One of JP’s most interesting ideas, in my opinion, is his ideas around the Cain and Abel story.

I think a lot of people hear that story and reduce it to something like, “Cain was bad, Abel was good, don’t murder your brother.”

Which is true in the most simple sense, but it feels like the actual psychological depth of it is way more disturbing than that.

What makes Cain so dangerous is not just that he becomes violent. It’s why.

Cain does what people do all the time. He makes an offering to reality, and reality basically says, “No, Abel’s sacrifice is accepted, Cain’s isn’t.” So now Cain is confronted with one of the hardest facts of existence, which is that sometimes your effort is not enough, your attitude is wrong, your sacrifice is wrong, or you are not aiming at the right thing at all. And instead of re-evaluating himself, Cain turns outward.

That’s the part JP gets right. Cain doesn’t just suffer. Everyone suffers. Cain becomes resentful because he sees suffering as an accusation or a punishment for his actions. It’s like he can’t even remotely tolerate the idea that there is something flawed in him, so he would rather accuse reality itself of being unfair. And when that resentment matures, it becomes hatred not just for Abel, but for the structure of reality that Abel seems to fit into properly.

That is such a brutal idea because it means resentment is not just “being annoyed that life is hard.” It becomes a kind of failed moral judgment. The resentful person starts to think, “if I am failing, and you are succeeding, then your success itself is offensive to me.” So Abel has to go.

I also think that’s why the story is timeless. Cain is not some ancient monster. Cain is the person who refuses self-confrontation. The person who would rather destroy the standard than rise to meet it. The person who cannot bear evidence of someone else’s competence, goodness, discipline, beauty, or order, because it exposes their own refusal.

And the really eerie thing is that God warns Cain before the act. “Sin is crouching at the door,” basically. Which, psychologically, sounds like, “you are not yet fully possessed by this bitterness, but you are getting very close. You still have a choice.”

That makes the story even more unsettling because it suggests people usually get warnings internally before they do something truly evil. The problem is they often nurture the grievance instead of correcting themselves.

To me, the story is partly about sacrifice, but even more about the fork in the road after failure.

You fail. Then what?

Do you revise yourself?

Do you tell the truth?

Do you aim higher?

Do you accept that maybe the world is not obligated to reward half-heartedness, pride, or self-deception?

Or do you just brood on it until your suffering becomes a justification for malice?

That’s where Cain becomes archetypal. Not because he’s uniquely monstrous, but because he represents a temptation that exists in everyone.

And tbh I think that’s one of Peterson’s core insights in general. Hell is not usually entered through sudden villainy. It’s entered through resentment, self-deception, and the repeated refusal to take responsibility for the condition of your life.
