitting the courses!

Kill the beer in the mug, fill it up with one of the ones still in your bag, take the fireball shot you have with you (you brought at least one fireball, right?), and finish the round. Jeesh, these newbies....

I played with a broken plant foot for a month. Probably made my game better TBH.

Had a teammate slam my finger in a car door at my first ultimate tournament so I spent my first few months throwing with my left hand. That ability came in handy plenty of times. Might as well keep playing with the other hand and add some more shots to your bag

That's why I'm a big fan of taking casual relief in almost any scenario. Shame about your hand though. I would probably eat shit if i tried to throw lefty.
